Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

The seats were awesome. Could see almost the entire ice. Always an awesome experience to see the Pens live.

    Unbelievable

by Jay+Maggie on 2/28/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

There’s not a bad seat in the arena and the atmosphere is something you have to experience as a yinzer. Being a great team doesn’t hurt either

    Letang Bobblehead Nght

by JennyO on 2/25/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

PPG Paints is a great venue, the Pens won handily vs the Habs, Letang scored the first goal AND the last goal for a 4-1 victory. My granddaughter accompanied me, seats were pretty good and it was "no fees"week so we saved money. FIVE STARS indeed!

    SRO seats

by Rob on 2/23/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Insist on SRO seating at PPG Paints Arena. But difficult to find for most Penguin games.

    Jagr retirement ceremony

by Kelly Z on 2/21/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

I’m so glad I bought tickets to the Jagr retirement ceremony. It was very nice tribute to Jagr. I was so happy to see the Pens players from when Jagr played with the Pens. Great job organizing the event. I enjoyed seeing the videos, Jagr’s speeding tickets and information about his parents and girlfriend

Side displays need some control and direction.

by Woody on 2/21/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Overall the game and the venue were great with no problems getting inside the arena. The biggest problem and issues came with the items on display. For example, both the African Penguin event during the break between periods and the Jagr's trophy display appeared to be a free-for-all. No one seemed to wait in any lines and just pushed to the front. No one from the arena staff or the NHL took charge to orderly guide the fans through the displays. A few stanchions with someone in charge to direct the flow of fan traffic would've been perfect.

The ceremony was awesome the wasn’t so awesome

by Pensfan on 2/21/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

The ceremony was perfect was on my bucket list . Didn’t like the fact that every 5 mins had to get up because parents couldn’t control there kids getting up and missing out on the game. By far this was the worst ever not enjoying the game due to someone constantly getting up during the game . No respect to anyone . Those tickets were expensive as it was . I gave 5 stars for the ceremony

    What a great night!

by Romeo on 2/21/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

The Jagr celebration and the retirement was great! It helps when you're sitting center ice two rows from the ice. It was awesome to see some of the 1992 Stanley Cup champions again. It was also cool to see Jagr's 68 lifted to the rafters along with Lemieux and Briere.

    what a great time

by VikingLobo on 2/17/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

PPG Arena is really nice, pretty easy getting in and getting out. Easy to find seats, friendly staff and a very nice place to watch hockey. I wouldn't hesitate at all going back. Shame the game wasn't more competitive, but so fun nonetheless

    Disappointing

by Hannah on 2/17/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Normally never leave reviews for anything but I felt like this needed to be said. I had standing room only tickets for the first time and the ushers would stand too close to the top step where it impeded our view to the left side of the arena. The ushers could see us craning our necks to try to see but they continued to hold the sign there instead of backing up a little bit. Then they also would let the people waiting for puck stoppage to go down the steps to get in front of us where they would also impede our sight of the ice. As someone who frequents penguins games, I do not feel like I will buy more standing room tickets. I spent half the game watching from the screen which felt like a waste.

    Costs

by Janene on 2/17/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

Drinks are way to expensive. Especially the cost of a bottle of pop.
