About

Foxing in Concert

Foxing formed in 2011 in St. Louis, at the crossroads where the intimate, heart-on-sleeve catharsis of emo and the expansive sonic scope of post-rock intersect. On the band's 2013 debut ‘The Albatross,' the group navigated a precarious balance between their elegant, piano-twinkled arrangements and the battle-scarred vocals of bassist Conor Murphy, whose elastic performances could veer from soothingly soulful to anguished in the span of a single line (When you hear him croak out the devastating chorus of "Rory" — "so why don't you love me back?" — you can practically feel the swollen ache in his Adam's apple).

That album catapulted Foxing to the frontlines of the early-2010s emo renaissance, landing them tours with fellow torchbearers like The Hotelier and Modern Baseball. Their sophomore 2015 release, ‘The Dealer,' upped the ante with more intensely personal revelations like "The Magdalene" (on which Murphy wrestles with his Catholic guilt) and "Indica" (written by guitarist Josh Coll about his traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan).

The album cracked the Top 5 on both Billboard's Heatseekers and Vinyl Albums charts, a telling indicator of Foxing's burgeoning appeal beyond the often-ghettoized world of emo. They would make good on that promise with their 2018 album, ‘Nearer My God,' their first since Coll's departure the previous year to pursue filmmaking (There's no hard feelings, though — Coll directed the interconnected videos for the album's singles).

Co-produced by Foxing guitarist Eric Hudson with former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla (who first contacted the band to offer support after their near-fatal van crash in 2016), ‘Nearer My God' sees Foxing trying on modern-R&B minimalism ("Slapstick"), anthemic synth-pop surges (the title track), and — why not — bagpipes ("Bastardizer") without sacrificing their tender, heartfelt essence.

As their musical ambitions have expanded, so too has the band itself: onstage, the nominal quartet have blossomed into a seven-piece, with additional keyboardists and horn players to give these songs the epic treatment they deserve.

The opening band was terrible. Not worth the $40.

by Walker on 3/5/24Summit - Denver

The opening band absolutely sucked. They had terrible stage presence and even worse music. The middle band and the headliner did alright but they had pretty bad stage presence.

    Foxing was a Magical Experience!

by Kristin on 3/2/24Summit - Denver

There is nothing that beats hearing The Albatross all the way through. Foxing was absolutely haunting live, as always. I have seen them a few times before but this show was very special. I just wish they had held it at a different venue as Summit is my least favorite place to see a show in Denver - especially after Soda Jerk sold out to Live Nation. I am happy to have been able to see Foxing play this album one last time and I look forward to seeing Smidley play soon!

    Phenomenal show!

by Foxing OG on 2/23/24The Observatory - Santa Ana

Having been at one of the shows on the Foxing 2014 tour, it was amazing to be able to see them again for the 10-year anniversary of The Albatross. Over those ten years, The Hotelier became one of my favorite bands in the world, so getting to see both of them was a dream come true!

    Foxing

by Robert Barnett on 2/12/24The Masquerade - Heaven - Atlanta

Foxing always puts on an incredible show and their music never disappoints. I love watching and hearing them use various instruments during concert as well. They all have a true talent that cannot be overlooked. Their guests, The Hotelier and Glitterer, also did an amazing job, and I have since become a bigger fan of them as well. I hope that none of these bands ever skip out on Atlanta when they start touring. I truly look forward to attending many more of their shows. Thank you to all of the bands for putting on an unforgettable show.

1st time seeing Foxing, great show!

by Allie on 12/7/22Madison Live! - Covington

Foxing puts on a great show. The lead singer is so animated and jumped in the crowd during the set, it was so fun. We called for an encore and it was a blast. This is more my boyfriend's fav band than mine but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Otherworldly experience: highly recommended

    by Toni on 8/25/22

A friend of mine was busy and wasn’t able to come to the show with his friends at The Pageant last year, so he let me have his ticket. It was my first show after COVID started to calm down. I’ll never forget the experience we had here. Conor Murphy has an amazing presence on the stage, doing things like dressing up in a beautiful outfit for the song 737 and playing a badass trumpet solo out of nowhere on Draw Down the Moon. Fantastic concert for a great album. I loved my time spent here and will never forget it. Thank you Foxing.
