“Mr Sandoval's Playing is Spectacular”  New York Times

“ He's one of the Best “  Dizzy Gillespie

6 Time Grammy Award winning jazz trumpeter ARTURO SANDOVAL, a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, is touring Australia in June 2013. Cuban-born Sandoval has evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

A subject of a movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” starring Andy Garcia, Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes gives us the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical. He is recognised as one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our time.

Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti and Stan Getz to John Williams and the Boston Pops, and in the Super Bowl with Tony Bennet and Patti LaBelle plus Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. Arturo Sandoval is truly a prominent and legendary musician.

  • Auturo Sandoval-Good concert!

by Blanchsrd on 5/27/13Williamsburg Lodge - WilliamsburgRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the mixture of the different types of Jazz that Arturo and his band played, from Jazz funk to straight-ahead Jazz. I especially enjoyed the songs dedicated to Dizzy and Oscar. The band was talented and was a good group to play with Arturo. The only disappointment was the person in the audience that would not keep quiet and was disruptive during the concert.

This shoe was outstanding. Mr Sandoval was amazing and a professional in his dealing with a persistent heckler. The music was great and all members of the band were energetic and on point. I only wish the people presenting the show could have asked the heckler to quiet down or leave.

  • Arturo Sandoval brought magic in his music!!!

by ecobarth on 5/26/13Williamsburg Lodge - WilliamsburgRating: 5 out of 5

I enjoyed the way he addressed the audience. His performance was impeccable. Although the sound system did not fully helped his band, they played so intense and with the feeling that reached all of us in the auditorium.

  • Great performance with some bumps along the way

by CraiginVA on 5/26/13Williamsburg Lodge - WilliamsburgRating: 4 out of 5

First the good- Arturo Sandoval is a wonderful performer and a great musician, and put on a lively and entertaining show. Nothing in the review to follow should reflect on him in any way, but... The bad- first of all, who at the VA Arts Fest thought it was a good idea to put a 9-time Grammy winner in the ballroom of a conventional center? Surely there was someplace else in Williamsburg (College of WM, maybe) that had a venue. Pretty cheesy and unprofessional, but could be overlooked, except for the few fools in the crowd who essentially heckled the performer throughout the show. Why one guy in particular wasn't tossed is a mystery, and reflects again on the venue and sponsor. Arturo cleared was bothered by all the noise. Want to know why there was no encore? Well, there you go. VA Arts Fest will be getting the same email.

This was my first time @ the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and I really enjoyed it. Great location, great acoustics, comfortable seating, friendly staff. Warm, intimate setting with an open bar, which really adds to the experience!

  • Never disappoints

Arturo is an amazing talent who never disappoints. His range is over three octaves and he is never over-the top, just good, quality music. His band was great, too.

A wonderful show from an artist with a true history of appreciation in FREEDOM. The venue is great to feel like you are part of the show, not a bad seat in the house. TFG22.

  • Sandoval is an incredible performer

by Mmgr on 10/28/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Hands down, one of the most talented performers you will ever see. It is pure joy to watch him. His tribute to his mentor Dizzy Gillespie was so tender and moving, contrasted to his exuberance on most of the set. The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is the perfect venue because it is intimate. You become a part of the performance. We are looking forward to his return next year.

  • Beyond Amazing

by Jennyfreetobe on 9/21/11Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

This was a present for my boyfriend who has played trumpet for over 6 years and he was totally amazed. Sandoval is such a talented musician. He was born to do what he does and it shows. Anyone who has the chance to see him should go without thinking twice about it:) i would go see him a million times if possible.

  • Great Performance, sound not so great

by Ricardorico on 9/12/11Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 4 out of 5

Wow, is that photo old. Amazing playing from Arturo and company as always! His energy and enthusiasm are infectious. Wildest version of Night In Tunisia I've ever heard. Loved his story about coming to America to, among other things, learn perfect English. I was seated in the second row of the loges near the center and the sound was very uneven. Way too much bass drum, not enough bass guitar. Most solos weren't brought up until a few bars into them and then too much. Couldn't hear the sax section at all when the brass was playing. Guest singer, Becky Martin sounded harsh and piercing at times. I expected better sound from such a new facility. But the poor mix was secondary to all the great music and musicians. Fun to see Andy Garcia on bongos. Wish the program had listed the band members. Come on VPAC, that's standard procedure. Give credit where it's due. So all in all, I loved Arturo and the band, but the venue needs to work the kinks out. Can't wait for the upcoming album tribute to Diz!
