Arkells in Concert
Arkells hail from Hamilton, Ontario, the midsize industrial city located about an hour west of the bustling metropolis of Toronto. And from day one, they've flaunted their hometown pride en route to becoming one of Canada's most popular rock bands.Ā
The quintet named themselves after the west-end Hamilton street where they lived as students attending McMaster University, and their 2008 debut album, āJackson Square,' paid tribute to the namesake shopping mall located in the heart of the city. But most importantly, the Arkells actually sounded like Hamilton, embodying the city's gritty, working-class spirit in proletarian anthems ā like "Oh, the Boss Is Coming!" ā that betrayed the deep influence of fellow Ontario indie-rock rabble-rousers the Constantines.Ā
After winning the Juno Award for New Group of the Year in 2010, the Arkells began to shed their steeltown skin and indie aesthetic. Max Kerman's impassioned vocals drove the soulful pop strut of "Leather Jacket" and the effervescent "Come to Light" (an open-freeway anthem in the mold of Don Henley's 1980s classic "Boys of Summer").Ā
With 2016's āMorning Report,' they started taking notes from contemporary pop and hip-hop, resulting in the cheeky, gospelized R&B of "Drake's Dad" (whose video featured a cameo from Mr. Dennis Graham himself) and the brash, brass-knuckled single "Knocking at the Door" (The band's live setup has likewise expanded, incorporating a horn section and a chorus of female backing singers they dub the Arkettes).Ā
But even as the Arkells racked up multiple Juno Awards and ascended to the ranks of bona fide arena rockers in Canada, they've never forgotten their Hamilton roots. They've supplied local Canadian Football League team the Ticats with their theme song, they continue to take an active role in endorsing local progressive politicians and urban transit initiatives, and Kerman and bassist Nick Dika have even opened their own sports bar downtown.Ā
In June of 2018, the Arkells thanked their hometown by headlining their biggest concert to date, bringing more than 20,000 fans out to Hamilton's Tim Hortons Field for a gathering they dubbed The Rally. That sense of triumph has carried over to the subsequent album āRally Cry,' whose gold-plated fusion of Springsteen-sized grandeur and modern-R&B groove shows that one of Canada's most beloved rock bands is ready to take on the world.

This was a first for me to see the Arkells and now Iām a fan. I loved the music loved his personality. He gave me the feeling as Gord did from Tragically Hip. He cares where he came from and never forgets his city. The show was uplifting and everything ran on schedule. Each band that played before the Arkells were also great. The venue couldnāt of been more well done.
Great day. Awesome band. Great weather. Great show.
The arkells- are the best Canadian touring band of all time! They give off so much positive energy that they are always leaving you craving more!! 8th time .. and canāt wait to see them again!
The Arkells put on a show. All the opening acts were great. Well done.
The show, venue, and acts were all fantastic. Arkells put on a great performance, playing all of their hits. Unfortunately, the acoustics in the 200s were terrible. Not sure if this was due to the windy gusts that day, but it was as if all the mids and highs kept cutting out. Very hard to enjoy the music (especially for the lesser known openers) with that much interference.
The entire experience was amazing!! The venue was staffed appropriately, the concession lines were quick moving & friendly, and the Arkells absolutely killed it!!!
Arkell's were great! The sound for Portugal the man was poor, and made their set not so enjoyable. Caught the last half of Valley, which was quite enjoyable.
Hi, I was just curious if the Portgual. The Man show was a one-off for opening band sound quality and kind of what they chose as a band to play with? The sound quality was horrible but I know outdoor venues are different than indoor and that openers do not use the full audio system at times to preserve revenue. They are awesome at other outdoor venues so I was just wondering! Would have also been nice to know their full band was not playing but a good experience overall and arkells were as expected!
