Arizona State Sun Devils Football History

The Arizona State Sun Devils football team competes in the Big 12 Conference and first took the field in 1897. Independent until joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931, the school formerly known as Arizona State Teachers College later moved to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 1962. The Sun Devils were members of the Pac-12 Conference from 1978 to 2023.

Over the years, the Sun Devils have claimed 18 conference championships: seven in the Border Conference, seven in the WAC, three in the Pac-12 and one in the Big 12. Nine titles were won under Head Coach Frank Kush, who led the team from 1958 to 1979. During his tenure, Kush also led the Sun Devils to two undefeated seasons, in 1970 and 1975, and seven bowl games. The Sun Devils have won 15 of their 33 all-time bowl game appearances.

Despite such a unique mascot, the Sun Devils first played as the Normals, Owls and Bulldogs. The current moniker and its distinct Sparky the Sun Devil mascot were adopted in 1946 and 1948, respectively. The team holds a regional rivalry with the Arizona Wildcats, who also moved to the Big 12 ahead of the 2024-25 season, and the two teams compete annually for the Territorial Cup. Distinguished ASU alumni include future Pro Football Hall of Famers Randall McDaniel, Mike Haynes, Charley Taylor and John Henry Johnson.

  • ASU vs MISS STATE

by Fork fan on 9/10/24Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 4 out of 5

great game and great atmosphere. Always hoping for improved concessions. I’d love to see more activities for fans .. ie football toss or picture taking opportunities .. maybe past players at a booth.. that sort of thing. Otherwise, as long as the team keeps plying great and giving us exciting games it will be a pleasure to attend !

The ticketing process was really easy, tickets were transferred to me without any issues. I was able to download them quickly and enter the game in timely manner.

  • ASU Students - Zero Class!

by Never Again on 9/3/24Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 1 out of 5

I could understand the nasty "F Wyoming"chants all game, if this was a big rivalry, or something, as most student fanbases can be like that. But a non-rivalry game, with very little history? And it wasn't just the students, there were quite a few other fans, in other sections, equally as polished. I guess ASU doesn't need the tourism, visiting fans, and similar, but that is no excuse. Even the ASU alums we traveled with, were embarrassed. Never again for this group, and I will certainly be cheering against ASU going forward.

  • Great Experience Lousy Game

by Sun Devil Dad on 11/29/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

Enjoyed the experience with my Son! Rode the light rail to the stadium, no issues there! Unfortunately, the Sun Devils were a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!

  • Awesome Stadium!

  • DUCKS RULE

    by CT4DUCKS on 11/23/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

The students walking on the campus were more aware of where to go and how to get there than the people working at the stadium and seating and more directional signage would be helpful. EX: Parking structure arrow directions. Plackard on stadium parking structure. Directional signs marking paths to stadium seating.

Wonderful Stadium with good beer & food court on the north end. Pregame food & beverage choices were plentiful outside of the stadium. Great seats & sound system throughout the game. Weather couldn’t have been better to complement a great day of college football!

  • Colorado VS ASU Football Game

by Que on 10/12/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 4 out of 5

There was a ton of people but we were able to get through the crowds of people and get to our seats pretty easily. The lines for drinks went pretty smoothly. When I went to the bathroom they had enough paper towel. Later on I dropped my I.D. and didn't know it. One of the guys sitting in my row told me and said to ask one of the cops standing behind the football team because they had it. The cop asked around and gave it back to me. I didn't have to go to Lost and Found. Praise God for the good samaritan and kind police officers.

  • Good Experience

by SD Sun Devil on 10/12/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 4 out of 5

The atmosphere was fun; our seats were great; and the game was exciting. My only complaint was the length of the concessions lines. Before and during halftime all of the lines were extremely long--too long for me to wait in.

  • Great game but parking is a nightmare

by Sdmgill on 10/12/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

Everything was great except the parking and concessions. You can tell ASU is not used to sellout crowds. Bought reserved parking with my tickets but was told the lot was full when we arrived a little over an hour before kickoff. We were told to park in another lot (lot 6) which was “right across the street”. Never saw lot 6 as we were corralled like cattle through the streets to a parking garage. No idea where we were going since there was no signage along the way. Parking garage did accept my eTicket so it all worked out in the end. Ended up getting to our seats 7 minutes before kickoff. Concession lines were absurdly long until late 4th quarter. One of the people sitting next to us took over 30 minutes just to buy water and popcorn. Great game and experience otherwise.

  • Great!

by Willy on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 5 out of 5

It was just a great all around experience. The game itself was incredible (Colorado). The stadium is beautiful and easy enough to get around. Lots of stairs though lol Had a great time.

  • Great sests

by Chelle on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 5 out of 5

The seats chosen for the game were greats. The price was well worth it.

  • Too Narrow Too Long

by DeeTee on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

I don’t think ASU Stadium would meet today’s building codes. Probably grandfathered in. The breezeways/corridors are way too narrow for that many people. If there was an emergency, attendees of an event would be in trouble, if the event was at, or near, full capacity. And… football games, like many sporting events, are just too long. Twelve minutes per quarter would suffice.

  • Been to much better College Stadiums

by gtreview on 10/10/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

Stadium is antiquated, ridiculous cost for food and beverage and limited selection of foods and places to buy foods. This is a 54,000 stadium and to only have a few venues to eat is a dis-service to fans. 15.00 for a beer is way to much, and if you do not like Dos Equis or Coors light you are S.O.L as that's all they serve

  • Great team; bad stadium

by Harlanman on 9/26/23Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 1 out of 5

It was surprising how behind the times a major conference stadium was in terms of signage at the venue. There were no ongoing game score updates, comprehensive statistic comparisons or even a coherent down and distance updates. Sound production was typical 2023 louder than necessary, bludgeon you to death, over produced and used music and drop ins. (Was there any music made after 1990? Are stadiums required by the NCAA to overuse Thunderstruck by AC/DC?) Support personal was indifferent to ignorant on basic questions regarding the stadium or logistics. No designated or dedicated drop off or pick up point for ride share or taxi lead to a bunch of people wandering around trying to find a place to get picked up. Make sure you know where you are going after the game to get picked up. I absolutely loathe no cash venues for a variety of reasons. The entire horrible fan experience overshadowed a good team and game. Maybe some infusion of cash by joining the B12 will help update and modernize the stadium and fan experience but I'll never find out. My ASU experience was 180 degrees opposite of a Cardinals game across town.
