About

New York City. 1863. The Civil War raged on. An extraordinary thing occurred amid the dangerous streets and crumbling tenement houses of the Five Points, the notorious 19th-century Lower Manhattan slum. Irish immigrants escaping the devastation of the Great Famine settled alongside free-born Black Americans and those who escaped slavery, arriving by means of the Underground Railroad. The Irish, relegated at that time to the lowest rung of America’s social status, received a sympathetic welcome from their Black neighbors (who enjoyed only slightly better treatment in the burgeoning industrial-era city). The two communities co-existed, intermarried, raised families, and shared their cultures in this unlikeliest of neighborhoods.

The amalgamation between the communities took its most exuberant form with raucous dance contests on the floors of the neighborhood bars and dance halls. It is here in the Five Points where tap dancing was born, as Irish step dancing joyously competed with Black American Juba.

But this racial equilibrium would come to a sharp and brutal end when President Lincoln’s need to institute the first Federal Draft to support the Union Army would incite the deadly NY Draft Riots of July 1863.

Within this galvanizing story of racial harmony undone by a country at war with itself, we meet the denizens of a local saloon called Paradise Square: the indomitable Black woman who owns it; her Irish-Catholic sister-in-law and her Black minister husband; a conflicted newly arrived Irish immigrant; a fearless freedom seeker; an anti-abolitionist political boss, and a penniless songwriter trying to capture it all. They have conflicting notions of what it means to be an American while living through one of the most tumultuous eras in our country’s history.

    Fantastic Evening.

    by Beardad44 on 12/7/21James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

So great to just be back in the theatre. So great to just be back in the theater again. The sets, costumes & choreography and lighting are amazing. The show is perfectly cast. Couple of spots in shell need a little tightening up. The number Let it Burn will bring you to tears. Joaquina Kulakonga can clear a space for her Tony award now. Can’t wait to go to New York City and see the finished product. Thank you Garth Drabinsky for a well-thought-out show!!

    Great evening at the Theater

by Arnie G on 12/6/21James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

After 18 months of no theater our trip to down town was a refreshing and exciting evening. The performence of Paradise Square was a wonderful experience after so many months without live performences. The signing dancing were outstanding as was the entire cast. while there was a breakdown of the scenary, it did not deter from the production quality. I hope this show is shared by many as the topic is very pertinent to the political landscape today Thank you for a great performence and best of luck on Broadway

    Amazing New Show!

by geshelgirl on 12/6/21James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

We absolutely loved the performance of Paradise Square. The cast is stuffed full with incredible talent. So many strong voices singing beautiful and fun songs. This highlighted a period in history that we were not familiar with and really brought it to life. The theater is absolutely gorgeous too! We had seats in Orchestra Row P and had a wonderful view of all the action. We would highly recommend it!

by JASI on 12/6/21James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The dancing was inspiring, the lead actress was out of this world talented, what an amazing and powerful voice, and a message based on true history that is still so appropriate today.

    Could be better

by Sam on 12/4/21James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The show was good, especially singing and dancing. But way too many themes and show needs drastic editing before opening in NYC. My Ticket master experience was marred; I bought parking, but there was no coupon or barcode for it and had to pay for parking on top of what I had already paid.
