Arizona State Sun Devils at Sun Devil Stadium

The Arizona State Sun Devils are a perennially tough opponent known for fielding competitive teams. Coached since 2018 by Herm Edwards, the Sun Devils have won 14 bowl games and 17 conference titles. Arizona State plays in Sun Devil Stadium, which originally opened in 1958 and underwent a five-year renovation that was finished in August 2019. Among other things, the stadium, which now seats around 55,000 people, added a 5,000-square-foot beer garden and space for the Pat Tillman Veterans Center.

Arizona State Sun Devils Football History

Arizona State's football program dates back to 1896, when the university was called the Territorial Normal School. During their initial existence, the team was known as the Tempe Normals. Later, the squad played as the Arizona State Bulldogs from 1922 to 1946 until adopting the Sun Devils as a name. Arizona State was independent until joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931. The team later played in the Western Athletic Conference between 1962 and 1977 before joining current league home the Pac-10 (now known as the Pac-12) in 1978.

Arizona State's legacy as a football powerhouse was cemented thanks to head coach Frank Kush, a ferocious leader who guided the program to just one losing record between 1958 and 1979. Under his watch, the Sun Devils won five straight Western Athletic Conference championships and went undefeated in 1970 and 1975, the two years they also won national championships. During the Kush era, Arizona State also won four straight Fiesta Bowls between 1970 and 1973. Other notable head coaches include College Football Hall of Fame member Dan Devine, who led the team three very successful winning seasons just before Kush took over, and Dennis Erickson, who guided the team to a Pac-10 co-championship and a Holiday Bowl appearance in 2007.

The Sun Devils have produced dozens of NFL players and several Pro Football Hall of Famers, including running back John Henry Johnson, cornerback Mike Haynes and wide receiver Charley Taylor. College Football Hall of Famer Pat Tillman, who was killed during combat while serving in the U.S. Army, is also an alum. The Sun Devils have a century-plus rivalry with the Arizona Wildcats. Every year, the two teams meet in what's known as the Duel in the Desert for control over the Territorial Cup, which was first awarded in 1899.

    Sun Devils upset the Ducks

by Dan on 11/27/19Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Great experience with ASU football tickets and attending games. My family and I are from PA, but venture to Arizona once a year for homecoming. (Grandfather was a Quarterback in the 50’s). We love attending games. Especially when the Sun Devils win!! Great game, and an amazing environment to be a part of.

by Naya on 11/26/19Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

The price of the tickets for the football game was reasonable and it was easy to make the purchase on line. It was a great time at the ASU vs Oregon game since my team played their hearts out and got the victory. Go Devils!

    Arizona State vs Colorado

by AirborneVol on 9/24/19Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Sun Devil Stadium is very easy to get into and has great amenities. I have been a season ticket holder in the SEC for 25 years and have traveled to every SEC school for games and ASU was the easiest stadium to get into I have visited. The game was good, back and forth and the outcome was in doubt until very late in the 4th quarter. Overall, a great way to spend a Saturday night.

    Great game. Wrong outcome!

by Jim C on 9/24/19Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Took my son to his first Arizona State football game. Great seats, fun times, but ASU lost...that's not supposed to happen when we travel to AZ from SC! Overall we had a great time. Ticket process very easy. Truly the only bad experience was getting into the stadium. It took us over 30 minutes to get through the security line. Go early if you go to a game!

by ConcertLover35 on 11/6/18Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Attended my first football game experience in Tempe, AZ for this game it was very fun! ASU pulled the upset victory over ranked Utah, and it was a bright, sunny day with an electric atmosphere for homecoming. The stadium is renovated and very clean, and all of the local fans were very friendly. Fun time!

ASU vs MSU football game in Tempe, AZ

by Lolly123 on 9/11/18Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Ticketmaster - "Required" to use phone ticket barcode instead of a paper ticket. After waiting in line to get in the stadium for over a half hour, my Husband's phone wouldn't connect to the internet to load his bar code ticket. We kept trying for about another 20 minutes at the front of the line for it to connect and finally a guy just said "go in". I couldn't pull my Husbands tix up on my phone because of needing to "transfer" it to the actual ticket holder. There were others that had the same problem. Is this the future? The Event - The Game - Oversold student section? Students in our end zone seats, first told us they had the seats, we walked out and verified seating and confirmed it was correct. Kicked them out, they moved down and squeezed in front of us and stood for the game. Couldn't sit down to watch game and had to stand. Asked them to sit down and they said they couldn't. Frat boy showed me his ticket and said "they oversold the student section" so it pushed them into our section. Couldn't see anything, my friend stood on our bench, my Husband and I stood on floor in front of our seats and I still couldn't see anything. I wasn't about to stand on our bench for the game. By second quarter I just sat down and didn't watch anything besides stare at legs and listen to the game. Air was stagnant, no circulation. Frat boy had bad BO. The smell around was terrible. I kept feeling sick (dehydrated) and disgusted. Right before half time, a guy came to the Frat boys in front of us and told him they were in his seats. A fight broke out and people were being pushed back and forth and finally an older guy jumped in the middle and broke it up and told the students to leave because they didn't have those seats either. Then, a couple came to sit down next to my Husband on the bench below us and the Frat boys were in those seats. They argued with the boys and went to get Security. Security came and he acted like an Usher and compared tickets. He told the boys they needed to move. They just moved down a row, the couple moved in their bench area and the frat boys stood for the game in front of them. There were about 20 of these kids all over the place. By the second half my Husband said lets get out of here and we gladly said Yes. We left our seats. Walked up to mezzanine and needed water. My Husband left us to get water and we sat on a Vendor trailer hitch to wait for him. He was gone for over a half hour, I was getting worried about him or that he was lost somewhere and couldn't find us but finally he showed. Dave came back with 3 water bottles that were $6.00 per bottle and said he was in line all that time. Lines were excessive again and not enough vendors. After we had "warm $6 water", we left the game when half time was starting and walked for a mile to Mill street. Walked to pizza restaurant to eat and watch the rest of the game. One thing is for sure...I will NEVER go to PHX/ASU for another event again. It was horrible!!! Uuuuuuggggghhhhh!!!!

    Not a good venue

by Ankoin on 9/11/18Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

The stadium is mediocre at best. For a NCAA team it leave much to be desired. First thing, this is a HOT climate, use some sense in design for air movement and comfort. Seat are most uncomfortable and they still charge more than professional football. Large open concourse is good but there is no flow. Also, entry to the stadium is very poorly marked.

    Amazing Stadium, Amazing Game!!

by CardsinAZ on 11/7/17Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Great seats in Row 6 of Section 309 right on goal line. When plays are at the opposite end of the field, you can watch on the big screen just to your left. The music and cheers on 3rd down and kickoffs keeps the crowd in the game.

Great venue. Friendly staff. Only negative is that the seats on the visitor side are all bleachers. Otherwise, it is an awesome cove football stadium

    ASU staff great customer service

by Lcduncan on 10/28/17Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

We had our ticket barcode image from Ticketmaster on our iPhone. When we arrived at the gate the barcode had disappeared and only a picture of a ticket showed along with printing saying “past event”. When we went to the customerservice ticket counter and showed our phone images they issued another set of tickets for my wife and I. Different location in the stadium. Ticketmaster has yet to reply to my complaint

Great Game - Venue is lacking

by markinsandiego on 9/19/17Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

I travelled from San Diego, CA to attend this game. The teams matched up well - and the play on the field was great (if you're a San Diego State Aztec fan). The stadium is old and the remodel has improved the Video screen. Seating on the visitors side is NOT enjoyable or comfortable. Signage to help guests find their seats is non-existtant. Fans were courteous to out of town guests. People DO NOT sit in their assigned seats and aren't too happy about moving for you.
