About

Jacob Collier In Concert

Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.

But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.

By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.

Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.

After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.

    Spectacular!

by DatGRaff on 4/27/22House of Blues Houston - Houston

Wow. Jacob Collier is one of the coolest performers ever. I loved his interaction with his fans and how he incorporated them into the show. I also loved the jokes he would tell and how he would tell stories on how a song was made. Another reason why I loved the show was how he improvised a song he’s never played ever. Hope to see him again in concert again!

    Incredible

by Ashley on 4/27/22House of Blues Houston - Houston

My partner is a big Jacob Collier fan so I got tickets for him. I only knew one song so I thought I would have an ok time for the rest. It was incredible!!! I had so much fun and cannot wait to see him again. His crowd work and control is some of the best I’ve ever seen. The musicians he is touring with are so very talented and really brought the whole show together. Jacob is a force to be reckoned with on the stage. He is flying all over the place and jumping around to different instruments. He is clearly one of the greatest musicians of our time. His ability to “break the rules” of music we hear every day is so beautiful and makes for interesting and one of a kind music. He has made a fan for life in me and I cannot wait for his next projects!!!

    Excellent Show, mediocre sound

by AP on 4/25/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Jacob and his band were magnificent as expected. Unfortunately, the bass and the kick drum were mixed so loud and reverberant that they drowned out any mid-range intricacies. And if Jacob's music is anything it is intricate. For the first half of the show the piano was barely audible. Luckily, there were plenty of moments when Jacob played without bass and drums and his and his bandmates' work was able to shine. Favorite moment: The encore when the band huddles around the park bench and sings In my Room with accompanied only by a bass ukulele, percussion and melodica.

Jacob's genius and infectious joy are the center of the show, and his band and crew are nothing short of exceptional compliments to his talent and expression. A wonderful night! Mozart is alive!

by Jenn on 4/22/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

Jacob Collier is a one of a kind brilliance. He speaks a musical language that reaches beyond most musicians comprehension. But... at the same time, creates music that is refreshing and enjoyed by all. His personality on stage is endearing and comforting. There is light coming from his soul to the world. He is making amazing music that makes a difference to those who are present and open. Best concert I've attended in years.

One of the best experiences ever

by mertb on 4/18/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Wow... What a concert! It's unlike anything you've ever seen before. The level of talent and expertise on display here is out of this world. This kid is a prodigy, and the band he brought along is nothing less. I will tell my grandchildren that I was there in the beginning, long after Jacob unsurprisingly claims his place among the legends!

    Beyond Perfect

    by hayden on 4/5/22

Saw Jacob at the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. He did a solo piano and voice concert and it was the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen as a musician, with just his voice, his piano, a little bit of guitar, and the audience, he gave the feeling of an entire orchestra, will certainly be seeing him again the next time I get the chance.

    Simply the greatest

    by K. on 5/19/19Howard Theatre - Washington

Jacob Collier is simply the greatest musician of our generation. Difficult, if not impossible, to use the English language to describe my experience. I only urge anyone and everyone remotely interested in seeing him on this tour to get a ticket NOW. You will be glad you did.

    Brilliant and Lively!

by bigschuy on 12/20/17Benaroya Hall - Seattle

I had been a fan of Jacob for a while following him on YouTube before seeing him live. I didn't know what to expect given he is/was a one-man show at the time, but I was blown away! He brings so much energy and passion to the stage, there is never a dull moment, and his innovation in live performance is something everyone should witness for themselves. On top of that, he is a brilliant, new musician with fresh ideas, while still paying tribute to the old with his covers. Best concert I've been to hands down, 10/10.

The most genuine and excited artist I've ever seen perform. His music is amazing on the album, but so much better live because he's sucha good performer. You can't help but smile ridiculously and share his love and passion for music while watching. The best concert I've ever been to hands down.

Watching Jacob Collier perform made me truly appreciate being alive. He frolics in music onstage like a puppy in a puddle. The energy is crazy contagious, and his stage presence and musical sense draw you in whether you like it or not.

    Collier is the BEST!

by Anonymous on 10/8/16Howard Theatre - Washington

I'd been waiting years to see Jacob Collier in person. He did not disappoint. His is a talent to watch as I don't think there's anything he can't do. Also so blessed to be introduced to the music of Ghost Note. I had never heard of them before and they now have a new fan. If you have the chance, catch either of these groups. But mostly be able to say you show Jacob when he was on his first tour. He's gonna be around for a long time.

    Unexpected at every turn

by ChennyChenChen on 10/6/16Howard Theatre - Washington

I didn't know Ghost-Note/Mono Neon before this show and now I definitely know them. They freaking blew the roof off of the building, even made me forget at times that I originally came to see Jacob Collier. Their hour and a half set got me and the rest of the room jumping, and they were really funny, to boot. Jacob Collier then came in and delivered on everything I could have imagined. His show was absolutely mesmerizing, how he came in and orchestrated all of the loops and instruments and tech. And just when I thought the room was in for another hour and a half dance party, he was able to lower the vibe to an intimate, soulful, heartfelt, religious experience. He was able to enrapture the entire room with nothing but his own talents and the equipment on stage, and make us feel everything from driving adrenaline to sublime gratitude for what we were witnessing.
