About

Foxing in Concert

Foxing formed in 2011 in St. Louis, at the crossroads where the intimate, heart-on-sleeve catharsis of emo and the expansive sonic scope of post-rock intersect. On the band's 2013 debut ‘The Albatross,' the group navigated a precarious balance between their elegant, piano-twinkled arrangements and the battle-scarred vocals of bassist Conor Murphy, whose elastic performances could veer from soothingly soulful to anguished in the span of a single line (When you hear him croak out the devastating chorus of "Rory" — "so why don't you love me back?" — you can practically feel the swollen ache in his Adam's apple).

That album catapulted Foxing to the frontlines of the early-2010s emo renaissance, landing them tours with fellow torchbearers like The Hotelier and Modern Baseball. Their sophomore 2015 release, ‘The Dealer,' upped the ante with more intensely personal revelations like "The Magdalene" (on which Murphy wrestles with his Catholic guilt) and "Indica" (written by guitarist Josh Coll about his traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan).

The album cracked the Top 5 on both Billboard's Heatseekers and Vinyl Albums charts, a telling indicator of Foxing's burgeoning appeal beyond the often-ghettoized world of emo. They would make good on that promise with their 2018 album, ‘Nearer My God,' their first since Coll's departure the previous year to pursue filmmaking (There's no hard feelings, though — Coll directed the interconnected videos for the album's singles).

Co-produced by Foxing guitarist Eric Hudson with former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla (who first contacted the band to offer support after their near-fatal van crash in 2016), ‘Nearer My God' sees Foxing trying on modern-R&B minimalism ("Slapstick"), anthemic synth-pop surges (the title track), and — why not — bagpipes ("Bastardizer") without sacrificing their tender, heartfelt essence.

As their musical ambitions have expanded, so too has the band itself: onstage, the nominal quartet have blossomed into a seven-piece, with additional keyboardists and horn players to give these songs the epic treatment they deserve.

One of the best experiences of my life

by Soldier99 on 8/17/21The Pageant - St Louis

This was one of the coolest things I have ever been to. They were so good, and Conor absolutely killed it. The pageant did an excellent job of keeping people safe while still keeping things pretty free. I loved this concert and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in having an excellent experience and listening to fantastic music.

I’ve seen these guys about 10 times and seeing them in their hometown was amazing. They performed differently than I’ve ever seen them, including this year, and it was the best I’ve ever seen them do. Their energy was different than usual. awesome show

simply the best lighting I have ever seen, stage presence, meaning behind each song. This was the best band I have EVER seen and loved. I’ve gone to hundreds of shows and this was by far the most unforgettable.

    FOXING WAS AWESOME!!

by concertsmeluv on 5/30/18The Basement - Columbus

We seen these guys as a opener and loved them!! So we were excited to see them on their own. They were freaking awesome!! The venue is very intimate, so your right there with them. The air conditioning needed cranked up a bit, other than that, I will see these guys every chance I get!!

    Best time seeing them yet!

    by ericp92 on 5/30/18The Basement - Columbus

The energy of the crowd amplified the confidence of the band in a fantastic way. The crowd sang along to all of their old songs, and danced to the new ones, which sounded AMAZING and I'm eagerly waiting the album's release. Highlights: Conor calling out the crowd for being loud during the quiet acoustic set of opener Many Rooms Foxing giving mad love to Columbus all night as the favorite time they've played in the city, despite the intense heart and humidity in the Basement Microphone dropping on some dude's head, after which Conor gave him a kiss on the forehead Eric Hudson giving his guitar to the crowd at the end of their last song who surfed it around for a bit Having a dance party playing Cher after their last song because they didn't have enough songs to play an encore This is the third time I've seen them in Columbus and really hope they come back again soon, this is a must-see show in my opinion. They feed off energy of their fans so well, so don't hesitate to sing along loudly when you do see them!.
