About the Bayou Classic
In 2025, Celebrating its 52nd year, the Bayou Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of excellence and camaraderie within the HBCU community. Year after year, fans gather in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend to witness the thrilling football matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, accompanied by the electrifying Battle of the Bands & Greek Show and the highly anticipated halftime show featuring two of the greatest marching bands in the nation. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.mybayouclassic.com. And follow Bayou Classic on Facebook at @MyBayouClassic and on Instagram at @bayouclassic74.
History of the Bayou Classic
Southern University first played Grambling State in football in 1930, when the latter was known as the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute. It was not until 1958 that Grambling joined the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and the two teams started to play on a yearly basis. The prominence of both teams greatly increased in the 1960s and early '70s, with the rise of coach Eddie Robinson's Tiger teams, featuring such Grambling legends as Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan, and Southern's success featuring such stars as Harold Carmichael and Mel Blount. The Bayou Classic was first held at Tulane Stadium in 1974, before moving to the brand-new Louisiana Superdome the following year. The dome has held the Bayou Classic every year since, except for 2005 when it was moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and 2021, when a rescheduled Bayou Classic conflicted with renovations to the stadium.
No Bayou Classic weekend is complete without the legendary Battle of the Bands, between Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and Southern's Human Jukebox. The Friday night spectacular features hundreds of marchers on each side performing alongside Grambling's Orchesis dance line and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern. In 2015, the Waterford crystal trophy which had been awarded to the Bayou Classic winner since the late '80s was retired and donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture by both universities. Due to the postponement of the 2020 NCAA Division I FCS season, the first-ever springtime Bayou Classic game was scheduled for April 17, 2021, in Shreveport.
I Love coming to the city it’s just different from any other city great food and great people
As always, The Bayou Classic is an HBCU staple that exceeds family fun, tradition and excellence!
When I ordered my tickets I was not able to tell what side my team was going to be on. So I ended up on the wrong side and surrounded by fans from the other team
Due to dishonorment of my parking pass I was unable to get in Garage 2 due to being full. Very disgusted lost my money $25.
Everything was great with the exception of not having a top on my soda
First of all, thank you Security for keeping this fabulous event safe! Job well done. My only complaint is the purse security. With ticket purchases, it should be informed most prominently. Also, if enforced; then enforce consistently.
Had a great time at the game this year. Haven't been in over 10 or 15 years, but was glad to see this event is still going strong. Despite the messy weather, I had a good experience. The only improvements I would make is providing more food options specific to New Orleans tradition. Also, some of the adult drink providers appeared to be inexperienced and unable to make simple decisions. One vendor in particular charged the same price for a cup of ice as if I had ordered a drink....makes no sense.
They Bayou Classic always lives up to its core mission. A time to celebrate excellence, culture, education, sportsmanship, innovation. Seeing so many generational families with their children is a wonderful sight. Always pleased to see the Legacy of Southern University and Grambling University flourish, Attending Southern University was then and continues to be a life-changing event.
Our seats were good, but the screens near us were too small. With or without glasses, I couldn’t read some of the writing of them.
Both events were filled with love, family atmosphere, fun, friendly banter between rivals , good music/game.
From the Battle of the Bands and step show to the game was an outstanding experience. The celebration of football, family, and the traditions surrounding Historically Black Colleges and Universities was on full display. Over 63,000 witness Black excellence at its best. If you never been to a HBCU Class. you are missing a lot!
I enjoyed the environment of 2 HBCU coming together and showcase their talent on the football field and in the stands. I love when I’m pulling for Southern and they always have that Grambling fan nearby, (smiling) but most importantly it’s clean no fighting or altercation taking place and now that my kids grown they have a better understanding of what it’s like to see when 2 HBCU get together not just to compete but to have fun in doing so.
My over all experience was great but as far as the pricing and the parking I had issues. The fact that if you sat on Southern side (assuming cause they were the home team) you paid $20 more for either night. I didnt like that. I had a issue with pulling up my parking pass and then the garage i was assigned to park in. I was told it was closed and i had to figure it out. And i prepaid for parking. I was very thankful for the parking attendee because she made it a point to help me other wise i wouldve been S. O. L.
Attending the Bayou Classic is a nostalgic experience but one that everyone who enjoys culture, football and bands should attend. Purchasing a 100 level ticket was the best route to go. I felt like I was on the field as the football team and bands played. 2022 Bayou Classic is one for the books. My family and I had a great time!
The Bayou Classic is an awesome testament of an HBCU experience. The game was great and the Battle of the Bands & Greek Show was top notch!
The game great Bands great Traffic HORRIBLE!!! Police presence should’ve been out especially in the rain and the number of attendees.
I enjoyed the atmosphere and game were great! Great upgrades to the dome made it visually pleasing as well.
Bayou Classic continues to get better every year. The rain did not impact how much tun we had in New Orleans..I'm a Southern University Alumni.
Everything was so fast and easy. I was able to keep them in my wallet for fast access, but the wallet ticket didn’t have the barcode which luckily an option on the app
I had a awesome time. My seat were in a good section and I didn’t miss a thing..
