Great time -- only George Clinton Disappointed
by RoadTripFromMich on 5/7/15Tom Lee Park - MemphisRating: 4 out of 5We chose Memphis as our mini-vacation destination to check the box on attending the BSMF. We really enjoyed ourselves - ate/drank well, met very nice and interesting people, paid our respects to Elvis and the other music legends (alive or not), and of course listened to awesome music at the festival. The acts that drew us to the festival all put an awesome show - especially Lenny K, Pixies, Spin Doctors, Slash, Kenny W.S., Band of Horses, Ed Sheeran, John Fogerty! - JF was SO good. Surprise bands we really enjoyed and are now on the must-see-again list are Cage The Elephant, Big Head Todd & TM, Lecrea, and Flogging Molly. Hozier also very talented and put on a good show -- needs to mature his stage presence. Wilco predictably good with awesome musicianship but kinda boring. Scott Weiland was solid but walked off at the end without even a thank you - really Scott?
The only disappointment was George Clinton & P-Funk. We had such high expectations and were so ready. Those guys have lost their funk and gone thug. Clearly playing for themselves and killing time. The audience so wanted to get into it but they didn't groove. Talented bands don't have to beg the audience to make noise, drop F-bombs and make other lude remarks, or hump the microphone stand for a rise. With 10+ people on stage, including a horn section, they could have put themselves back on the map. A dang shame.
On a blues note, we caught Preston Shannon (twice) and he is terrific. We also happened to catch WILL TUCKER in the blues tent and "WOW!". He is the real deal and, at his young age, is going to be absolutely huge. Hope he makes it to Michigan soon.
Thanks Memphis for a great extended weekend!
