We brought our two oldest daughters, ages 5 & 7. There were several younger children in the audience. While about half of the songs were the ones we know and love from Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast, there were some that were new to us. The lively numbers were obvious crowd favorites.
Much of the performance is darker (in actual lighting) and seemingly slower than our media-savy kids may be accustomed to....my 5 year old was scared by a few of the scenes and fidgety before intermission.
One thing that bothered me was the physical violence toward Belle. Gaston raised his hand to strike her (he did not strike her, though). My 7 year old noticed this, too. The next morning she said, "The Beast and Gaston have something in common...the way they grabbed Belle." So, I know the "real" Beauty and the Beast story is much darker than the Disney version. However, it still bothered me. Had my girls not been there, it probably would not have stuck with me.
