About

B.B. King is in his late 80s, but the King of Blues is still on stage with his band and his famous guitar Lucille more than 100 nights a year -- a tour schedule that would tax many artists a quarter of his age. He's without a doubt the most well-known and successful living blues artist in the world. A Mississippi native, Riley B. King first built his reputation while working as a DJ, guitarist and jingle writer at the legendary radio station WDIA in Memphis, where he was known as "Blues Boy King" -- a nickname that was later shortened to B.B. He recorded his first album in 1949, and has released more than 50 albums since that have yielded popular songs like "The Thrill is Gone," "Three O'Clock Blues," and "You Upset Me Baby." King, a 1987 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is known for his precise and sparse guitar style in which he plays individual strings instead of chords, coaxing his unmistakable sound by bending and holding notes. Today he plays concerts sitting down because of his diabetic condition, but that doesn't stop fans from scooping up tickets to see this still-vital living legend who influenced guitarists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to John Mayer and Derek Trucks.

    BB King at Humphreys

by SadAboutBB on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Venue was spectacular, as always. Unfortunately, BB King was not. I'm so sad because I am a fan and have waited too long to see him in concert. He was either drunk or just extremely out of it. He barely sang 2 lines out of every song except for Your Are My Sunshine. The band was great, but strangely stood there and pretended like nothing was wrong. They just kept playing and playing and songs seemed to never end. I wish he had people around him who could tell him it's time to retire. It was so bad and I was sorry that I went. Save your money and buy Live at Cook County Jail.

BB King Is it Time to Retire?

by SFZbb on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I have been wanting to see BB King for years and I guess I wanted too long. I was disappointed in the show, as he sang very little and hardly played Lucille at all. The band was great at covering for him, but I think it is time for BB to retire. They proped him up in a chair at the front of the stage and I actually felt sorry for him when I left the show.

So glad to see this Living Legend!!!!!

by RRCD on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

BB gave us all he had! Bits of songs that he remembered, discordant notes on his guitar. Connecting with his audience, throwing candy to us at the end of the show. He won't be here much longer. It was an honor to be there. I think those of us who stayed did so out of a sacred commitment to show this man how he and his music have impacted our lives.

    Ouch

by Anonymous on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Unless the booking was an attempt to show what happens when greatness leaves, to showcase the elderly, or to insure the people employed by B.B. continue to have income for the short-term while they find other employment; then Humphreys should be embarrassed that they booked the concert. There was at least $300,000 generated by the thousands of us in the audience. While I am sure that we witnessed one of Mr. King's final performances, this performance shouldn't have taken place.

Time for a Legend to retire

by Eduardo on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Unfortunately he has passed his time. No more guitar solos and some cheese songs like You're My Sunshine played over and over again.

Terrible, awful, borders on elderly abuse

by CaliforniaKick on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I love B.B King. He is a blues icon and a national treasure. I have seen him many, many times and left his shows on a musical high. This was not the case. I know he is 88 years old, so of course he gets the respect for that. This being said, this show was awful. Awful, terrible and sad. I don't know if he realized he was performing or not. The other reviews sum it up. Hardly playing, talking to the audience , his band horrible, out of sync. Bad, bad , bad and sad. The tickets were not cheap, $135.00 for dinner and a show. At least I have the memory of many great, beautiful shows. It seems he is being paraded around to keep the income flowing for the band and others who depend on him for income. Time to let B.B Kind have a much needed rest. No reason whatsoever to attend another B.B. King show. It's over for him. Thank you B.B for all the wonderful music you have given to the world. Time to hang it up.

Sad to see a legend unable to perform.

by Mudgely on 8/30/14Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

It was so sad to see. Mr. King was unable to play anything on his guitar. At the age of 89, he should retire. I feel cheated that I paise $150 for tickets on the representation that he was still able to perform.

    BB King - Colorado Springs

by Anonymous on 8/15/14BB King Tour - Colorado Springs

BB King was in Colorado Springs last night. It was a very sad and disappointing event. I say save your money and buy some of his music. The show if you want to call it that was in a work "Awful". It was an exploit of an elderly and ill man.

    SAD, but TRUE.....Terrible, terrible

    by tshaw444 on 7/29/14Uptown Theatre - Napa

Saw B.B. King a few months ago at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, CA. It was the worst of any kind of music show I have ever seen. I felt so bad for the guy. We got some music from the band before B.B. came on, but after that it was nothing but talk, mumble, and family introductions????, and the constant passing out of little trinkets: little key chains, whistles, etc. NO Concert was played...AT ALL. The house lights were up the entire time, and the only thing B.B. played was a 15 SECOND riff from "The Thrill is Gone", and that's IT. Watching the band's faces and body language was painful....they ALL looked a nasty combination of depressed and embarrassed. I felt the same. It's over.

Alas, the man is 88 years old

by TheHebrewHammer on 7/28/14Warner Theatre - Washington

Let me preface this review by saying I realize B.B. King is 88 and a legend, so he deserves some breaks. That being said, I am glad I saw him 15 years ago when he actually played most of his set. Hid band opened up with two songs, and it was clear they are very talented. B.B. then came out before the third song, sat down, and did some noodling on the guitar. he then started introducing the band, and halfway through he kind of stopped, and started playing a song. All in all, he sang/played guitar on about four songs, including "The Thrill is Gone", Rock Me Baby", and a sing-along of "You are my Sunshine". He was constantly distracted by audience members yelling out, such that other members yelled at them to "shut up so he'll play". I saw people just get up and leave, as he was chatting with members in the front rows, to the exclusion and dismay of everyone else in the crowd. If you want to see a legend, then by all mean do so. The man can still pay the guitar, and he still oozes charisma. But don't expect the 1950s B.B. King (like the poster they were selling), expect you'll see what you'll see, an 88 year old legend trying to put his best foot forward.

B.B.King on July 10, 2014 at Hampton Beach, NH

by LongtimefanofBBKing on 7/28/14Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

The B.B.King that I saw on Thursday, July 10, 2014 on the stage of the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in Hampton Beach, NH was not the B.B.King I was hoping for. The B.B.King that I saw that evening was an 88-year-old man who seemed to be very tired, could sing but only twice finished an entire verse of a song and could play his guitar but only the cliches and never once what I'd call a "solo." The B.B.King I saw spent a good twenty minutes introducing the superb 8-piece band backing him up and then forgot to introduce the lead trumpet player/band leader. (This was the second "number" of the show!) B.B. spent most of the time during the 1 hour that he was on stage talking with the folks in the front rows, throwing out guitar picks, "flirting" with a few of the women sitting near the stage and stopping whatever he was doing - playing or singing - to pose and smile whenever anyone came up near the stage to take his picture. He played only two actual songs: "Rock Me Baby" and "The Thrill Is Gone." Then, after an instrumental number that gave the band members a chance to take some solos - during which B.B. would either fiddle on his guitar or do more of his posing - he called "The Thrill Is Gone" again. The band looked really confused, but they soldiered on and at least this second time, B.B. sang an entire verse of this song. Two words kept coming to mind as I drove home that night: "sad" and "retire." As a long time fan of B.B. King, I was very, very disapointed in his performance that evening.

    Hey, it's B.B.

by Shervivor on 7/28/14Warner Theatre - Washington

B.B. is 88 years young and still doing his thing. He isn't too spry but he still has the voice and the great attitude. It's B.B., he will always be an iconic figure of Blues.

    B.B. King still got it!!

by Littlebear02 on 7/27/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

At 88 yrs old, this amazingly gifted man played for 1 hour, 15 min. He was sincere and talked about how much his family meant to him. He thanked his fans numerous times and shared his faith in God. He truly touched my heart!

BB King full of life at 88

    by PD5054 on 7/24/14Indian Ranch - Webster

BB King at Indian Ranch was phenomenal. We had a blast. At 88 he's still playing the blues at their best. Couldn't have enjoyed the show more. Terrific!!!

B.B. King on stage less than one hour

by Rskier on 7/23/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

B.B. King was great, as was his band. However, total time of the performance was just over one hour and 15 minute, and B.B. King was on stage less than one hour. Very disappointing and not worth the charge for admission. Have heard this about other performances at Penn's Peak also.

He's a legend but needs to retire

by EDIPete on 7/23/14NYCB theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Saw him last year. He told stories all night. Played a few licks on the guitar but that was about it. The band behind him played in between his stories.

B.B. I love you but it's time to retire

by Caribechick on 7/22/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I love B.B. but the show was a real disappointment. The opening set featured his band and was great - they are all top musicians. Around 8:30 PM, B.B. came on stage, spent the next 15 minutes introducing the band, then played his only blues song of the night. This was followed by a lot of friendly chit chat, then a couple more songs - "You Are My Sunshine" and "When the Saints Come Marching In" - in a guitarless, no blues sing-a-long. At 9:15 PM - 45 minutes after he walked in - B.B. says he has a curfew and has to end the show. The man is a legend and I still revere his music. But he took our hard earned dollars and we got little in return. Also, beware of Penn's Peak seating. If you get an end seat by a support column on the balcony, you won't see the show unless you stand.

    Blues Legend

by HandN on 7/22/14Warner Theatre - Washington

Love and respect BB King as a Blues Legend but this concert was not what was expected. He did not play many of his greatest hits.
