Arkells in Concert
Arkells hail from Hamilton, Ontario, the midsize industrial city located about an hour west of the bustling metropolis of Toronto. And from day one, they've flaunted their hometown pride en route to becoming one of Canada's most popular rock bands.
The quintet named themselves after the west-end Hamilton street where they lived as students attending McMaster University, and their 2008 debut album, ‘Jackson Square,' paid tribute to the namesake shopping mall located in the heart of the city. But most importantly, the Arkells actually sounded like Hamilton, embodying the city's gritty, working-class spirit in proletarian anthems — like "Oh, the Boss Is Coming!" — that betrayed the deep influence of fellow Ontario indie-rock rabble-rousers the Constantines.
After winning the Juno Award for New Group of the Year in 2010, the Arkells began to shed their steeltown skin and indie aesthetic. Max Kerman's impassioned vocals drove the soulful pop strut of "Leather Jacket" and the effervescent "Come to Light" (an open-freeway anthem in the mold of Don Henley's 1980s classic "Boys of Summer").
With 2016's ‘Morning Report,' they started taking notes from contemporary pop and hip-hop, resulting in the cheeky, gospelized R&B of "Drake's Dad" (whose video featured a cameo from Mr. Dennis Graham himself) and the brash, brass-knuckled single "Knocking at the Door" (The band's live setup has likewise expanded, incorporating a horn section and a chorus of female backing singers they dub the Arkettes).
But even as the Arkells racked up multiple Juno Awards and ascended to the ranks of bona fide arena rockers in Canada, they've never forgotten their Hamilton roots. They've supplied local Canadian Football League team the Ticats with their theme song, they continue to take an active role in endorsing local progressive politicians and urban transit initiatives, and Kerman and bassist Nick Dika have even opened their own sports bar downtown.
In June of 2018, the Arkells thanked their hometown by headlining their biggest concert to date, bringing more than 20,000 fans out to Hamilton's Tim Hortons Field for a gathering they dubbed The Rally. That sense of triumph has carried over to the subsequent album ‘Rally Cry,' whose gold-plated fusion of Springsteen-sized grandeur and modern-R&B groove shows that one of Canada's most beloved rock bands is ready to take on the world.

Straight up an incredible show. They pulled out all the stops. ❤️🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦
I was gifted these tickets day of after the original purchaser couldn’t go, and I didn’t know much of their music (maybe 2 songs). I LOVED EVERY SECOND!!! I got such a good vibe from the crowd and the band, and while we only saw the 2nd and 3rd openers, they were also very good!!! They’re now my entire summer playlist!!!!!!!
One of the best concerts I have ever attended - they put on a great show . Was sad I was unable to get merch though .. by the time I got to the merch booth they were sold out of pretty much everything as well as the other two booths I went to . :) oh well
Such good performers, best show I’ve ever been to. Love these guys
The show was awesome and you can get right up to the stage
Always a treat to watch bands play the House of Blues in Chicago. Especially bands who fill arenas back in Canada! Arkells brought the full stadium show to the HOB stage.
Immaculate vibes. Arkells were in top form at a beautiful venue with the best energy and such a good crowd!
The band had so much energy!! The venue was amazing. We have seen them before and this time was just as good. Lots of crowd work, the horns crushed it and had the best time!! The entire crowd was super into it too!!
Amazing concert. Parking was convenient and easy. Venue is outstanding.
Arkells take the stage with rocket assist in-place. They don't wind up and get rocking, they start from the word go and don't stop. They know how to work with the audience, get them involved, invested, and active. They are one of the best bands I've ever seen, and they sound fantastic live as well.
What a beautiful band to see in a small venue!! We travelled from Canada to see them and were so thrilled to get close to the stage. Definitely a favourite, great performance and energy as always.
The band is amazing. I only knew one song, but i went with my gf to spend time with her. It was the best decision i made that week. One of the best decisions ever
Arkells had everyone singing and dancing. Great times in a great venue.
I had heard that the Arkells sell out stadium shows in Canada. So when I had a chance to see them in a small venue, like Irving plaza, I was intrigued. They are phenomenal! They came out out of the gate swinging. From the first song to the last, they were super high energy and completely engaging. The band was tight and the lead singer was incomparable. The crowd had a great time! Can’t wait to see them again.
Arkells put on one of the best live shows out there today, Max absolutely brings it every night. Cannot recommend enough!
The atmosphere was so energy filled, we were giddy! So happy to kick-off concert season with the Arkells. Natural entertainers that keep the audience excited from beginning to end!
Arkells and Haviah Mighty were amazing! the reason for the 3-star review was the lax covid measures. Lots of people were not wearing masks during the concert - they were removing it to drink or eat but not putting it back on. There was nothing noticeably different in the seating - seemed like every seat and every row was occupied so there wasn't any distancing measures in place.
After not being able to leave the house for 16 months, getting to experience a LIVE concert was so invigorating. Seeing The Arkells was one of the best days of my summer! Max is charismstic, positive and full of energy! He sang the entire set without taking a break. The rest of the band was introduced by him as were the other members of the set. I got a long sleeve t-shirt for $40 which I thought was very reasonable. The food and drink at the Budweiser stage are extremely over priced (which is nothing new). I spent the night in Toronto which made for an all around fantastic getaway. Looking forward to going back to the Budweiser stage soon!
Amazing show, great opening act and the Arkells are one of the best bands to experience live. Always high energy and a different show every time you see them. Definitely one of the best live bands to experience.
First concert since the lockdown and it did not disappoint, awesome evening.
