About

Arkells in Concert

Arkells hail from Hamilton, Ontario, the midsize industrial city located about an hour west of the bustling metropolis of Toronto. And from day one, they've flaunted their hometown pride en route to becoming one of Canada's most popular rock bands.

The quintet named themselves after the west-end Hamilton street where they lived as students attending McMaster University, and their 2008 debut album, ‘Jackson Square,' paid tribute to the namesake shopping mall located in the heart of the city. But most importantly, the Arkells actually sounded like Hamilton, embodying the city's gritty, working-class spirit in proletarian anthems — like "Oh, the Boss Is Coming!" — that betrayed the deep influence of fellow Ontario indie-rock rabble-rousers the Constantines.

After winning the Juno Award for New Group of the Year in 2010, the Arkells began to shed their steeltown skin and indie aesthetic. Max Kerman's impassioned vocals drove the soulful pop strut of "Leather Jacket" and the effervescent "Come to Light" (an open-freeway anthem in the mold of Don Henley's 1980s classic "Boys of Summer").

With 2016's ‘Morning Report,' they started taking notes from contemporary pop and hip-hop, resulting in the cheeky, gospelized R&B of "Drake's Dad" (whose video featured a cameo from Mr. Dennis Graham himself) and the brash, brass-knuckled single "Knocking at the Door" (The band's live setup has likewise expanded, incorporating a horn section and a chorus of female backing singers they dub the Arkettes).

But even as the Arkells racked up multiple Juno Awards and ascended to the ranks of bona fide arena rockers in Canada, they've never forgotten their Hamilton roots. They've supplied local Canadian Football League team the Ticats with their theme song, they continue to take an active role in endorsing local progressive politicians and urban transit initiatives, and Kerman and bassist Nick Dika have even opened their own sports bar downtown.

In June of 2018, the Arkells thanked their hometown by headlining their biggest concert to date, bringing more than 20,000 fans out to Hamilton's Tim Hortons Field for a gathering they dubbed The Rally. That sense of triumph has carried over to the subsequent album ‘Rally Cry,' whose gold-plated fusion of Springsteen-sized grandeur and modern-R&B groove shows that one of Canada's most beloved rock bands is ready to take on the world.

  • Best Concert I have been too in a long time

by SunshineKC on 10/24/22Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was the best! Everyone was so respectful - no one pushing you into the barricades and the band was amazing!!

  • Awesome!

by Telo on 10/24/22Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Super fun and interactive, this band puts on an amazing show. I’ve seen them twice and would highly recommend.

  • Absolutely Amazing Evening

by Melissa on 10/23/22Canada Life Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I danced like I haven’t danced in years. Set list was bang-on, Max was on his game and the rest of guys were so entertaining. I’m still smiling and it’s been nearly a week.

  • Great Night!

by Joanna on 7/16/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen the Arkells 5 times and although, I like their music, I doubt I'll go and see them again. That said, I had a great time at the concert. It was great being outside on a nice summer's night enjoying good music with like-minded people.

  • Great concert but not very COVID conscious

by Rebecca on 7/5/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was amazing! The stage was well set up, the sound was booming so that I could hear the music properly, and everything started pretty much on time. My only complaint is the lack of planning around COVID. To keep myself and others safe, I was masked but almost everyone else at this concert, with hundreds if not thousands packed tightly together (regardless of if it was outside because being outside means nothing if you're crammed together), was not. As much as we would like to believe COVID is done, it is still here and I am concerned about how this concert could have essentially been a super spreader event and potentially even gotten the music acts themselves sick. I think asking concert goers to mask would have made a much safer environment for both the fans and the headliners.

  • Amazing show

Arkells never fail to put on an amazing show. Incredible energy and all around great time.

  • That's what I call a rally cry

by Sam on 6/30/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Arkells always put on a fun show! So much energy, an excellent setlist, and who could forget the free little towels?? It was my 10 year old niece's first concert and she loved every minute of it - she's already looking forward to next year's rally!

  • The best time always

  • Memorable show

by Aggie on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first rally show in Hamilton that I’ve seen, I have only heard great things about it and finally have gotten a chance to experience it. I’m a long time fan and have seen them play live many times and this was a fantastic show to have back in their hometown. I’m so happy I was there 😁

  • Absolutely AMAZING!

by Laura on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

This was only my second time seeing them, but the Arkells know how to throw a party! I love that they play for a great length of time, and end their shows with a super fun dance party. This show was nothing short of incredible. The openers were fantastic, and all the details of the rally (right down to the towels and hometown themed merch) were top notch. I can't wait for the next arkells concert we get to attend ❤️ lifelong fan here.

  • Inadequate water filling stations

by Carmela on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 1 out of 5

The show was great, the Arkells were amazing! The process to getting water is outrageous though. I feel like I walked around the entire venue multiple times to find places to fill my water bottle. Buying water is outrageous and the lines for foundations if you can find one is crazy. I wish this was more of a priority at these events.

  • AMAZING

by Aless on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

the show was postponed 2x due to covid. i waited so long just to experience Arkells let alone in their hometown and it was PHENOMENAL!!! they really know how to interact with the crowd and are so talented!! 10/10 would see them again

  • Amazing

by Jordan on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 4 out of 5

Arkells put on an amazing show. Was a beautiful night filled with tons of positive energy. All this 5/5. Only complaint, the sight lines from the stands was baaad. Unless they were on the catwalk, you couldn’t see much of the show or the screens. Stage design should have had some open sides to see in. Fortunately Max was outside most of the night and brought some friends out with him a few times otherwise it would have been rough.

  • Great night with my family

by Owsley on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert! I enjoyed every band that played. There was even a grateful dead cover! Tim Hortons field is a great concert venue. The Arkells are a class act! Would love to see this as an annual event.

  • Incredible

by Dave on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

The Arkells put on one of, if not the best, live shows. If you enjoy them on the radio, you’ll love the live show.

  • Great Concert!

by Sam on 6/29/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

After waiting for 2 years of postponements, The Rally finally happened and it was amazing!

  • Always a Great Time

by Stockhgr on 6/28/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve seen these guys six times now and it’s always a great show. Set list was great as usual and the atmosphere was amazing.

  • Always a blast

by NW on 6/28/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

The Arkells have never disappointed when it comes to putting on an energetic, entertaining show and The Rally was no different. I was at the first one, endured COVID setbacks to see the second, and will try my hardest to get tickets to the third. If you can see one Arkells show, I'd say see it, but this is the one you really want to be in the crowd for.

  • Fabulous concert

by LSmith on 6/28/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Such a cool venue, an incredible night with a stunning sunset…but the boys played an amazing show! It was such a fun crowd and a night filled with all the best Arkells music!

  • Absolutely Crushed It

by Stephen Gris on 6/28/22Tim Hortons Field - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been following these guys for 12 years now, and I have never once seen a show where they missed the mark. The set list this past weekend was killer, they brought fantastic energy, they had a full horns section and backup singers. These guys put on the big, crazy party you always hope a concert will be. I’d recommend them to anyone (so long as they want to have a good time!)
