ARLO GUTHRIE IN CONCERT:
Folk singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie always puts smiles on fansí faces with the stirring performances and friendly demeanor he brings to the stage. Crooning and strumming his signature ballads and protest tunes, this folk revival legend invites audiences to sing along to favorites like ìComing into Los Angelesî, ìThe Motorcycle Songî, and ìCity of New Orleansî. As Guthrie recaptures the enthusiastic energy and zest for social justice that made him a standout at the first Woodstock Festival, ticket buyers will find themselves swept up in the emotional pull of his touching songs. Guthrie is a captivating story teller, and audiences will be rolling in the aisles as he regales them with humorous anecdotes about the Summer of Love and his famous father Woody Guthrie. But even if fans are just there to hear one of the ë60s most famous folk troubadours perform his classic tunes, Arlo Guthrie is sure to delight.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The son of renowned folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo was raised to spread a message of social consciousness through his music. Growing up in Brooklyn, the younger Guthrie became deeply involved in Greenwich Villageís early ë60s folk scene, befriending luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Rambliní Jack Elliot. Just two years out of high school he released 1967's ìAliceís Restaurant Massacreî, a humorous talking blues track that satirized the Vietnam Draft. The songís popularity lead to an appearance during the first day of Woodstock í69, forever linking him to the countercultural movements that the festival espoused. Though heíll always be remembered for lending his voice to humanitarian causes, he also enjoyed a respectable comedic acting career well into the ë90s. These days, Arlo Guthrie still tours frequently so that friends far and wide can enjoy his riveting protest tunes and sidesplitting stories about the good old days.

I have listened to Arlo since I was a teenager but had never seen him live. He was absolutely fabulous...just as good a comedian as a musician...maybe better. I just don't know what is going to happen once people like Arlo are gone.
We loved the show, brought back memories of past times.
I saw Arlo in Newport and at Woodstock and was excited to get to see him again in St. Paul, MN. His concert was well worth the wait. He played a variety of songs (his, his dad's and those of other artists). I was waiting for Alice's Restaurant, but it never showed.... However he did play another story/song about Joseph and his brothers that was almost as good. Throughout the night he interacted with the crowd which was nice. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would go again.
He's smart, he's funny, and he's extremely talented. I've seen him every time that he's come to the Twin Cities over the past twenty plus years, and I thought last night's concert was the best ever. He played some of his old "stuff" (Chillin' of the Evening is still one of my favorites). He played some "old time" music and, of course, some of his dad's music. His stories, as always, were incredible. The Fitzgerald was a great venue, and the concert felt very intimate. A great night!
Arlo was just what I hoped for and expected. My kids got me tickets for my birthday and a great thing they did. He is an entertainer / performer that did not let us down. I recommend him to one and all. He had the whole place laughing and cheering
Great music and fun stories. A good time was had by all. Nice venue to see a concert. Hard to believe Woodstock was 40 years ago. Lots of white pony tails in the theater. One fan had his Woodstock album with him for Arlo to autograph.
Arlo Guthrie is an amazing musician. It's just fun to watch a person play so well effortlessly. The first set was a mix of his music with that of folk and blues musicians from the past. The second set included songs from his Father Woody. My family grew up listening to Alices Restaurant every Thanksgiving without fail. Now it's hard to find on any station. This concert let me in on the fact Arlo is so much more. Go see this guy play!
I have not laughed that hard in I can't remember when!! Arlo is sure a GREAT story teller and I could relate to everything he was saying. The music was good and I got to sing along to a number of songs.
Arlo Guthrie is such a talented, entertaining man. My now 13 yr old son and I saw Arlo a few years back at an outdoor Amplitheatre. When tickets went on sale again he immediately asked if we could go again. this time he was at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Our seats were awesome and the small venue is perfect as it gives you the feel that you're at home in your living room listening to Arlo Guthrie with the familier voice and music that we all know. Arlo is a funny, captivating story teller who had the crowd laughing and singing along all throughout the evening. His first hand recollection of Woodstock was a priceless bit of history that is becoming rare to find. I'm so grateful we had the oppurtunity to hear his amusing story as well as the feel the culture. How many 13 yr olds have shook hands with someone who played at Woodstock?
While I usually enjoy the layered sounds of a full band, Arlo Guthrie did a great solo accoustic set. Perhaps the best harmonica playing I've ever heard form someone playing guitar at the same time, without the aid of hands to mold the harmonica's tone. A nice mix of Arlo classics, old blues and Woody tunes, and of course entertaining story telling. A short encore topped by a nice prayerful Woody lyric, which never had a tune until Arlo wrote one recently, possible title, "My Peace"; very touching.
Arlo Guthrie's concert was nothing short of fantastic. He always was and still is an amazing entertainer. He goes well beyond being an incredible musician and a terrific storyteller, too--he's the whole package! We would NOT miss going to another Arlo Guthrie concert.
Two long sets of songs intertwined with stories, Arlo himself captures the history of folk being the son of Woody Guthrie. The show demonstrated, in song, how the world has come full circle from the turn of the last century - war, hunger, unemployment, union fights . . . He paid tribute to the great folk song writers of the 20th century, playing their songs interspersed with his own. His stories were far from pedantic, as Arlo hs a unique perspective on life. His humor is so human and so infectious. Those of us who grew up in the 60's and 70's were treated to an homage to our teen age years. While the "young'uns" had a window into their parents' and grandparents' youth. A lovely, whistful experience.
Arlo Guthrie is a great musician, bringing forward tunes from the early 1900's to today. Full or grassroot American history, fun and stories he exudes enthusiasm for the real things in life, things that mean something over generations. It was a marvelous time for crowd study. His fans are all ages, all walks of life and hungry for something real. We laughed, remembered, dreamed and wondered. I would consider an annual pilgrimage to see/hear him. I know he has an amazing collection of people and music in his soul that he wants to share and I want to hear!!! I brought 2 teenage girls and they knew a few songs, clapped along and tasted alittle of what we old folks remember. Thank you for bringing him to us.
An excellent performance in a comfortable and intimate setting. Arlo is a seasoned and engaging performer who is surprisingly fresh and contemporary. He is both a story teller and a musician. His solo show is entirely acoustic and includes his two guitars, a harmonica and a grand piano. The audience was filled with aging hippies and middle aged folks who grew up on his songs and the folk music genre. He was great and very appreciated!
Arlo Guthrie still has the ability to crack everyone up at will. Yeah sure, The Motorcycle Song has done it for over 40 years, but his stories about Woodstock, his childhood, his father, and his travels make him a special minstrel...and the cat can sing and play! He entertained the Fitzgerald crowd for 2 complete sets. His energy level was a delight. It seemed there was never a dull moment and the crowd let him know how much he was appreciated throughout. You know how some concerts have a "slow" spot like most of today's movies? There was no "slow" spot last night. He was on a steady roll and never stumbled! Arlo is a great storyteller and folk singer. His dad was the same way 80 years ago. The genes help but the life experiences out-weigh papa's biological contribution. If you missed Arlo, you missed a great show!
My husband and I spent our 26th anniversary "re-living" memories of the 40s/50s/60s with Arlo Guthrie - it was great. Like most of the audience, Arlo seems to be "aging nicely" - still helping keep the spirit of his dad and many "old-time" folk/blues singers alive through their songs. He spoke quite a bit about his dad and his dad's musical "co-horts" - who, over the years, became Arlo's as well. Although the majority of the songs he sang were "new" to many of those in the audience, they were actually songs written and performed by his dad and others "back in the day". Of course, along with the songs, there were many wonderful stories told as only Arlo can tell them! With the 40th anniversary of Woodstock fast approaching, Arlo mentioned he has been getting lots of calls from reporters to tell of his memories of Woodstock - some of which he related to the audience in the way that only Arlo can! GREAT CONCERT!!
Amazing guitarist and songwriter! Beautiful person, beautiful sense of humor. A very good show.
As usual, Arlo's concert was exactly what I hoped it would be--great old songs, new songs, funny story telling and political. A terrific intimate venue. I left the concert smiling...
Arlo did all the songs I wanted to hear and then some, with the exception of "Alice's Restaurant"---we do know that that's a long one, so I can forgive it. His musicianship and story telling ablilties came shining through once again, and the audience loved him. It is always neat to see an audience of all generations, it is clear that Arlo is an icon and loved and revered by many!
