About

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

Sound system in the Civic Center is horrible

by ROCKY on 4/29/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

You can't understand the words. Horrible. Rent , great play, i already know what its about. My friend had no idea, couldn't understand the actors. I'm sure the Actors were excellent but couldn't understand them. My Fair lady, beautiful voices , couldn't understand the dialogue. Book of Mormon, the same. Teresa Caputo was great but she came out into the audience. I amno longer buying any more tickets for the Civic Center and at least 10 of my friends feel the same way.

    Glorious and unreal

by E. P. on 4/29/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Rent came out when I was in middle school, and I guess I was a huge rent head but at the time didnt know that was a thing. This was my first time seeing it on stage, and the production was everything you´d wish for. There was electricity in the air the entire time, and that included in the audience. Iĺl never forget it, thank you to the cast and creative team, and thank you Jonathan Larson.

Awoooooo tonight! Awesome farewell tour! Great venue, good sound. Staff was very friendly. Unfortunately we sat above a very annoying & entitled person. Otherwise it would have been a perfect night.

    Least favorite production

by Rent Fan on 4/27/22San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

This was my 4th time experiencing Rent on stage. This was my least favorite production. Don’t get me wrong. Rent is my favorite musical and I know it well. I still enjoyed hearing and seeing it as well as singing along. I believe the direction could’ve been better. I took my 13 year old daughter to see it for the first time and she couldn’t follow the story at all. If I didn’t know it so we’ll, I would’ve had more difficulty. There was too much happening on stage at the same time and little direction on where the audience was supposed to focus. Many times we were unable to know who was talking or singing because there were so many people on stage with no spotlights on where to look. The actor who played Roger was almost always a half beat behind on every song and I’m unsure if it was a sound issue or him. We had fun but we’re a bit disappointed in the production. Until it tours again…

    Entertaining, good music, thoughtful.

by Kathleen P on 4/26/22San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

First time seeing this production and first time in this theater. Great experience and hope to visit again. The volume was very loud which made it hard to hear the words. Overall a great production sorry to see it is on the last tour.
