The local talent of the Des Moines ballet did a beautiful press of the Nutcracker. Classic way to get the Christmas season rolling. Thank you for sharing your talent and hard work.
Great experience with extremely talented and professional dancers. Hoyt is both grand and intimate at the same time. Wonderful all around and worth the cost to be up close.
The performance was very well done. Te efforts Ballet Iowa put forth to give opportunities to such a large group making up the cast are to be commended. It was a delightful evening. Thank you.
I didn’t realize that this performance was an altered Nutcracker. The costumes were beautiful, the ballet was well executed. But I didn’t enjoy the new storyline. And the ballet felt shorter than usual. Lastly, I was in the balcony and the music seemed blaring. Disappointed and wish that the original had been performed. I would not have purchased tickets had I known this would’ve the case.
Loved this year’s performance; I thought all the performers did excellent. I’m not the least bit biased, but my granddaughters were terrific at being mice. I’m sure it was a great experience for them and everyone involved.
The new costumes and backdrops were very nice. The storyline and choreography changes were creative but not the Christmas tradition we come for every year. If you weren't familiar with the story the scene progression didn't flow well enough to understand it. The focus on the books rather than the toy Nutcracker diluted the storyline. The children's sections were very cute. Who doesn't enjoy cute kids doing cute things? Mother Earth seemed on the verge of toppling over at any moment. The dragon fly seemed like filler. The stag choreography was a bit over the top but the doe gave good flavor to the role - perky, prancy, happy and smooth. The Betta scene was wonderfully performed and was both esthetically and technically exciting. It was good to see some favorites. The flowers and petals were colorful and delicate. The sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier and the snow Queen and King were lovely and represented their dance skills very well. Overall, the placement and execution of actual ballet steps was spotty but the moments that followed the original storyline were breathtaking.
The dancers were exceptional and of course the music but they changed it completely and took parts out. I enjoy the original story of the Nutcracker and was expecting that.
My girls and I loved the new redition of the nutcracker. We will be back next year and make it our new tradition.
We loved the new updated version of The Nutcracker especially the second act!
Winderful to see young folk get experience on the big stage. They did a wonderful job.
The theater was really really cool! The content was great and the artists were also wonderful. I would give it 5 stars but the mask police in there were over bearing. I was simply having a drink of water and a gentleman said very loudly and drew the crowds attention to me when he said “sir put your mask on or leave” it felt a little out of line and sadly that is at the top of the memories for the event.
The new Artistic Director should be very proud! Not only were the colors of the new costumes stunning, the music sounded like an actual orchestra. The Para-Mar Dancers were wonderful. My favorite part was the teeny dancers coming from the audience onto the stage as dragonflies. Visually and musically very fulfilling experience.
The show was not the nutcracker! Clara was great and it had other great parts but they changed so much of the story it was goofy. The second act was like a child’s dance recital. The professionals did not dance enough. Pretty disappointed... the nutcracker is a holiday tradition for us and this was not it.
Ballet Des Moines has the best shows! Hands down the best Nutcracker ever!
I was able to check two things off my bucket list - going to a ballet and seeing the Nutcracker. I thoroughly enjoyed it. While there was a few minor hiccups, the dancers recovered and still put on a great performance.
Great location!! So much history in that theater. Performance was great!
Great performance just nice for holiday season family fun time. Look forward to it every year :)
The music was fantastic and the dancers were so fun to watch. I love the story of the Nutcracker and this show made it come to life.
parents with children under the age of 10 should not be allowed in. Had the back of my seat KICKED during the entire ballet, making it a very unpleasant experience. The ballet it's self was great.
