About

This is OKLAHOMA! as youve never seen or heard it beforereimagined for the 21st century and the Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Musical. Direct from an acclaimed run on Broadway comes an OKLAHOMA! that looks and sounds like America today. The Daily Beast raves Forget your traditional idea of Oklahoma!. Daniel Fishs daring, utterly absorbing re-interpretation is differentbrilliantly so. OKLAHOMA! tells a story of a community banding together against an outsider, and the frontier life that shaped America. Upending the sunny romance of a farmer and a cowpoke, this production lets us experience Rodgers and Hammersteins greatness anew.(The New Yorker). Without changing a word of text, this visionary production allows the classic musical and our country to be seen in a whole new light.

NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING, BUT...

    by TT77 on 2/11/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I'm going to keep this simple, because if I dont, this would be the LONGEST review ever written. The talent on stage was excellent. The production quality (sound, lighting) was top-notch. The play was, well...rewritten in many ways, and it derailed from the original tone and vibe of the 'Oklahoma' that many have come to know. Some people like classics being reimagined and changed. I don't. Call me old-fashioned, but when I decide to see a show, especially one that I'm familar with, I'd prefer to get what I paid for when I laid out a hefty amount of money to see it. I mean, who changes the ending? Beyond that, I also didn't realize I was paying for a performance overloaded with blatant agenda-pushing. I was finding myself cringing in confusion multiple times as I watched the show...with my 12 year old, who kept looking at me for a reaction because even she knew that what was unfolding on the stage was down-right ridiculous and inappropriate. Every single part of this show, from the casting, to the rewritten screenplay, to the changed ending, was an obvious and annoying over-corrective response to the change in the social landscape over the last 8-10 years. Anyone can rewrite history, as it doesn't require much effort. I don't think 'Oklahoma', or any established work, is the right platform to do so. Don't take an American Classic and bastardize it to push your own agenda. If you want to get a message across, write your own story. At intermission, I didn't quite understand why there was a mass exodus from the theater. People weren't stepping out for a break. They were actually leaving. It all made sense 90 minutes later on my ride home. Just sayin'. I'm not going to give any specific details, so as to not spoil anything. I guess you'll have to see it for yourself. Ironically, my 'negative' review will probably fuel the success of this show, that some people might falsely still call 'Oklahoma'.

    Worst production

by Theatre Guru on 2/5/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Couldn’t hear any of the cast members, choreography was lack luster, and overall artistic approach was unsettling. Left at intermission. Ushers were talking so loud on their phones, and it compounded the to the frustration of the not being able to hear the actors. Felt like a bait and switch technique. This is not the traditional Oklahoma! 10/10 would not recommend to those looking for a true “Broadway Production”.

Overall good experience thanks to the actors and actresses

by RedTail on 1/28/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

Great experience with the theatre. Actors and actresses are very talented and did a great job. I am disappointed about the new creation. I was hoping to watch a classic and this is not the classic I was looking for. I was not a big fan of the setting, details of the storyline, stage, dresses, and art style. Was not looking forward to any modern art yet I got plenty.

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SKIP THIS ONE

    by W. H. on 1/26/22

As other reviewers have stated, this re-imagined telling of Oklahoma misses the mark big time. If you like the music, just imagine the actors singing the biggest songs while covered in blood. That literally happens. I understand art is always subjective, but this was a big stinker and I was very disappointed that I didn't get to see what I paid for. I never write reviews. I had to break the mold for this one.

    new not better

by okdenn on 1/26/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

New is not always better. The original play had a much better feeling of excitement. This play seemed so flat. Some of the songs saved it from being a really poor play.

    Surprise

by Carol on 1/26/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

The update went really dark. It was a bit shocking and difficult to describe. The cast seemed flat. Not what expected.

    I hate Oklahoma

by KRae on 1/26/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I’m 30 - I find golden age musicals boring and not relatable. Enter: Oklahoma revival. The music is better, the story makes more sense and I SOAKED in the beauty of the cast and director’s interpretation of an incredibly relatable story. Gorgeous. Simply Gorgeous.

    Amateurish

by Jay on 1/26/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

I can get behind the dark reinterpretation of the play. Interesting idea. But the performance was unpolished. Twice there was a stagehand on stage , adjusting or removing a prop during dialogue (really!). There were long pauses where it seemed like people didn’t know their lines (which might be the director’s fault instead). The Dream Ballet was nonsense. 10 minutes if I-don’t-know-why-I’m-watching-this. There were no microphones, and not everyone projected well. A lot of action was at the extreme right of the stage, so nobody seated on the right could see it. 10 seconds of silence while characters stare at something you can’t see is just frustrating. I do not recommend. For this to have won a Tony, the performance must have been a whole lot cleaner.

    Terrible revival

by Chris on 1/26/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

It felt like a read through it rehearsal with the actors all just sitting at tables saying their lines. Was waiting for a little song and dance and scenery changes. Also there was no central message I gleamed from this twisted ending and portrayal of characters. Not one character was likeable.

    Re-interpreted Revival Missed the Mark

by Disappointed Fan on 1/25/22CIBC Theatre - Chicago

This show lacked the historical charm of the original production. We missed the dancing. The tone was very dark. With all of the tough stuff going on in our world right now, we were looking for optimistic, hopeful escapism.
