ARLO GUTHRIE IN CONCERT:

Folk singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie always puts smiles on fansí faces with the stirring performances and friendly demeanor he brings to the stage. Crooning and strumming his signature ballads and protest tunes, this folk revival legend invites audiences to sing along to favorites like ìComing into Los Angelesî, ìThe Motorcycle Songî, and ìCity of New Orleansî. As Guthrie recaptures the enthusiastic energy and zest for social justice that made him a standout at the first Woodstock Festival, ticket buyers will find themselves swept up in the emotional pull of his touching songs. Guthrie is a captivating story teller, and audiences will be rolling in the aisles as he regales them with humorous anecdotes about the Summer of Love and his famous father Woody Guthrie. But even if fans are just there to hear one of the ë60s most famous folk troubadours perform his classic tunes, Arlo Guthrie is sure to delight.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The son of renowned folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo was raised to spread a message of social consciousness through his music. Growing up in Brooklyn, the younger Guthrie became deeply involved in Greenwich Villageís early ë60s folk scene, befriending luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Rambliní Jack Elliot. Just two years out of high school he released 1967's ìAliceís Restaurant Massacreî, a humorous talking blues track that satirized the Vietnam Draft. The songís popularity lead to an appearance during the first day of Woodstock í69, forever linking him to the countercultural movements that the festival espoused. Though heíll always be remembered for lending his voice to humanitarian causes, he also enjoyed a respectable comedic acting career well into the ë90s. These days, Arlo Guthrie still tours frequently so that friends far and wide can enjoy his riveting protest tunes and sidesplitting stories about the good old days.

    Disappointed

by RP on 2/17/20Carolina Theatre - Durham

One of the most disappointing concerts I've ever attended. Arlo performed for one hour. He did not appear engaged with the audience. Nothing more to say.

    Refreshing and entertaining

by C. D. on 10/2/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Our first time seeing this perennial artist and son of the great Woody Guthrie. A family friendly event, he was very entertaining and a fantastic storyteller as he led introductions into his songs. Of course, he performed his famous and hilarious Alice's Restaurant. His daughter, Sara Lee joined him. What a beautiful voice. We were pleasantly surprised how refreshing and enjoyable this concert was. The NJPAC is a beautiful facility and we in fact, got a ticket upgrade from 3rd tier to orchestra seats which was preceded by a phone call earlier in the week from an NJPAC staff person. It was a very nice gesture and WoW!, what and upgrade it was. Pleasant ushers and staff. No complaints here.

    Love Arlo!!

by M. E. on 10/2/19New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

If you love Arlo, don't miss this show! I saw it 4 years ago and again this past Sunday when he came around again. Arlo and his band just exude happiness, I smiled the whole way through. So refreshing to spend a couple hours with not a care in the world. This show did that for me.

    Absolutely Wonderful Event!

by DR RICK on 7/11/19State Theatre - Portland

I have enjoyed experiencing Arlo Guthrie on three occasions: The first in Underground Atlanta (1972); then in a Concert with Steve Martin just outside of Milwaukee; and, now here at the State Theater in Portland, Maine. Each event was unique; however, this latest experience was really extraordinary! I loved the music that brought back strong memories... I thoroughly enjoyed the new songs; and, especially the music of his Daughter. I was further pleased to see his son, active in the troop! This concert brought back so many wonderful experiences in my life. Just after hearing Arlo in Atlanta; I began my thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine). The transition from Student to Hiker, was made richer by his music! To then enjoy him in Wisconsin; and, in Portland; just continued my life-long joy of good music, great stories, and a vibrant audience! I am so happy I attended this event; and, I can't wait to hear his music again!

    Arlo is still Arlo

    by A. T. on 6/5/19State Theatre - Portland

The last time I saw Arlo we were both much younger. At that show, he declined to play Alice's Restaurant: he said 'go buy the album'. On this tour, Alice's is the center of the show, and is surrounded by other excellent music. His daughter, Sarah Lee, has a lovely voice and is a strong song writer as well, and his son, Abe plays a mean keyboard. It runs in the family.

    This was a great concert.

by Eliya on 6/5/19State Theatre - Portland

The venue was sold out, but it seemed intimate. Loved the stories told almost as much as the music. The group sang all the beloved songs, and his daughter was amazing. She did a set and her voice was brilliant

    A classic

    by C. D. on 6/5/19State Theatre - Portland

Arlo (and family) are such wonderful storytellers, songwriters, and performers. I love singing along with the classics, learning new songs, but especially the side stories! I wish they would return to Portland every year!

    Great show - horrible seats

by Kibaz on 6/5/19State Theatre - Portland

It was a fun show. Arlo was still has his sense of humor and still sounds the same. He sang some old classics including Alice's Restaurant (as it is that song's 50th anniversary). His daughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie has a beautiful voice and sang some songs on her own. We enjoyed the show greatly. However if you go to the State Theatre, avoid the seats in the first row of the balcony - the seats are not elevated enough to see across the walkway in front of them, over the rail separating the walkway from the next lower section, and the heads of the people sitting in the top row of seats in that section.. I had to stand to see the stage. A very poor design! Eventually I just sat, closed my eyes, and enjoyed the music.

    Nostalgic but not That Great

by Jean on 6/5/19State Theatre - Portland

Arlo’s voice has held up but in general the concert seemed tired. Aside from about five songs we remembered and sang along with, it was just ok. I wouldn’t go to see him again. Part of my reaction was because at one point he introduced his daughter then left the stage, so it became her concert, for way too long. She sang maybe 6-7 songs that were very country, and some were children’s songs, not at all what you expected to be listening to when seeing Arlo. So that was annoying as we came to see Arlo, not her.
