Great sound but short set list

by ProgBlog on 10/20/14The Canyon - Agoura Hills

Asia sounded great, but the set list came in at only 14 songs with no encore (most other venues got an 18 song set list). The highlight of course was Carl Palmer on drums, the new guitarist Sam Coulson was good but lacked Steve Howe's subtle touches on certain songs. John Wetton's voice was in fine form and Geoff Downes was his usual steady self on keyboards. Asia played only one track from their new album Gravitas which was a little disappointing. Still glad we went but Asia you need to play longer!

    Asia was phenomenal!

by Swashbuckler on 10/9/14Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs - Wilkes-Barre

Carl Palmer was fantastic, John Wetton's vocals were spot on and Geoff Downes playing was superb. New guitarist was really good. Wish they could have played 4 more hours!

    Asia was horrible

by Dawnrt on 10/8/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

We were very disappointed in the concert. All the band did was sing and out of sync at best. They are not very good entertainers. We left the concert half way thru we couldn't stand another min.

They should have played an encore. Besides that it was a very good concert.

    Asia was great

by brschll4 on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

Asia was such a good concert - all of the band members are so talented-even the new guy(lead guitar player). The only complaint I had was the length of the show; they only played for about an hour and 15 min. which includes the drum solo by Carl palmer(maybe the best I have ever seen). Overall Though I was still very happy with the show- John Wetton's voice sounded as good or better than ever and Jeff Downes did a short keyboard solo that was great as well. I do miss Steve Howe on guitar but I wont go there, I'll just say that if you liked the old Asia stuff go see the show I think you will be glad you did. ps the new stuff : Omega & Phoenix are very good!

Carl Palmer is the driving force

by MisterDigger on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

This is only the third time for me seeing Asia in concert since 1982, and I must say that Carl Palmer stole the show this time. My thoughts were that if he ever left the band, there would be no more Asia. Granted, he hardly ever gets songwriting credits, but without him they would be nothing. The second most impressive one of the evening is the new young guitarist named Sam Coulson. Great choice in choosing him. John Wetton's voice and bass were very melodic as usual, but Geoff Downes looked absolutely ridiculous in an outfit that looked like pajamas. I explained to others that one does not need that mountain of keyboards because it is all about presets. So given all of the required presets (and with deep pockets), one might as well pick a different keyboard for each preset. Even back in 1982, a musician friend told me that one Fairlight could do the trick for live music requirements and the rest were for show. (The same goes for many guitars on stage, which have alternate tunings, but that is actually a necessity do to the many different tunings). Having expected two sets of 9-songs each, I was slightly disappointed to see that they switched to one long set and cut many songs out, but I only really missed hearing Finger On The Trigger. The new song Valkyrie also sounded better on CD than being played live.

Great concert. The band was wonderful and it was a great venue.

Carl Palmer still kicks ads on guitar. Hard Rock is a great venue for the talents of the keyboardist with nine sets in key boards.

    ASIA STILL GREAT

by jthetyger on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

This being my 5th time seeing this band with 2 of generally considered greatest musicians of the 70's Prog Rock era which I had followed from Crimso/ELP early days (and UK) and the later comer keyboard wiz, and all did not dissapoint. From the opening of Sole Survivor it was strong with of course always amazing CP percussion and the vocal prowess of JW strikes you right off the bat. G Downes maybe the lowest in mix sometimes but know he is great anyway and as he did with Yes always gets the job done. HOWEver, they miss Mr. Howe (which is why can't give the 5 stars) as he was obviously such a strong part of the total sound; the young SC did good job with fill in but is just not near the level of SH as we all know. That all said, the crowd was somewhat mellow for a Sat. night but CP & JW were always trying to rev them up and got it going to a pretty good level even through the newer unfamiliar material from Gravitas and of course later the CP drum solo always does the trick and into the end with Only Time Will Tell, Heat of the Moment and such. Still great and entertaining show from these aging but great musicians that hopefully will keep going and return to the area again!

    Another great one!!

by RogueRedhead on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

Best of the four I've been to! When they first took the stage there just wasn't much energy until about halfway through the song. You could feel the energy build and the connection with the crowd was electrifying. The new addition - Sam Coulson - is an artist that made me not even miss Steve Howe. John Wetton's smooth and velvet voice during the acoustic portion of 'Voice of America' was magical and the transition from acoustic to full blown was intense and was a highlight. The only disappointing thing - only one song from the new album. Was waiting for 'Til We Meet Again'!!

    Asia in Biloxi

by Englshguy on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

The show was just over a disappointing 80 minutes long, far shorter than any concert I have seen before - at least for any musical acts that are relevant. The sound quality was substandard for a few songs, with the guitar and keyboards being drowned out by the drums and bass. The flashing of an intense bright light into the crowd was annoying and unnecessary, at least on the balcony seats. The rest of our row was complaining also. Musicianship was very good as you would expect from these guys. Song highlights, Only Time will Tell, An Extraordinary Life, Open your Eyes. The songs Go and Wildest Dreams sounded poor. I expected more from the band - more songs and better sound quality. Catch you next time. BTW - all their albums are great, especially Gravitas, XXX, and Omega.

Great Show - They Still Rock

by CWYL on 10/7/14Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

John Wetton can still really sing and Carl Palmer on the drums is worth the price of admission alone. I thought it was a great show and took me back to the 1980s. Loved it.

    Asia can still bring it

by Kreegs on 10/6/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Really enjoyed the Asia show again this year! John Wetton's vocals are timeless and their new releases still have that familiar Asia sound. And Carl Palmer is still an animal on the drums.

ASIA is still one of the best!!!!!!!!!

by beatlejam on 10/6/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Asia has always been one of my favorite bands. I have all of their CDs (Wetton-era, of course) and had seen them before at this very venue four years ago with Steve Howe. Well, as much as I admire Howe, I think this new guy on guitar, Sam Coulson, has brought new life/blood to the band....They seem more energized....And Coulson plays great, with even more “bite” than Howe.....Very impressive....There were some nice jokes about his youthfulness, too!....So, I think the show was even better than the one four years ago: better set list (with a song from every album represented), better pace and energy, and flawlessly performed (the original 3 as good as ever, new guy works very well).....GRADE: A

    Asia @ Variety Playhouse

    by Mike1162 on 10/6/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Great show!! The band was is top form great energy!!, John Wetton's voice was as clear as ever and he was very interactive with the audience.... Geoff Downes was stellar on the keyboards, Carl Palmer was amazing (and due to the intimate size of the venue, about 500 seats) we could actually see him and witness his incredible talent, Sam Coulson (the new to us lead guitar) was a great fit with the guys.

    They ROCK!

by gpetersfan on 10/6/14Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Saw them for the first time 2 yrs ago at the same venue even though I've been a fan since their debut album. With new guitarist Sam Coulson (aka the Kid), Asia ran through all their biggest hits. Sam Coulson's guitar work was phenomenal. John Wetton sounded fresh vocally. Geoff Downes with his 9 trays of keyboards (yes, 9) sounded great as well. Carl Palmer never seems to age and played like he did 30 or 40 yrs ago. We took my 10 yr old son to this show for his first rock concert. He loved it!!! I didn't have to worry about wardrobe malfunctions or incessant cussing on the stage. Great music!!! Got to meet the band before the concert and they were very friendly. Nice to know that these rock legends don't have a big chip on their shoulder or tons of attitude.
