About the Bayou Classic
In 2025, Celebrating its 52nd year, the Bayou Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a symbol of excellence and camaraderie within the HBCU community. Year after year, fans gather in New Orleans over Thanksgiving weekend to witness the thrilling football matchup between Southern University and Grambling State University, accompanied by the electrifying Battle of the Bands & Greek Show and the highly anticipated halftime show featuring two of the greatest marching bands in the nation. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.mybayouclassic.com. And follow Bayou Classic on Facebook at @MyBayouClassic and on Instagram at @bayouclassic74.
History of the Bayou Classic
Southern University first played Grambling State in football in 1930, when the latter was known as the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute. It was not until 1958 that Grambling joined the Jaguars in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and the two teams started to play on a yearly basis. The prominence of both teams greatly increased in the 1960s and early '70s, with the rise of coach Eddie Robinson's Tiger teams, featuring such Grambling legends as Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams and Buck Buchanan, and Southern's success featuring such stars as Harold Carmichael and Mel Blount. The Bayou Classic was first held at Tulane Stadium in 1974, before moving to the brand-new Louisiana Superdome the following year. The dome has held the Bayou Classic every year since, except for 2005 when it was moved to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, and 2021, when a rescheduled Bayou Classic conflicted with renovations to the stadium.
No Bayou Classic weekend is complete without the legendary Battle of the Bands, between Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and Southern's Human Jukebox. The Friday night spectacular features hundreds of marchers on each side performing alongside Grambling's Orchesis dance line and the Fabulous Dancing Dolls of Southern. In 2015, the Waterford crystal trophy which had been awarded to the Bayou Classic winner since the late '80s was retired and donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture by both universities. Due to the postponement of the 2020 NCAA Division I FCS season, the first-ever springtime Bayou Classic game was scheduled for April 17, 2021, in Shreveport.
Great atmosphere. The battle of the bands was awesome.
Went to Champion Square first, I imagine that is to hype everyone up. It was interesting, but the explicit lyrics should NOT be allowed. Even inside the Superdome, explicit lyrics were played in the rap music. DISTASTEFUL and DISRESPECTFUL! This is a time for family-- meaning elders and kids. That part should be ELIMINATED. Otherwise, it was a great time!
The Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands was A-MAZING! Grambling's sound and arrangement were fantastic and Kendrick Lamar's "wacced out murals"was insane! How have they already got this down and this song just came out?! Bonkers!!!!!!
Omg, it’s always so beautiful and clean every time I visit for the Bayou Classic. The staff is amazing. The view is amazing. Most definitely coming here!
Spectacular it was a great experience I will do it again in a heart beat
It’s a vibe! We enjoy the Bayou Classic each year…a good way for us to have fun during Thanksgiving Weekend. Recommend you attend and support HBCUs 365.
The food of course was great. We try to come each year to bring our family. God has been good to us and we share with our family and friends. Thank you! We had just a great time!
Love Bayou Classic, can't wait for 2024 season. When will tickets be sold.
The ledger showed that Southern was the visiting team. I paid for tickets to sit on Southern’s side. I wound up with seatings on Grambling side. We ask about the ticket seatings, I was told don’t worry about it. Just go and enjoy the game. I had good seats just on the wrong side. No one could help. The response from Ticketmaster was, the event is over. There’s nothing they can do.Never Again.
I was sitting in 328 C. When I got to a C gate, I was told I had to go to B. It took about 35 to 40 minutes before the line moved. I missed the kick off. Also, my phone wouldn't pull up the tickets. I had to get out of line and go further away.
Security was a mess. One line for people with bags and the rest of the lines for no bags?!?!? Most people have at least a small bag or clutch to keep personal items while they're out amd about so this was very unrealistic. Also, my small clutch was okay the night before at Battle of the Bands but the SAME purse was not okay at Bayou Classic. It made no sense and caused me to have to return to my room and miss half the game. I won't be back sadly.
Attending this year‘s Bayou Classic was such a great experience. The two college rivalry’s did not disappoint. Showcasing of great showmanship, athleticism and supporting academic excellence was completely in the mix all Bayou Classic weekend long! Such an amazing experience. Will definitely return next year!!!
The Bayou Classic continues to be a grand event yearly, bring together professionals, politicians, young adults and a range of good people supporting a great caused.
Wow, enjoyed the entertainment plaza, but wish the official 50th commemorative T SHIRT would have been available for putchase at the game. Wish I could get a program for such an epic 59th milestone event. Fantasia was a great experience we enjoyed!! The game was great, the BANDS were greater!!
Great seats to watch a game that came down to the wire. Fighting Tigers...
I’m blue because my team (Grambling) lost the game, but can report that everything Ticketmaster did was just as expected — great. My ticket price was reasonable, my seats were real good, and all related to the ticket delivery and transfers to me and to my seat mates went perfectly.
One of my favorite yearly events !! Akways have a geeat time !
This is a rich tradition for my family!!! I am part of a long legacy of Southern Alum!!! This year was EXTRA special, because it was my mom’s birthday AND the Jaguar’s Won!!!
I had the time of my life in New Orleans. It was a blast. First time at the super dome and it was a vibe ya hear me. Fantasia performance was awesome. Can’t wait for next year
It's always a party in New Orleans but this event is special. Jus the HBCU environment alone is spectacular but all of the other festivities that comes with it really take it over the top. The people, the game, the bands, the food etc. I look forward to it every year.
