About

Jacob Collier In Concert

Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.

But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.

By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.

Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.

After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.

Djesse Vol 4 North American Concert

by Juana Brown on 5/6/24Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre - Charlotte

All I can say is WOW. This concert was all that I dreamed of and more. I discovered Jacob Collier online during the COVID pandemic in 2020, and I had been dying to see a live concert. Jacob Collier is an amazing artist! He has the IT FACTOR. Jacob has stage presence, instrumental talent, and vocal talent. His musicians and singers were great as well. You could really tell that Jacob Collier enjoys what he does. He has a true passion for his work, and it shows in his performance. There was moments in the show where he spoke to the audience that made me feel like he treated us like family. He seems so humble. I wish I had the opportunity to meet him in person. There was even crowd participation! It was also great that he performed songs from his previous albums like “Moon River”, “Feel”, and “All I Need”. I was truly satisfied. I brought my husband with me, and he was familiar with Jacob Collier’s work beforehand and enjoyed it, but he said seeing him perform in person was 1000x better. He said that the songs he’s recorded doesn’t do his concerts an ounce of justice. It was a full experience! I would love to go to a Jacob Collier concert in Europe in the future. I give this concert a 10/10. I wish that I could redo this concert just to be blessed with his presence again. Jacob Collier is a complete BLESSING. I recommend anyone to experience his concert.

Jacob operates on a different plane

by David on 5/6/24Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre - Charlotte

For a musician that started as a recluse prodigy, Jacob has found his magic in front of a live audience. The energy never subsides. His interpretations live are as creative as his recorded ones, and this band simply cranks. This was an outdoor venue, which allowed the audience vocal parts to escape upward. I imagine the experience is even better in a smaller venue setting where the audience parts would be more present. Outstanding at every level and we’re trying to see which of his other US stops we should travel to.

    A “life-changing” experience!

by Alan K. on 5/6/24Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre - Charlotte

My review is in two parts, first about Jacob Collier! It’s hard to put in words what I experienced the other night, being part of the Jacob Collier performance. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the presence of such a musical genius. I’m a musician, but not even on the same planet as Jacob. He is definitely the future of music. As a performer, he excels on just about every instrument and as a composer, his music is heavenly. Secondly, about the venue. Even though I thought that the venue itself is lovely, I don’t enjoy the experience of being next to the guy that tries to sing along with Jacob, but twice as loud. Or the “wooooo” girls behind me. Or the guy in front of me that blocks my vision every time he would stand up to take a picture/video. I know that goes with the territory, but when you’re paying sometimes hundreds of dollars for enjoyable experience, rudeness is not acceptable. But alas, there really isn’t much that can done about that. Just venting. Sorry.

    Best concert ever!

by Beetle on 5/6/24Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre - Charlotte

Jacob Collier always puts on an incredible show. But he’s outdone himself on this Djesse Volume 4 Tour. The best concert I’ve ever been to. The Skyla Amphitheater is a cool venue.

    Unique and incredible experience

by Tanfil on 5/5/24Radio City Music Hall - New York

Jacob Collier's concert was a new and unique experience, he makes you feel part of a collective effort along with thousands of people creating live choirs during his presentation. He is an out of this world musician and creative mind, playing multiple instruments and singing in wide vocal ranges effortlessly, plus, Radio City being the venue, was definitely something special. This will be a night to remember for the rest of our lives, if you appreciate music it is highly recommended that you go to a Jacob's concert.

Worth traveling to see Jacob Collier

by Three from MD on 5/4/24The Met Presented by Highmark - Philadelphia

Jacob Collier is an artist that our teen introduced us to, and we became instant fans. We actually traveled to see his concert at The Met in Philadelphia. The venue was amazing, getting through security and ticket check was a breeze, and the escort to our seats was impeccable. We LOVED the concert! Jacob Collier and his musicians are all incredibly amazing. Even buying merchandise was super easy. We might travel to Philadelphia again to see a concert at The Met. It was 99% better than going to The Baltimore Arena in our state. We saw Queen there and the concert was amazing but everything about the venue and the event-staff sucked. We love you Jacob Collier!!!

Fantastic! Great venue. Very clean and well run. Could have used a couple more security check in stations, but not a big deal. Staff was very friendly. Acoustics were great!

by artone23 on 5/3/24The Met Presented by Highmark - Philadelphia

"J.C."Performance was perfect. Not too sure (with the unsurpassed vocals) super loud audio adds to the experience. The volume from the audience singing should give a clue... Didn't enjoy the opening guest Kimbra: good voice, terrible lyrics

A fun night to go singing with your friends!

by Ethan on 5/2/24The Met Presented by Highmark - Philadelphia

A fun night of singing, that swings between cute, tender, wild, and wholesome. Jacob pulls the audience into the show and brings such a unique experience. His band is completely stacked with talented musicians who put on a fantastic show together. Can’t wait to see him again.
