Nessun Dorma... Everyone Awake & Well!

by ToneAndo on 2/7/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The only thing I knew about Turandot was that THE ARIA has made me weep since first hearing it sung directly to my inner being by Luciano. No matter who has sung it since, the melody has always managed to unleash a torrent of pent-up emotion. The mystery remained closed in me; closed until the curtain opened with a beautifully performed score, and a stage set well suited for a cast of talented singers. The stand out performers were the Slave, the Father and of course, the Tenor who effortlessly breathed life to the eagerly awaited aria. The emotional intensity of the performance was overwhelmingly applauded by a wildly enthusiastic audience... and this weeping spectator who finally experienced the understanding of the mystery contained is us all. The Arts, in this case, great music, can warm & unleash our deepest, dormant mysteries.

    Beautiful staging, excellent opera selection

    by ieke85 on 2/5/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The set design, the colors, the blocking (how and where the characters moved on stage), and all the other visuals were fantastic. This was also an excellent opera to include in the season. Ping, Pang, and Pong were hilarious!

    Tucson Turandot Top Drawer!

by OracleGeorge on 2/2/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Overall, an excellent presentation of a challenging opera. Given these difficult budgetary times, the staging was imaginative, the costuming was brilliant and the interpretation was marvelous. The only ding was some of the singing was not up to standard; this was foreseen by the MC who forewarned us of some flu bug remnants.

    The women have it

by susierp on 2/1/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

The sopranos were very, very good. Calif was mediocre at best. Perhaps that was because he was sick - the announcer at the beginning said many of the cast were ill. At times we could not hear him above the orchestra.

    Puccini's Turandot

by goddessnatalia on 2/1/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

I love this Opera! It is so wonderful to be lifted up by so many talented voices, lavish set design and costumes here in Tucson at the AZ Opera performance of Turandot. Sold out performances shows the appreciation for the arts here in Tucson.

    Turandot was Spectacular

by VanessaVal on 2/1/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

We were visiting from LA, and had reserved the tickets in advance. The seats were good and the Music Hall venue was good. The tenor was the best and the staging was very good. We really enjoyed it. The 2011-12 season sounds fantastic.

    Turandot

by haben on 1/31/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Amazing set and amazing singers (despite some affected by a cold) and a very good choir. Hadn't I been occupied this week I would have travelled to Phoenix to experience another performance of Turandot !!!

    Turandot supporting chorus was amazing

by cjm1600 on 1/31/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

I was impressed not only by the size and behavior of those in attendance, but the supporting choir will always be unforgettable for me. The tenor, bass, soprano, and alto blended so well that it sounded like only one blended one-note-chord. I have rarely heard such precision and blending of voices. I am grateful for this most inspiring performance.

Turandot was not quite on the dot

by emwhydee on 1/26/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The first act staging was quite dark. We sat in the last row balcony which could have accounted for that but it was almost hard to see the people with opera glasses. The acoustics at Symphony Hall are wonderful but I thought the singing could have been better by some. Turandot's voice could have been stronger and Caleph could also have been stronger and fuller. The rest of the cast was wonderful. Caleph's father had a rich full voice and Liu's soprano was beautiful with rich tones and highs. This was the first opera I had seen in Phoenix after attending several in NYC. I would recommend it but I thought the leads could have been slightly stronger. The chorus and orchestra were outstanding. A chorus member fainted during the second act and I appreciated that someone came out and told us what had happened so we weren't left wondering.

    Turandot a success!

    by Calaf59 on 1/26/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Overall a real joy to attend! Good cast. Liu was fabulous! Timur was also very good. The orchestra had a couple of intonation problems and wasn't as rythmically crisp as I would have liked. Turandot had a big voice that carried well even if encumbered at times with a wide vibrato. Calaf sang way too far back in his throat in the middle of his range and tight and too far back at the top of his range. Indeed, some of his high notes disappeared with full orchestra and chorus. It would have rung through had it been forward and in the head. Otherwise, great singing in general. Ping, Pang and Pong sounded great vocally and were delightful on stage! Costumes were great. Chorus was fantastic! Can't wait for the rest of this season and next seasons offerings. Thank you Arizona Opera for continuing to bring quality grand opera to our valley!

    Turandot: Extremely disappointed

by Perrod on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Coming from someone who has attended a lot of Opera performances around the country, this was the most disappointing performance I've ever attended. The venue website stated this is a rarely performed opera, I think I know why... Thanks.

A very nice rendition of Turandot. I will probably buy season tickets for next year.

    high price for perfume headache

by AZhummingbird on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The tickets are very expensive for seats that weren't that good, and women around us had so much perfume on it made it very uncomfortable. The woman who sang Liu had a beautiful voice.

    Wonderful!

    by Ron46 on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

My wife and I were not familiar with the opera Turandot other than the well known aria Nessum Dorma. I was hoping it would have more to offer and was not disappointed. We both enjoyed it immensely. The performers, costumes and sets were wonderful. I guess we need to expand our knowledge of opera. It would have been a shame to miss this one. If you enjoy opera at all... don't miss Turandot.

    Turandot

    by Hoosier909 on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

I go to the opera every year and am a huge Puccini fan. Turandot was one performance that I had missed over the years and was thrilled to see that the Arizona Opera would be performing it again after a ten year absence. It is a magnificent production and to hear "Nessum Dorma' performed live is worth the price of the ticket! A wonderful experience.

    Turandot was wonderful

by Labtecher on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

I found the Arizona Opera's production of Turandot absolutely wonderful. Jill Gardner who sang the part of Liu has an amazing voice. Arnold Rawls' Nessun Dorma was also a highlight. However, the Sunday matinee audience jumped the gun on their enthusiastic applause and cheers and he didn't get to finish the last phrasing. The chorus singing was beautiful. I have gone to many of the San Francisco Opera Company's productions (but not Turandot) and I thought this performance was as good as any I saw in San Francisco. Really. I am very proud of the Arizona Opera Company. Bernard Uzan did a great job. I recognized Kevin Langan from seeing him in Wagner's The Ring in San Francisco. All in all, Turndot was absolutely great.

    Turandot a mixed bag

by nyaloka on 1/25/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Scene 1 was quite effectively staged, giving a good sense of the crowds and rumors/confusion among the poorer classes of that era. It seemed excessively dark and dreary and we might have chosen not to continue. Scene 2 was much brighter and more pleasant to watch; the core of the story is pretty much packed in here. Scene 3 really dragged on. The lead performances were quite strong overall. I'm glad I've seen it once, but doubt I would go again.
