Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Sound was great.

by Believe it on 5/4/24The Astro - La Vista

The Astro needs to wait before the show is over to start sweeping the floors.

    Great show, great venue!

by JC on 5/4/24The Astro - La Vista

First time at the Astro. Loved the venue and Jason Isbell was great. Drink lines were short and staff was friendly. I live in Kansas City and wish we had a quality venue that offered indoor/outdoor stages with the kind of quality acts that I see on the schedule here. My only “complaint” was the communication on swapping tickets because the show moved from outside to inside. Dropped by at 600 hoping to pick up my tickets and come back, but that wasn’t allowed. Not a huge deal, but put a bit of a crimp in the plans for the night. Wish there was a better way to handle this, but the staff was super helpful and put seats were probably better than what I paid for! Can’t wait to return to another show here!

    Always a great time..Great Venue

by Dan on 5/4/24The Astro - La Vista

Jason and the 400 unit never disappoint. Best rock n roll band touring right now. Also the show was originally supposed to be outdoor at the Astro Amphitheater but because it was raining the show was moved indoors to the Astro theatre. Venue was really cool and had great sound. I ll definitely be back.

    Unbelievable

by Susan S. on 5/4/24The Astro - La Vista

Jason Isbell and his band absolutely rocked the house! His show was one of the best I’ve ever been to and you definitely get your money’s worth. The acoustics were top notch and his voice was strong and clear. Jason needs to be known to EVERYONE because he is one of the best songwriters and performers of our time! So lucky to have been at this show! His opening act, Jobi Rocco, was also fantastic and I’ve added her to my Pandora lineup. Wonderful night in Nebraska (traveling from Phoenix)

    Flat Sound

by Judith on 4/23/24The Sound Amphitheater - Gautier

We enjoyed the concert. Second event at the Sound and was great. We really enjoyed the North MS Allstars as they are our all time favs. The Sound has room for improvements, but we look forward to visiting the venue again in the future.

    Loved the North Mississippi Allstars!

by MWW on 4/22/24The Sound Amphitheater - Gautier

The Venue was good. I believe the stage should have been built higher as there is no upward slope or terracing where the audience sits. So if you bought good seats, and most people stand, you must stand too. I'll likely never buy premium seat here again. And will sit in the grass. Loved the North Mississippi Allstars, but will not likely see Jason Isbell again. I'm spoiled by Jazz and Bluegrass, and didn't care for the amount of distortion Jason and his band employed. I prefer my sounds quite a bit cleaner. I will see the North Mississippi Allstars again:)

North Mississippi Allstars perfect to open for Isbell, who’s at the top of his game. Brand new venue was on point- acoustics, amenities, vibe and even great weather. Song selection and energy was great - seems a good time was had by all!

Great performance! Didn’t even know who this group was, will definitely be downloading some of his music now. Great energy and nice sound. Knats were annoying this night. Be good if you can get city to spray prior to event.

    Jason

by Larkwood on 4/4/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

This was our 8th time seeing Jason so clearly, we are big fans. We have been to the Tabernacle in Atlanta to see Jason and some other acts and it is probably our favorite venus in Atlanta. We felt that it was one of his better shows, that featured a retrospective of his career going back to his days with Drive by Truckers. The staff of the venue were polite, and able to get us in quickly, ushers were available at every aisle and were helpful. We spend time in one of the lounges before the show and it was well staffed and comfortable. We were seated on the 300 level and the stairs to our seats is quite steep, but there is a handrail to assist. Exiting is very easy as there are doorways on every level. There is parking nearby for those that wish to drive and taxis are readily available to those that don't. We stayed at the Hilton downtown and walked to the venue and there are many other hotels nearby.

by Jimmy on 4/3/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

Long time Jason Isbell fan, first time seeing him in person. What a great show and the Tabernacle in Atlanta is one awesome place to watch a concert. Definitely hope to see Jason and The 400 unit again and would not hesitate to come back to the Tabernacle!

    Amazing, as always

    by Jimmy B on 4/3/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

Good mix of songs throughout the catalog! A couple of “Southeastern” songs to kick it off, some heady songs like “King of Oklahoma” that turned into barn burners, perennial crowd pleaser “Super 8”, a look back at DBT tunes (“Decoration Day”), and even an encore from The Cure (“Just Like Heaven”)!

    Jason Isbell NEVER Disappoints

    by Liz C on 4/3/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

Jason Isbell never disappoints as he performed four nights in a row at the tabernacle, and I had the pleasure of hitting two shows. Standing up the entire time, dancing your butt off, listening to him, built out our favorites. He sounded amazing…I love his sound, his vibe, his energy❤️

    Isbell awesome, Tabernacle overcrowded

by LoveGAmusic on 4/2/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

Anyone who appreciates high quality songwriting and/or killer guitar playing should go see Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. But, if you want to enjoy the show without rude, entitled people shoving you out of the way in general admission, buy a seat at the Tabernacle or go to an entirely different venue.

    Awesome show

by Carrie on 4/2/24Tabernacle - Atlanta

Best show ever!! So much talent on that stage!! The music was fantastic! The energy between the band members was so good! You could tell the band is like a family. Jason sounds just as good in person as he does on his records. I feel like his prices are fair also. I’ve seen him twice, and have 2 more shows to attend this year. He is by far one of my most favorite artists, and his band is equally as great! Love Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit!!
