ARLO GUTHRIE IN CONCERT:

Folk singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie always puts smiles on fansí faces with the stirring performances and friendly demeanor he brings to the stage. Crooning and strumming his signature ballads and protest tunes, this folk revival legend invites audiences to sing along to favorites like ìComing into Los Angelesî, ìThe Motorcycle Songî, and ìCity of New Orleansî. As Guthrie recaptures the enthusiastic energy and zest for social justice that made him a standout at the first Woodstock Festival, ticket buyers will find themselves swept up in the emotional pull of his touching songs. Guthrie is a captivating story teller, and audiences will be rolling in the aisles as he regales them with humorous anecdotes about the Summer of Love and his famous father Woody Guthrie. But even if fans are just there to hear one of the ë60s most famous folk troubadours perform his classic tunes, Arlo Guthrie is sure to delight.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The son of renowned folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo was raised to spread a message of social consciousness through his music. Growing up in Brooklyn, the younger Guthrie became deeply involved in Greenwich Villageís early ë60s folk scene, befriending luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Rambliní Jack Elliot. Just two years out of high school he released 1967's ìAliceís Restaurant Massacreî, a humorous talking blues track that satirized the Vietnam Draft. The songís popularity lead to an appearance during the first day of Woodstock í69, forever linking him to the countercultural movements that the festival espoused. Though heíll always be remembered for lending his voice to humanitarian causes, he also enjoyed a respectable comedic acting career well into the ë90s. These days, Arlo Guthrie still tours frequently so that friends far and wide can enjoy his riveting protest tunes and sidesplitting stories about the good old days.

    Arlo Guthrie in Waukegan

by SteveinKankakee on 10/25/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

The venue was awesome. This was my first time to the Genesee Theatre, just amazing. The show with Arlo was very good. His entire family was there performing, which was quite impressive. His daughter Sarah Lee stole the show, her talent is exceptional. Had seen her and Johnny Irons perform in Kankakee in the "City of New Orleans" tour in 2005. Arlo sang mostly from his fathers songbook, but did include a few of his songs as well. Overall a very good time. Must also mention the Platinum package pre-event cocktail hour with horderves was absolutely the best, and highly recommended at the Genesee Theatre.

    Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seger

by Aprilfool on 7/29/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

I hadn't seen either performer for over 40 years and was 'shocked' that they had aged! I had come to accept my gray hair but not Arlo's ! How could that be? But it took only a few minutes to realize that time had only improved their talents. Granted, the hard edges and the passionate presentation of the message of the times were softened and I heard a wonderful banter about the journey they have taken to get to this day. They still have causes to champion but the sell is more heart touching. I absolutely loved being taken back to a time when real was what I wanted it to be and love was important to a lot of people and being politically correct wasn't even heard of, that we followed our consciences and our hearts and really stood up for what we believed in whatever small way we could.

    an old friend

by MESW on 7/29/09Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

I went to see Arlo with my daughter and a friend. We had an extra ticket which we shared with a stranger who became a friend if only for a night., She was an Arlo fan but had never seen him in a live performance. The best seat she could get was third balcony but instead sat with us in sixth row seat 4. We have seen Arlo many times so it was like seeing an old friend. He filled the stage with his guitars and piano and needed nothing else. He was great and his performance and stories brought back memories of seeing him from his Alice's Restaurant days to now. His voice was good and his delivery was excellect. We really enjoyed the show and look forward to the next time.

Arlo Guthrie puts on a great show!

by ArloFan on 7/23/09Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

Artlo Guthrie's show was a combination of music and commentary--which I think makes his shows so special. He played a selection of new and old songs, stopping from time to time to interject stories about his dad, his family and friends, his past experiences, etc. He played two sets and an encore, making the show well worth the price of the tickets. The Fitzgerald Theater is, of course, a great venue for all types of music.. All in all, a great evening of entertainment!

by annh on 7/23/09Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

This was the first time I have seen Arlo perform. It was a VERY welcome change from the "rock" concerts I usually attend. He was very relaxed and comfortable on stage. The stories between the songs were alot of fun; they made me understand and appreciate the songs more than just listening. Of course, no performer can please everyone in the audience and I just wish that "Alice's Restaurant" had been played. I guess I'll have to go to another performance !

    Another Arlo Night!

by dvid316 on 7/21/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

I've been going to see Arlo any time he comes anywhere near the area for so long now that It's like seeing a long time friend. The music is still clean and his voice is still the unique instrument it has been all along as he winds his way through the stories behind the songs and the inspiration for his writing. Saturday night he again took us on a trip back to those places we were all those years ago and yet helps us appreciate where we are now. I wish these nights could last longer and I look forward to more in the future. Thanks Arlo, hope to see you next year!

Arlo was, as usual, a fantastic entertainer

by boop54 on 7/21/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

From the moment I could see Arlo's white hair glowing in the black lights as he walked onto the unlit stage until the incredibly sad moment that he left after his encore I was happily entertained. Because I see him as often as I can when he comes to town, much of his show I know by heart, but he did throw in a few songs and stories that I hadn't heard before. I loved the fact that he recited his children's book, "Mooses Come Walking", a book that I bought for my grand- daughter a few years ago.

Arlo and Richie were a match made in heaven!

by rhiannion on 7/20/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

The weather was perfect for an outdoor concert. The support staff (everyone from the cart driver to the ushers were friendly and professional. We had seats under the pavillion near the back, but the view was unobstructed and fantastic. We could see all of the amazingly animated facial expressions of both Ritchie and Arlo. I will be back if not this current year, definitely next year! Thank You for making it possible to enjoy Arlo and Ritchie's music close to home, Rhiannion

    Arlo was good as always

by rosey1 on 7/20/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

It was amazing! Arlo Guthrie was his usual comic self. His music was pretty good also. Having Ritchie Havens as an openning act wasn't too shabby either.

    Ritchie and Arlo were outstanding!!

by 2tyedyehippies on 7/20/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

Ritchie Havens played first and was sooo smooth! It was like listening to smooth, creamy, melted chocolate! It was so great! His accompanist was no less amazing! The stories he told were enlightening. Arlo came on and was his usual self! Was really happy to see he played some of his classics and some stuff we hadn't heard in concert. The only disappointment was that Ritchie and Arlo did not play a song together. I am sure that would have been very memorable. Cain Park is a great place!

    Amazing as usual

by pmPilgrim on 7/19/09Fitzgerald Theater - St Paul

The Fitz (Garrison Keillor's home theater) is a wonderful place for a concert like this. Anywhere on the main floor is intimate and feels up-close and personal. I was not disappointed. The first bit of fun is naturally the crowd. A group that comes to see someone like Arlo has to be a little, well, different. Arlo has been around for over 40 years (which he loves to make fun of.) He goes back to an era that is better in memory than perhaps it was in person. He certainly gets into that in the concert, of course. There were those in the audience who were obviously hippies and former hippies, gray long-hairs and once gray and once long hair. Some of us even looked respectable. But you knew that under many of us was someone that would be surprised as we are that this is still going on, still attractive, still calling us from some depth of our past. There were probably a hundred different reasons for being there- memories, lost thoughts, or perhaps even fulfilled dreams. There were younger ones, too. Some looked perplexed at why a parent would want them to be there. Some looked out of place; others could have come from the 60s themselves. There some with canes and walkers and wheelchairs. There was one who looked like an escapee from a Z Z Top concert. But we were there for this 2 set solo show from someone as close to history as we can get. Arlo Guthrie. An almost magical name for many. Mystical. Arlo would probably cringe at that. But he represents something that hasn't died from those days. He represents the voice of hope and peace, the voice of protest and change, the voice of fun and grace. He has never beed the Big Star like Dylan, for example. But he has had something that Dylan never had- and never will. Personality and rapport with the audience. Dylan's a music god; Arlo is the musical everyman, one of us who appears as surprised as we would if we were there on stage after 40 years as he is. In that may be nostalgia. It may also be way of getting in touch with our own past and aging melding together into who we are today. But it is also a moment that maybe, just maybe, the world is a place where we can still have fun while also doing what needs to be done. Arlo is probably the consummate storyteller-songwriter. He blends them together so well we sat and waited for the stories with as much anticipation as the songs. If he hadn't stopped in the middle of This Land is Your Land we would have been just as disappointed as if he hadn't sung it. Likewise with the stories of remembering Leadbelly or searching for his grave in Lousiana or reminiscences of Woodstock along with modern stories of meeting Secret Service agents in an airport or his rambling about writing songs with a pen that catches them as they float by. I laughed more and deeper than I often do as his stories touched many funny places. Then there's his still plaintive voice. When he sings his father's songs you can hear the echoes of that unmatched voice. But it is still Arlo's voice - charming, haunting, carrying over the audience with a sense of simpatico as they say in Spanish. There's an aging to it, of course. It is edgier now, more down-to-earth than ever before. It has aged well. The late-teen young adult of Alice's Restaurant and others of the first 20-years is still there. That fun naive sound. But the world-smarts come through. He sings Leadbelly and we know he has grown into it. He is singing for us, in our name and for our sake. He gets the smile, a grin at a personal joke or the pleasure of just being there singing for us. That only makes his voice more graceful. A friend recently used the word grace to explain Arlo's popularity and presence. It was the word I had searched for over the years. It is the right word. I don't know how much of what Arlo shows is an act and how much is really him, the Arlo I would love to sit down and just spend time visiting with. (Arlo- if you are reading this, please note the request.) I can go on for a long time about Arlo. He still represents to me what many of us in our generation still hope and pray for. But he does it with the humility of one who knows that it is more important to do the small things that work for peace than for the big things that only a few can do. He reminds us that doing good is not an option and that we can and should have fun while we do it. And in the end, never take yourself too damn serious. Arlo- thanks. Don't lose it. We still need you.

Arlo and Richie - Closest to a Woodstock Reunion

by juliawarhol15 on 7/19/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

First off - DO NOT Google "Cain Park" for an address or directions. The Venue is the "Evans Amphitheatre" and there is NO parking lot, you have to find street parking in the residential neighborhood (which is limited) and walk to the amphitheatre. Locals are very friendly and helpful and on a nice night they are out walking everywhere. There is a free shuttle but I don't know where you grab it at. I never saw a sign for the Amphitheatre and all the signs for Cain park were for the park where people play tennis and kids swing or play. This is a great outdoor venue on a warm or cool summer night. IF you have lawn seats you can bring your own lawn chairs BUT you have to seat yourself behind the lawn ticket holders who don't have chairs so that they can see the show too. IF it rains it would be a bad night for you. The beer / concession stands are CA$H only... remember this! Even the CD sales, etc. are cash only. Richie Havens did a fantastic show, as always, and finished with his infamous high kick, as always. I've seen him play three times now and he never disappoints. He sat at the CD / poster table and greeted everyone in line individually who waited in line to see him. He signed hundreds of autographs. Arlo did a great job and told many of his fantastic childhood memories of hangin' out with Leadbelly and his memories of (or lack of) Woodstock in August 1969. I think he mentioned his dad, Woody, once but that was as I was waiting to see Richie so it was hard to hear him. IF you bring a camera they will confiscate it and hold it at the venue office. RIchie Havens allowed pictures with cell phones at the table only - NO STAGE SHOTS. Everyone respected this rule except one person I saw taking pics of Arlo on stage with their cell phone - tsk tsk.

beautiful night at a beautiful venue. Arlo's voice is as strong and clean as ever! He can really jam on that 12-string, but the concert was way too short, He didn't play very many songs and no Alice's Restaurant..... 2 performers, an intermission, all in 2hrs 40mins

    Arlo's still got it!

by caseyj on 7/19/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

He is just a gem...so funny...great showman-saw him 2 years in a row and the show is completely different. Can't leave without a huge smile on your face. He plays some old standards, but the unexpected things he comes up with are plenty fabulous! And the music ain't bad either. he played 2 different guitars, and the piano, and he rocks every one of them in every genre he hits. As he says-you just can't make this stuff up!

    Arlo was outstanding

by 60something on 7/19/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

What a great concert! Richie Havens opened for Arlo and produced truly amazing guitar work. Arlo's singing, playing and story telling made us wish we could sit there all night. He did a great job connecting with the audience. He sang several old favorites - Coming into Los Angeles, I Just Wanta Ride My Motorcycle - and also told stories about and sang tunes from his father. My only regret was that he didn't sing Alice's Restaurant. I'm sure the length of the song somewhat limits when he includes it in his performance, but we would've loved to hear him do it live. His reflections on Woodstock were priceless! I'd go back to see Arlo again in a minute!

    Brought back memories

by JasinB on 7/19/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

This was a two act set of headliners touring, in part, due to the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. First up was Richie Havens. He did some songs that he wrote as well as ones that others made famous. Of course he did Freedom/Motherless Child. His open corded strumming was precise and he has not lost a step. His stories were real interesting but he seemed to wander a little as he went through his set. The headliner was Arlo Guthrie. Now I have seen him a few times. By himself, with his band and with Pete Seeger. This was as good as he has ever been. He covered a wide variety of songs, particularly liking a couple of blues numbers. He of course did some famous ones including Motorcycle Song, Flying into Los Angeles and Train to New Orleans. The last one done on piano. He covered songs that he wrote, his father's and others including Leadbelly. His stories were not only very funny, but true to the history of the people and the times that he has lived through. He talked about the people he met through his father and about the travelling train show from Chicago to New Orleans to raise money for the Katrina Victims. I would highly recommend anyone see this show. Not only does it touch on the historical purpose these two fine performers stood for but how relevant they are still today. JB

    Richie Havens and Arlo Guthrie

by Dewo on 7/19/09Cain Park - Cleveland Heights

Richie Havens voice is still great, his guitar style unique and fantastic. His accompanist guitar was a perfect compliment. Truly a master. His stories were hard to hear, seemed too long, and confusing relevance. We would have just liked him to sing more. Arlo Guthrie was charming, musically fantastic, and very entertaining. On the whole, a very worthwhile event!
