Arizona State Sun Devils at Sun Devil Stadium

The Arizona State Sun Devils are a perennially tough opponent known for fielding competitive teams. Coached since 2018 by Herm Edwards, the Sun Devils have won 14 bowl games and 17 conference titles. Arizona State plays in Sun Devil Stadium, which originally opened in 1958 and underwent a five-year renovation that was finished in August 2019. Among other things, the stadium, which now seats around 55,000 people, added a 5,000-square-foot beer garden and space for the Pat Tillman Veterans Center.

Arizona State Sun Devils Football History

Arizona State's football program dates back to 1896, when the university was called the Territorial Normal School. During their initial existence, the team was known as the Tempe Normals. Later, the squad played as the Arizona State Bulldogs from 1922 to 1946 until adopting the Sun Devils as a name. Arizona State was independent until joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931. The team later played in the Western Athletic Conference between 1962 and 1977 before joining current league home the Pac-10 (now known as the Pac-12) in 1978.

Arizona State's legacy as a football powerhouse was cemented thanks to head coach Frank Kush, a ferocious leader who guided the program to just one losing record between 1958 and 1979. Under his watch, the Sun Devils won five straight Western Athletic Conference championships and went undefeated in 1970 and 1975, the two years they also won national championships. During the Kush era, Arizona State also won four straight Fiesta Bowls between 1970 and 1973. Other notable head coaches include College Football Hall of Fame member Dan Devine, who led the team three very successful winning seasons just before Kush took over, and Dennis Erickson, who guided the team to a Pac-10 co-championship and a Holiday Bowl appearance in 2007.

The Sun Devils have produced dozens of NFL players and several Pro Football Hall of Famers, including running back John Henry Johnson, cornerback Mike Haynes and wide receiver Charley Taylor. College Football Hall of Famer Pat Tillman, who was killed during combat while serving in the U.S. Army, is also an alum. The Sun Devils have a century-plus rivalry with the Arizona Wildcats. Every year, the two teams meet in what's known as the Duel in the Desert for control over the Territorial Cup, which was first awarded in 1899.

    Too Narrow Too Long

by DeeTee on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - Tempe

I don’t think ASU Stadium would meet today’s building codes. Probably grandfathered in. The breezeways/corridors are way too narrow for that many people. If there was an emergency, attendees of an event would be in trouble, if the event was at, or near, full capacity. And… football games, like many sporting events, are just too long. Twelve minutes per quarter would suffice.

Been to much better College Stadiums

by gtreview on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - Tempe

Stadium is antiquated, ridiculous cost for food and beverage and limited selection of foods and places to buy foods. This is a 54,000 stadium and to only have a few venues to eat is a dis-service to fans. 15.00 for a beer is way to much, and if you do not like Dos Equis or Coors light you are S.O.L as that's all they serve

    Great team; bad stadium

by Harlanman on 9/26/23Mountain America Stadium - Tempe

It was surprising how behind the times a major conference stadium was in terms of signage at the venue. There were no ongoing game score updates, comprehensive statistic comparisons or even a coherent down and distance updates. Sound production was typical 2023 louder than necessary, bludgeon you to death, over produced and used music and drop ins. (Was there any music made after 1990? Are stadiums required by the NCAA to overuse Thunderstruck by AC/DC?) Support personal was indifferent to ignorant on basic questions regarding the stadium or logistics. No designated or dedicated drop off or pick up point for ride share or taxi lead to a bunch of people wandering around trying to find a place to get picked up. Make sure you know where you are going after the game to get picked up. I absolutely loathe no cash venues for a variety of reasons. The entire horrible fan experience overshadowed a good team and game. Maybe some infusion of cash by joining the B12 will help update and modernize the stadium and fan experience but I'll never find out. My ASU experience was 180 degrees opposite of a Cardinals game across town.

ASU played poorly and got beat badly by a small school.

by Kurt on 9/20/22Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

The plus was that I got to be with family in a good , not so hot, environment! The bad was that ASU played so poorly that their coach was fired 2 days later. He was a bad coach, a poor hire. But normally ASU games are fun!! B

Great fun and positive energy at game.

    by T. C. on 11/30/21Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Great weather, positive energy and another ASU win made it almost a perfect day. The only complaint i have is the beer lines were way too long and this needs to be corrected for next football season. With more beer vendor locations around Sun Devil Stadium the university could double there profits and more fans could get back to there seats asap to watch the football game and also watch and enjoy the bands perform at halftime!

No cell signal at the gate

by Matt on 11/9/21Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

Ticketmaster doesn't allow screenshots of the tickets so you've got to have cell service at the gate in order to bring them up. I was 20 mins late into the game because I was forced to walk away from the stadium to get service in order to be able to bring up my tickets. Super inconvenient.

    Nice But Noisy Venue

by College Football Fan on 11/9/21Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

The remodeled Sun Devil Stadium is very nice and clean but the music being piped in over the stadium speakers was way, way too loud. It was difficult to carry on a conversation when the music was playing and it often times competed with and overwhelmed the music coming out of the school band. The noise level will make me think twice about going to another game at the stadium.

    USC vs ASU Football

by Maureen on 11/9/21Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

We were very disappointed with our experience. We arrived early based on the info that the gates would open at 5:30 but they did not open until 6:30. The food service was good and we enjoyed a burger at Cheeseburgers and cold beer. We were supporting the visiting team and the home fans seated around us were polite. The biggest problem was that the PA system was constantly blaring and very loud, drowning out both the home and visiting bands. The big screens featured young fans jumping up and down and showed my off their physiques. It was like Facebook or Instagram, not an athletic event. When we left the PA continued to blast and could be heard for quite a distance. We will not be attending any more ASU football games at Sun Devil Stadium.

    ASU vs Stanford Game

by hdsundevil on 10/11/21Sun Devil Stadium - Tempe

The seat tickets were great, and we had a fantastic time at the game! The parking pass is another issue. There was no map nor address given for the parking pass, and we literally drove around for 40+ minutes due to traffic trying to find the lot! Please do a much better job on providing parking guidance with future passes.
