GRACE JONES IN CONCERT:

When it comes to multi-hyphenate icons, legendary Jamaican performer Grace Jones stands alone. Singer, actress, model, fashion plate, Bond girl – Jones has done it all with a singular artistic vision that continues to mesmerize and enthrall as she enters her fifth decade as a performer. From her days as an androgynous disco diva to her reign as queen of the new wave and beyond, Jones has remained at the vanguard of music and fashion trends, collaborating with the best producers and designers from both fields to build a legacy of cutting-edge music and visual style that is unquestionably her own. At her incredible live performances Jones is known for stalking the stage with her signature scowl and striking severe poses in outré stagewear while she coos and purrs in her sultry contralto voice over rhythmically seductive classics like "Pull Up to the Bumper" and "I've Seen That Face Before." From the elaborate stage design to the multiple costume changes, Jones pulls out all the stops, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience that will make even the most casual fan a "Slave to the Rhythm."

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Grace Jones was born and raised in Spanish Town, Jamaica before moving to New York with her family at age 13. She was picked on in high school for her skinny frame, but at age 18 she signed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina and moved to Paris. After rising to the top of the city's fashion scene and appearing on the covers of Vogue and Elle, she signed to Island Records and released 1977's Portfolio, a collection of disco covers of Broadway classics like "Send in the Clowns" and "Tomorrow." Jones released two more disco albums in the late '70s, but by the early '80s she had moved on to the sounds of reggae and new wave. Her 1981 album Nightclubbing was a global success, cracking the Top 10 in five countries thanks to hits like "I've Seen That Face Before" and "Pull Up to the Bumper." In 1982 she released A One Man Show, a long-form music video collaboration with director Jean-Paul Goude that introduced her striking visual style to the MTV generation and earned her a Grammy nomination. Mainstream acting gigs followed, including a role opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 film Conan the Destroyer and a coveted Bond girl role in 1985's A View to Kill. Her chart success continued in the late '80s with the albums Slave to the Rhythm and Island Life, but by the '90s Jones was focused primarily on acting. She revived her music career after a nearly 20-year studio hiatus in 2008 with Hurricane, an acclaimed return to form produced by Ivor Guest. Since then Jones has continued to do what she does best: slay in concert with epic performances that live up to her outsized reputation.

Being a DIVA has it's limits

by RJDJ on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I love Grace Jones and all that she brings to a show, BUT....making us wait thru a terrible DJ set for 90 minutes to start is unreasonable. The show at the Fox Theater in Oakland was great once Grace hit the stage but I I must admit that the old girl is showing signs of her age and perhaps a toned down show maybe of her as a chanteuse would be a direction to go.

    Not good.

by Sondrita on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

My 3 friends and I grew up in the disco era and loved Grace Jones. We sadly walked out at 9:30pm without seeing her. I know musicians don't come out at 8pm sharp but when they are this late they usually list and offer a live performance opening act and not a Dj, who played an endless loop of the same track over and over and over. This was was deeply disappointing.

Other than being a little late Grace Jones was energetically magical it was my first Grace Jones concert and it was just perfect! The Fox is a beautiful theater with a wonderful staff. It was just a perfect evening and I cannot wait to go back to the Fox theater!

    Timing Is Everything

by Quick Silver on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

There used to be a thing called fashionably late. Now there should be a thing called disrespectfully late. the show was to start at 8pm. Ms. Jones did not appear onstage until 10pm. Show was done by 11:30. The show was good, not great, but good. This trend amongst some performers of being extremely late needs to end. Respect the fans and our time and the money we spend to see you.

One must see Grace at least once in a lifetime

by HoJo on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The DJ gave their all to warm us up. Grace Jones is not known for being punctual but when she arrives -she ARRIVES. She played her hits and added Amazing Grace with an audience sing-along. No one left disappointed for seeing her. She has amazing energy and show presence. Worth the ticket price and the queues. It was definitely sold out for a reason.

    Amazing Grace!

    by JT_SF on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

When someone you love & admire for the trajectory of their career, their consistency and talent can still pull it out at 74, fabulous as ever, it gives you hope for aging Gracefully….and in this case, fiercely. She sounded great (with a little strain) and she werk’d the stage, if a tiny bit less Hey acrobatic than past shows. I’m so glad I got to see her again. Such a treat and a great show by any measure

    Stellar, memorable, and magic

In true Diva fashion she kept us waiting for an hour but she didn’t disappoint and in no time we were charmed and spellbound.

    Spectacular!

by PL on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I never really leave reviews but Omigod what an incredible show. Hat and outfit change after every song. Hula hooping for like 7 minutes whilst singing for the encore. How is she 74?!

    Ok

by RobASFO on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Good setlist but clunky production. Grace looked and sounded fine, as did her band and back up singers but the banter behind the curtains between songs while she changed into numerous costumes could have been better executed. The opening act ( drag queen Juanita More! DJ'ing ) was entertaining but not for 2 hours worth. Concert over way past 11...kind of crazy considering the Fox Theatre is in a veritabke war zone.

2 hours until headliner -- let people know

by whygrace? on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

If you're not going to come on until TWO HOURS after the posted start time, get an opening band. 30 minutes of a dj would have been acceptable, but 90 minutes plus a 30 minute "intermission" left me so annoyed I did not enjoy the show. One star for the whole evening, four stars for Ms. Jones who did put on a good show.

Grace FANTASTIC - Techno opener not so much

by Grace fan on 9/26/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

That was the worst opening act experience I've ever had. Techo drum machine for 2 HOURS while we waited for Grace to start. Even with earplugs it was headache inducing. Once Grace started she was fantastic. Costume change for each song. Queen.

    Worth the Wait?

    by Michael94501 on 9/26/22

Did show start at 8 pm? However some lady came out and played house music for 1.5 hours then Grace Jones came out at 10 pm, It's not funny, it's not ICON, it's just rude to make people wait 2 hours. So 4 out of 5 stars....she was amazing, high energy for a 74 year old. Runny around, she was walking pop art, you got dinner & a movie! Amazing and glad I got to see this ICON. Next time I know to also show up 2 hours later .

Overall the show itself was great!

    by DH3 on 9/26/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

Grace Jones is an Icon! The show was great, she was full of so much energy and life. I loved every moment of it. Grace did keep us waiting 2hrs but once she hit the stage it was so worth the wait, that's the only reason why I gave it a 4 star instead of 5!

by MCDubs on 9/25/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

She's a total icon that is for sure! It's worth it to go for just that reason. The crowd is super fun, really engaged and I would expect that at each show!

    Grace Jones

by Jules on 9/25/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

The concert was memorable and featured the Epic Grace Jones didn’t disappoint. Each number was followed with an iconic costume/ prop change with energy and intention! The crowd fans didn’t did fail to dress as they pleased to induce the era of music with fashion! No opening band but a Dj was present to spin early Disco Classics to energize the crowds into a frenzy before Diva Grace Entered the stage with a 90 minute delay before the 2 1/2 hr concert was performed to equal our images of the incomparable Grace Jones. Applause to Ms Grace for her energy and ability to not disappoint.

    GRACE JONES - her MAJESTY!

by CulChaLova on 9/25/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

INCREDIBLE performance, cunning, sexy, sassy, daring, - she schooled the children for the entire set. She was stunning and powerful, and funny too! No one sat down, we stood up the whole time. It was unforgettable. The costume changes were FIERCE. Every change was another iconic image of her. So glad we got to witness her live. And the woman doesn't age! She just swells with royal magnificence. ICON. PS - Moore Theater or Ticketmaster charged us twice for parking - which was rude. UNLESS the rest goes to the artist, then all good.

    Any words would be inadequate

by izzyizzyahh on 9/25/22Moore Theatre - Seattle

Amazing show by an amazing performer. She was nearly 2 hours late, but the minute she appeared all was forgiven. To say she rocked the house would be an understatement. These current singers should take note.
