About the Bayou Classic
In 2025, Celebrating its 52nd year, the Bayou Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of excellence and camaraderie within the HBCU community. Year after year, fans gather in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend to witness the thrilling football matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, accompanied by the electrifying Battle of the Bands & Greek Show and the highly anticipated halftime show featuring two of the greatest marching bands in the nation. History of the Bayou Classic
Southern University first played Grambling State in football in 1930, when the latter was known as the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute. It was not until 1958 that Grambling joined the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and the two teams started to play on a yearly basis. The prominence of both teams greatly increased in the 1960s and early '70s, with the rise of coach Eddie Robinson's Tiger teams, featuring such Grambling legends as Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan, and Southern's success featuring such stars as Harold Carmichael and Mel Blount. The Bayou Classic was first held at Tulane Stadium in 1974, before moving to the brand-new Louisiana Superdome the following year. The dome has held the Bayou Classic every year since, except for 2005 when it was moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and 2021, when a rescheduled Bayou Classic conflicted with renovations to the stadium.
No Bayou Classic weekend is complete without the legendary Battle of the Bands, between Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and Southern's Human Jukebox. The Friday night spectacular features hundreds of marchers on each side performing alongside Grambling's Orchesis dance line and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern. In 2015, the Waterford crystal trophy which had been awarded to the Bayou Classic winner since the late '80s was retired and donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture by both universities. Due to the postponement of the 2020 NCAA Division I FCS season, the first-ever springtime Bayou Classic game was scheduled for April 17, 2021, in Shreveport.

I had such a great time!! If you've never experienced The Bayou Classic, it is a must attend, bucket list event!
I will be ordering tickets again for next year. Loved my seats.
Watching the Bayou Classic from the Humana Suite with community partners and friends was an awesome experience. A great time was had by all!!!!
This was a phenomenal experience. This was my first time attending the Bayou Classic and my first time in New Orleans as an adult. The game was amazing. The environment was safe and fun. The opening acts, halftime show and fan feast were fantastic. I will be back again.
The event was great! Being able to use my phone to gain access was very nice!
This was the 50th anniversary for the Bayou Classic and everything was done well. The staff was friendly everything was organized well. We really had fun!!
This 50th year was outstanding! The game, the bands, the performers, and the fans made this experience exceptional!
Football was fine and made better by our team winning!! Cold in the stadium (up high in cheap seats!) and noisy with 2 fabulous bands playing but the marching displays were seriously amazing and I could have watched them all day…
Great seats. Love the location near the stairs. We didn't have to walk too far up.
The battle of the bands was great. The band competition was okay, the step shows was not great, and the school bands were great.
Teams competed but refs made many questionable calls. Enjoyed the team rally at the end. Wish it had been present throughout!
Great seats and great experience! Easy admission and Southern won!
The whole event was very exciting and fun except for the seats they were very small and I’m only 5’2” and my legs were so cramped up from lack of leg room my 6’ husband was so uncomfortable we had to leave in the 3rd quarter
It was the best experience I have had in the 28 years I have been attending. I always love to reunite with fellow Southern University Alumni and connect with my fellow HBCU's members of Grambling State University!!
My family and I enjoyed our second year of Bayou Classic! The staff, cleanliness and food selection made for another great year in the Superdome! We will be back.
The staff throughout the entire SuperDome were fantastic. Efficient and polite is how the staff dealt with everyone; I witnessed that numerous times during the experience.
2022 Bayou Classic was EPIC!!! Short lines to get in to Superdome, a more modern and comfortable facility, and faster concession lines. Let’s do it again next year.
The traffic was horrendous! We got in the game right before the Human Jukebox took the field for the halftime show. We prepaid for parking only to be told they were full once we arrived to park. It was a terrible experience as far as traffic & parking.
I Love coming to the city it’s just different from any other city great food and great people
