    Love and family

by BigEzy on 3/26/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The play presented outstanding voices to an interested audience. CeeCee was a wonder at all ages and Bertie complemented CeeCee's larger than life personality. Act one seemed softer than did Act two as the chemistry of the adult CeeCee and Bertie came to the ford by the time Bertie's mother passed and the strength of character and caring shone through. Had I directed, I would have had .CeeCee enter the hospital and call to Bertie in a soft voice, embrace her friend and while looking over Bertie's shoulder have CeeCee say the line, "It's okay Doc, I'm her sister! I've got this, right Honey (to Bertie)?" My only uncertain point for line delivery of the okay. Also was not convinced by the line telling the husband to buy himself something because buying himself something always made him feel better! Still, I loved the show and a tear fell only at the hospital scene of Bertie saying she was alone!!!

Great play. Theatre is small so there isn't really a bad seat in the house, but we sat on the right side of the theatre and my neck got a little sore from having to look far left for a lot of the show. Actors of all ages portraying the main characters were fantastic singing and acting!

    Simply Astounding!

    by JDee1M on 3/25/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

What an astounding musical. They captured the essence of the movie/book quite well on stage! I really enjoyed this. The grown CeeCee did a magnificent job! Everyone was really great, but CeeCee was exceptional because that Bette Midler character is a tough act to follow, but the actor nailed it!

    As good as it gets!

by Anonymous on 3/18/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The cast of Beaches was great- as good as any I've seen on Broadway - fantastic singing and acting. The three pairs of actresses playing the leading characters as children, teens and adults were superb.

    Lots of talent and profanity

by Lindance on 3/17/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

I enjoyed everything but the excessive and unnecessary use of profanity. Great sets and costumes, well-written music, good acting, superb lighting. I'm just glad there were no children in the audience.

Loved the movie and I love this play.

    by Denise46 on 3/11/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The fresh and melodic music combined with the clever staging of a friendship created a memorable theater experience. Two characters at three different ages, played by six actresses establish continuity and context for a relationship. I was pleased that there was a nod to "The Wind Beneath My Wings" but I would have enjoyed this musical even without it. Talented acting across the board was the glue that made this a solid play.

    Beaches at Signature

by Recenttransplant on 3/11/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

A number of us women, representing various generations, saw Beaches in celebration of International Women's Day at Signature Theater. What a treat! It was a great. Voices strong, staging lovely, production creative. Lovely way to celebrate friendships among women. I found the use of different actors playing different points in the lifetime of this friendship particularly effective!

    Beaches was excellent

by NatSchubert on 3/11/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Congratulations to Signature for producing this world premier. The show is about friendship among women, and I took 4 of my favorite women friends to the performance. We enjoyed it very much. Beaches is a wonderful adaptation of the novel by Iris Rainer Dart. All of the actresses who played Cee Cee and Bertie at various ages brought the ups and downs of their long friendship alive, and it was good to see the child and teenage Cee Cee and Bertie in reprises throughout the show. Alysha Umphress and Mara Davi as the adult Cee Cee and Bertie gave powerful performances.

Another great night at Signature Theatre

    by VAMom14 on 3/9/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The production of Beaches was very well done. The actress playing the role of CeeCee has a knock out voice, and gave a great rendition of the classic Wind Beneath my Wings and the other songs. The rest of the company was also very good.

    Beaches

Very entertaining! Excellent singing and acting. Drama, comedy and sadness are all in one show. Hard to take grandchildren to it, though, because some of the language is a bit rough.

A Dull Day at the Beach

    by Stagemom2014 on 3/3/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This is an ambitious new musical whose appeal hinges on whether you can root for the lead characters, CeeCee and Bertie. The story, based on the book by Iris Rainer Dart, is slim to begin with -- remember, it was Bette Midler's tour de force performance that made this tearjerker of a book into a wildly successful film. The production feels like a work in progress, and probably is. The musical numbers alternated between power pop and formulaic musical theater. The most successful were the duet "The Letters" sung by the teen and then the adult CeeCee and Bertie. Several of the ensemble numbers were fun and compelling, including "Let's be normal" (title approximate.). The men's songs felt unfinished. Good performance by the young cast, especially Svea Johnson and the always delightfulMaya Brettell. Less impressive were the broadway imports, Brooklyn Shuck and Presley Ryan -- they seemed more manufactured, less genuine than the heartfelt Nina played by Svea. Maybe Nina is just a more three-dimensional role. Gracie Jones was in great voice for teen CeeCee but just looked too old. (Will Signature please stop doing this? They also cast a very old-looking Dainty June in their recent production of Gypsy!) Mari Davi and Alysha Umphress were extremely strong as Bertie and CeeCee.

Talented cast. Disappointed the songs weren't the same as the movie but still an entertaining show. Alysha Umphress as CeeCee was fantastic

    Beaches

by ProductofheEighties on 2/26/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The stage adaptation of Beaches was amazing. The cast made you forget you were watching a stage show and really made the characters come to life. You know the show has a sad ending, but the life of the characters are enhanced by the performance, which pulls even more at your emotions of the tragedy.

    Beaches- so fun

    by 1111Spartan on 2/25/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

My 14 year old daughter and I loved it. We went for a girls night out, all the seats at Signature are good and the talent is amazing. The lead actresses were all so talented, each sounding different yet resembling the same character. What a great adaptation of the movie. Highly recommend to young and old.
