About

Marcus King faces heartache, addiction, and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice, and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels. The GRAMMY® nominated fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, started playing guitar at 8-years-old following in the footsteps of his guitarist Father and Grandpa. Logging thousands of miles on the road as "The Marcus King Band," he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Americana Album." Between headlining venues, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more. He has launched various mental health initiatives, including a guitar auction collaboration with MusiCares. Now, his 2024 album Mood Swings feels like the moment of baptism when water washes away a life's worth of sins and degradation and all that's left is a revived, yet still real-as-hell primal scream. It's as if King strained raw soul straight from his gut up through that broken heart and on to the record under the watchful eye of Rick Rubin. Emphasizing his vocals front-and-center more than ever before, the trusty guitar he's so often associated with plays the sideman this time around (though there's no shortage of impressive shredding). For as dark as everything seemed, you can't help but feel a sense of hope in the power of Marcus's voice.

    Great music, muddy vocals

by AlwasSouthbound on 10/14/22The Masonic - San Francisco

Both opener Russ Francis Band and main act Marcus King Band were great…but the vocals for both bands were very muddy.

Could have been great… wish I could have stayed

by Grace on 10/14/22The Masonic - San Francisco

We bought tickets for a concert on a Tuesday night. That concert was supposed to start at 7pm. The opener didn’t start until almost 8pm and the Marcus King band didn’t start until after 9pm. We have a family and kids. I was heartbroken to only see 30 mins of the headliner before we had to leave and pick up kids from a babysitter on a school night. I was at the venue for over 3 hours and saw 30 mins of the performer who’s tickets I purchased. This wasn’t a Friday night show. 7pm show didn’t start until after 9pm. How am I supposed to plan for that??? The 30 mins we were able to see were amazing. Marcus King is wildly talented.

    Marcus King amazing....sound mix awful

by Ivan on 10/12/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Marcus King was fantastic but the sound mix was awful....especially in the mezzanine. I am shocked that an artist with this high a calibre would have such a poor sound team.

    Great artist, average venue

by cm3rph on 10/11/22House of Blues San Diego - San Diego

Lots of issues getting into the show. Very strict bag restrictions and seems like security was applying the policy inconsistently. We were told my wife's purse was OK but then another guest who was prohibited from entering based on bag size complained so we got pulled back out of the venue and made to wait while a manager eventually let us all in. It was a pretty full house and we arrived late so our view to the stage was poor. I tried a few different areas but never found anything decent. The volume was too low, also. The bartenders were good and we didn't have to wait too long for a drink. Marcus was amazing but the other issues definitely impacted the overall experience.

    Bad acoustics

by John M on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

I love Marcus King and have seen him multiple times. However, the Wiltern Theatre has horrible acoustics and bad lighting. When Marcus was talking between songs you could not understand what he was saying, and if you did not already know the lyrics it was hard to tell what he was singing. How about putting a spot light on the performer who is doing a solo? I noticed the same problems at the Allman Family Reunion show several months ago at this venue

    The Wiltern

by Dana on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

the music was fantastic but I have to say that the staff doing the doors and parking needed to be a little more informed as to what was going on. LA is very congested with very little parking. We paid for preferred parking and no one knew anything about it. The VIP parking was not labeled so everyone was going into a parking garage next to the Wiltern and the attendants were clueless to the concert or where the correct parking was. I finally got out and asked some people from the venue and they really didn't have solid information. It ended up OK but could have went a lot smoother with more information

Bands were all awesome! Venue sound, not so much.

by Kirrby on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

All the bands that played were amazing. We really enjoyed the music as well as all the staff. From the bartenders to the staff checking IDs to security; everyone was very polite and respectful. When it came time for The Marcus King Band my wife and I left halfway through the set because the sound was so bad. We could barely hear his voice, the main reason we made the trek downtown. We were seated in the Loge on a far corner, so maybe it was a poor seating choice on our part, but we heard the first two bands just fine. Maybe a one-off experience, but a bit disappointing, nonetheless.

Wiltern Needs to Police Smoking Better

by DontSmoke on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Guys, it’s 2022. Stop smoking during the show. It’s prohibited, but for some reason the Wiltern security closed the eyes on their own policies. It’s not ok, it’s disrespectful and harmful to the health of others. Coughing on somebody’s smoke was the worst part of the otherwise fine show.

    Fire the sound guy

by CB on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Muffled, distorted over saturated sound meant you couldn’t hear the music. It was loud noise, not Marcus King

    Great performance and venue

by LA Native on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The Marcus King Band always put in a great show. The Wiltern is iconic venue, that is gorgeous inside. Plenty of bars with very little wait. I can’t say the same about the restrooms.

    I think I've gone deaf

by Don't Give A Hoot Gibson on 10/10/22The Wiltern - Los Angeles

It was just impossible loud. In Spinal Tap terms, it was a 12. Assaultive, unintelligible. I stayed for three numbers hoping that whomever they had on the sound board would get it under control but they didn't. So I left. Very disappointing. Will give The Wiltern one more try with The Allman Family in December. All indoor venues should consult with The Meridian in Toronto where they do a brilliant job.

    True Entertainer!

by Kris on 10/9/22The Van Buren - Phoenix

3rd time to see Marcus. He just keeps getting better and more professional, if that is possible. Gets the audience involved and keeps the high energy going! So talented on guitar and his voice is so dimensional. Its a fabulous combination! Loved the addition of horns and his band members are extraordinary as well. Always a great show!

    Can Never Get Enough

    by J. C. on 10/5/22Tabernacle - Atlanta

We’ve seen The Marcus King band in Atlanta, Greenville, Athens, and Chattanooga. His crew never disappoints! You should also check out some of his band mates, The Shady Recruits, in their side gig. They usually play an after party in some cities. Marcus’s voice hits you right in the soul. His band is incredible.

    Talented Frustrating

by Caleb on 10/5/22Tabernacle - Atlanta

Marcus and his openers were vary clearly talented. They preformed well other than some occasionally too long solos. The biggest thing that upset me was the audio. You could not hear the singer for the 2nd opener or the Marcus King Band. It was so frustrating hearing they tune of your favorite song and not hearing the voice of the singer. Big audio check fail!

    Best Venue!

    by E on 10/4/22Tabernacle - Atlanta

Marcus King is always an absolute smoke show! But the Tabernacle was the best choice in venue. It has history and an intercity spunk that you cant find anywhere else. Big colored paned windows that danced to his songs.

    Awesome

by PVCTLH on 10/4/22Tabernacle - Atlanta

Firstly, if you have a performer you want to see and they are appearing at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, it's a must see. The Tabernacle in Atlanta is a classic Performing arts venue that is well run and has top notch employees. The Marcus King Band was incredible. The last performer of his caliber that i was lucky to see in a similar venu was SRV. It was a gift to see the man, his band and his friends. The King Band choice of touring with opening acts Neil Francis and Ashland Craft was Tops. Marcus king on the Young Blood tour is one of the best tours of the decade in my book..check them out..se what you think.
