Arizona State Sun Devils Football History

The Arizona State Sun Devils football team competes in the Big 12 Conference and first took the field in 1897. Independent until joining the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1931, the school formerly known as Arizona State Teachers College later moved to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 1962. The Sun Devils were members of the Pac-12 Conference from 1978 to 2023.

Over the years, the Sun Devils have claimed 18 conference championships: seven in the Border Conference, seven in the WAC, three in the Pac-12 and one in the Big 12. Nine titles were won under Head Coach Frank Kush, who led the team from 1958 to 1979. During his tenure, Kush also led the Sun Devils to two undefeated seasons, in 1970 and 1975, and seven bowl games. The Sun Devils have won 15 of their 33 all-time bowl game appearances.

Despite such a unique mascot, the Sun Devils first played as the Normals, Owls and Bulldogs. The current moniker and its distinct Sparky the Sun Devil mascot were adopted in 1946 and 1948, respectively. The team holds a regional rivalry with the Arizona Wildcats, who also moved to the Big 12 ahead of the 2024-25 season, and the two teams compete annually for the Territorial Cup. Distinguished ASU alumni include future Pro Football Hall of Famers Randall McDaniel, Mike Haynes, Charley Taylor and John Henry Johnson.

  • Awesome Date Night

Started the night off, before the game, at The Hundred Mile Brewery with drinks and apps. Quality and prices were super! After the weather cleared, we walked a short distance to the marina to catch our Water Taxi. The Taxi itself drops you off about a block from Mountain America Stadium. This is such a great option to parking at the stadium. Getting in and out of the stadium was quick and easy. Game was exciting! Great entertainment value and over- all evening.

As a Big Ten regular that had a pretty negative view of the ol' Pac 10/12, I was truly impressed with how much energy there was in the desert. Cannot wait to go back!

  • Prices keep going up and up and up

  • What an awesome experience!

What a great day! We were first timers to a college football game. The tickets for parking and the game was perfect. They were delivered seamlessly with ample time before the event and transferred to the wallet without issue. Entry was just as easy! One in our party had mobility challenges and the event staff offered a shuttle and to The one on sitting in the truck our seats to a more accessible location without initiating a request. The venue was impressive, the game was extremely exciting and we were treated like gold. A memorable and incredible experience! Thank you for making the acquisition process so easy!

  • Great time and fun experience!! Go Devils!!

    by Erod3 on 11/26/24Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 4 out of 5

My family and I had a great time recently at the Sun Devils game! They improved their beverage offerings, they now have a lot of guys walking around selling adult beverages and also had them walking up and down the isles. This was convenient since it can be a pain to constantly walk up and down the stairs, much appreciated. The area that needs the most work are the restrooms. There’s constantly a line coming out the doors and they get pretty nasty during the games. I think they should either look into adding additional restroom facilities or expand what they have. Also having someone periodically trying to clean them during the games wouldn’t be a bad idea. Other than that, no complaints, it was easy to get in and out of the stadium as well.

  • Nice facility

Make it easier to get ADA chairs and scooters to the upper level, But more importantly, provide a secure area to park the chairs so that we don’t have to worry about theft or vandalism

  • Excellent Experience

by Gary on 11/12/24Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed visiting the game. My biggest challenge was finding the stadium parking facilities. I stopped at various parking locations and showed my ticket stub but know one new what location "STAD"stood for. After stopping at a 4th location they "LET US IN FREE"because they didn't know where it was. WE know now!

  • poor parking and entrance, great action

by Chris W on 10/14/24Mountain America Stadium - TempeRating: 4 out of 5

I would say the driving, parking and entering the game was exhausting and frustrating, but the game and action was fantastic. We live approximately 15 minutes from ASU and we left at 6:15 for a 7:30 friday evening game. We sat down in our seats at exactly 7:38 and unfortunately missed all of the pregame. It took us and hour and 23 minutes to get from our front door to our seats. I get that we were playing a ranked team and it was televised, but there still could be improvements. I prepaid $40.00 for a spot in Lot 6 (too expensive) and if you google maps Lot 6, it tells you to go to Lot 6 in Glendale. We traveled blindly to the game and found lot 6 and proceeded in. The attendant scanned out parking code and said it was declined, but let us in anyway as he did not want to wait for me to prove that I paid for it. He also said Lot 6 is full and to proceed onto Lot 9. We drove blindly around lot 6 looking for lot 9 and ended up going down a gravel path the turned into a golf cart path, behind some building with dumpsters and i'm feeling like "this cannot be the route to Lot 9". There are also no Pre EM event service attendants anywhere to help guide us. That was super frustrating. We eventually came to a fence with no attendant and just drove through the gate and found some Pro Em attendants in the grass lot and showed us where to park. We had about a 20 minute walk to the stadium with no issues until it was time to show our tickets. Its obviously all electronic and my tickets would not pull up; I'm assuming due to the large volume of people using the service. It took us trying to use my sons hot-spot, then logging on to the arena service with no luck, then just waiting for us to be able to retrieve out tickets. That took about 10 minutes as we were closing in on 7:30 and really wanting to get in our seats. There were many others with the same issue and many more getting kicked out of line to join us that were trying the to pull their tickets up as well. There are kiosks that need to be used to get in and our tickets were difficult to get to scan, but they did eventually work. Once we were in our seat, ASU put on a great game and I could not have been more happy with the action of the game as well as entertainment regarding fireworks and in stadium action (although no mortars are used anymore, just colorful shooting fireworks; another disappointment). I will certainly go again, but leave much earlier.
