About

Jacob Collier In Concert

Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.

But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.

By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.

Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.

After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.

    Captivating and unique

by Liz on 5/11/22House of Blues Boston - Boston

Hated the over one hour wait in the cold in line outside long after the doors had opened and 15 minutes after the show has begun Upset that the house of blues website said that proof of vaccination would be required at all concerts and it did not at this concert and I did not feel safe attending because of that even though I wore a mask

Jacob is out of this world amazing - Venue not so much

by Dhansel on 5/11/22House of Blues Boston - Boston

I've seen Jacob many times, and I'm a huge fan. I know each song intimately. Took the family to House of Blues on May 8th and we had balcony tix. I hoped they wouldn't be so bad due to the size of the venue. The view was fine. However, the SOUND sucked. The bass in the balcony was completely overloaded and masked the subtle nature of the playing that was happening onstage. Both Jacob and Robin's basses (plus kick drum) suffered the same fate. It was so overloaded, that the delicate harmonies were often masked and the piano disappeared as well. All you could hear was sub bass overload and distortion. I'm not sure I'm gonna blame the FOH mixer either, because when I moved positions (down) the problem was less. So, i'm gonna blame the venue and say they need to install baffles or something. Because it was ridiculously bad. Maybe it works for the normal HO Blues crowd, but Jacob's music is way to exacting for this venue, so I hope he doesn't return here. If he does, I'll have to suffer the mosh pit next to the mixing desk I guess. Otherwise, the venue seemed ok and is a nice size. Just don't go upstairs if you're remotely interested in things sounding like they are supposed to. BTW, I used to mix music (and film sound) in my younger days. Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, and in the studio with Sting and Dire Straits programming synths in the late 80s early 90s. So, spent lots of time in perfectly tuned, very loud rooms, so i'm not some Karen when it comes to sound and sound quality.

    Amazing!

by Kendra on 5/11/22House of Blues Boston - Boston

He’s a musicians musician. I haven’t seen anyone control a crowd the way he does since Bruce Springsteen. And he’s super high energy. Clearly had a lot of fun. I’ve seen him once before and will see him again.

    Brilliant show, disappointing venue

by jwpnc on 5/8/22The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

This show was great, the sound and lighting were brilliant, but the venue ended up being pretty disappointing. It was good enough for me, at 6'2" but for the other 3 in my group who were all in the 5'- 5'3" range, the venue just does not provide any good sight lines unless you pay an extra $40 per person for a VIP upgrade. We even showed up over an hour before doors opened to try to stake out a good spot, but there just wasn't any hope besides having paid an extra 160 dollars on top of the initial 200 we paid for our tickets. And for two of them, I tried to lift them so they could see, and was told, "I'm sorry, but you can't do that because you're blocking people behind you" as if we weren't having our view blocked by a large group of people who squeezed right in front of us in the 10 minutes before the show began. Do not recommend this venue if you aren't either first in line or at least 6 feet tall.

    A spectacle of virtuosity

by Blornsby on 5/7/22Terminal 5 - New York

It was an amazing show. Jacob’s insane expertise was exceptionally showcased and well paired with the rest of the band. I don’t think I’ve ever been as impressed with a performer.

That Was One Of The Best Shows I’ve Been To!!

by Artofunk on 5/3/22The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

Jacob is all that & more!! That was a two year wait which delivered more than what I imagined. When a artist has such an effect on his audience to bring them in harmony that’s beyond words & music, it’s magical, it’s felt, it can have a transcending response. The only thing I can ask for, wholeheartedly is this: Please Come Back To NC JC as a second round of this tour please!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😁

    Amazing...cannot recommend enough

by Flying J on 5/3/22The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

I was uncertain when I bought the tickets who exactly I was going to take: friend, date, or family. I brought my son, almost 15, with me to see the show. I learned about Jacob's work through Snarky Puppy, and I've seen a few Youtube videos of his music, and I've read the reviews--so I had some idea of what was in store. But to experience him live, and with my son, was truly an amazing and unforgettable experience. Jacob's interplay with the crowd (which was sometimes a rowdy one, it was Sat night and people were lively) was remarkable and uniquely interactive among the scores of live shows I've seen. His rendition of Going to Carolina in My Mind, improvised and unique to Charlotte's show (if I can take him at his word saying so), was simply stunning. I honestly believe this has contributed in a real way to what I hope is a lifelong love of musical performances I've tried to instill in my son. It is easily one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen, and I know I'll carry it as a special memory forever.

This is quite possibly the best show I've ever been to. Every iteration of each song was just wonderful and unique, the instrumentation was amazing. And my god the singing at the end was so much fun!

This was the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to too many concerts to count. The sound quality was impeccable, the musicianship was top notch, the lighting was mesmerising, the crowd interaction was supremely fun, and overall it was a profoundly entertaining and enjoyable experience. I literally can't give too much positive feedback!

Great performer, not so good venue

by Jux on 4/30/22Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

I have to day Jacob is the bomb, but this venue fell short for his stardom. Visibility was really scarce, to the point that some people had to stare at a black wall and just hear the concert. The smell of weed took the whole place (it wasn’t rated and I saw children). The show was delayed for 1 hour and 15 minutes. I traveled 3 hours for this and was a bit disappointed. Great thing is that Jacob is out of this world and made it worth it, but I will not go back to that venue again.
