Entertaining opera. Had a good amount of drama and comedy which drew you in more. First act was a little slow but not boring by any means. I really enjoyed.

Music and voice at its best!

by Chattycatty on 3/16/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

The Phoenix opera production of Othello was wonderful. The venue was superb. We enjoyed the orchestra and the cast. Drama, Drama, Drama! Certainly one of Verdi's triumphs. We enjoyed the chat after the opera with some of the cast members. This was a Sunday afternoon that was most enjoyable.

    Otello

    by KMan500 on 3/15/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Fabulous performance. Only negative was the set design. The minimalist approach to this set design detracted from the overall experience.

    Outstanding Opera

by Malfayne on 3/15/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

This Otello was wonderful. Alan Glassman was perfect in the role, both from a singing and acting standpoint. Desdemona (don't recall her name) was adequate, though her singing could have been a bit stronger. All in all, a rewarding opera experience.

    Otello was captivating!

by Teamo on 3/15/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

My 12 year old son, (who very reluctantly attended this Opera as a favor to his Grandpa), enjoyed Otello very much in spite of himself!:) I would definitely recommend this Opera to anyone who has never seen an Opera as it's a great "first time" Opera treat:)

    Excellent time

    by Newbie77 on 3/14/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Loved this production of Otello. One of the few Shakespeare that I have not read myself. I thoroughly enjoyed Verdi's Otello. Voices were fantastic and the music was thrilling. Recommend for the new and the old to opera, it's a great time.

    New to the Opera

by KSchoth on 3/14/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

OK... as hard as this is for me to admit, I enjoyed Otello. Never thought I would actually like the opera, but it was really cool. Music is awesome, voices incredible... if you are thinking of going... then go!

    First Timer

by Krisroks on 3/14/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

I purchased these tickets a few days before the event through an online sale that got me half off, so I decided to take the little lady as I figured this surprise would make her happy, and ultimately me. I was debating between the balcany and one of the front rows, left or right stage. I was hesitant about left and right stage because I figured I wouldn't be able to see the other half very well. Boy was I wrong. These seats were amazing! The only downfall was this show had subtitles for those of us that didn't speak Italian, so I had to look up top to the screen every few minutes. It was worth it however, we were up close and personal with the actors on stage and could see many little things those at the balcany could not. The opera isn't for me, but this was a spectacular show with an amazing cast and I don't regret going. Would I do it again? Probably not, but I would see a show that was in my native tongue and I didn't have to look up to the monitor to follow the story.

    Almost perfect!

by asupatty on 3/14/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Otello was unforgetable and a rare treat! Loved every moment! There isn't a bad seat in the house and everyone was so polite and enjoyed. Only ptoblem was that the digital reader did not keep up with the singing and it became slightly frustrating to me as I do not speak the language! Everything else -- an evening/ night to remember

    Good Performance

    by Clink1 on 3/13/11Symphony Hall - Phoenix

Principle singers were very good. Chorus was somewhat ragged at the beginning but got better. Stage settings were OK, imaginative, but could have been a little richer. But perhaps this reflects a lack of funding. Movements on the stage a little wooden: " Come and stand here and sing, then go away." Audience a bit rude to start leaving before expressing appreciation. An enjoyable experience.

terrific performance of Othelo in Tucson

by dancinqueen225 on 3/10/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

We had the pleasure of seeing the Arizona Opera's production of Othelo in Tucson, and for lukewarm opera enthusiasts, it was quite a pleasure. Fabulous singers, staging and costumes. With the overhead translations, it kept us riveted. A wonderful overall experience, and yes, we would take in another of their productions next year!

Sitting in the back of the orchestra section, I found it difficult to hear the singing, diction in the first half of the opera. The second half was better. Great costumes and staging. Lead singers did a great job, but projection was a bit off.

The voices were outstanding. The costumes and set were excellent. The orchestra was outstanding. Otello is not one of my favorite operas, but it was truly enjoyable.

My husband and I were disappointed w/the soprano who performed 3/6/11. The tremolo was unpleasant.

    Great perfomance! Lousy audience...

by Cliffopold on 3/7/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

Having just completed a research paper on "Hamlet" I was thrilled to find a Shakesperean-based production coming to Tucson. Verdi's Otello is certainly a masterful piece, as full of heart-wrenching tragedy and riveting musical interpretation as the program suggested. I loved every moment from Act 1 until curtains after Desdemona's murder without reservation. That being said, my experience was somewhat ruined by my fellow audience members. Call it my own ill-fated destiny, but when I watched "La Sonnambula" last year I had a similar experience. The row of old fogies behind me felt the need to chatter mindlessly for the entire play. It got worse after Act 3, when the majority of the cast took a bow because they were no longer needed for Act 4. They couldn't understand why, and commented on how confused they were and how weird this opera was at least 15 times all through Act 4. A simple reading of the program would have shown them that Verdi intentionally kept the opera running at a high tempo - I'm sure this producer decided to give his stars and cast a break before the finale. The old termagant's breath behind me smelled something fierce, a cross between Ben Gay and dying road kill, and I was terrorized by it every time she wheezed her witch's cackling cough (which was frequent). I love opera, I seriously do, but I don't care to deal with peoples' deteriorating health problems and rude dispositions.

    About average

by Sonia2011 on 3/7/11Tucson Music Hall - Tucson

The gentleman who played Iago was spectacular. I just wish that the Arizona Opera had more funds, the sets were mediocre at best.

The singing was excellent (even to my non-musical ears). The Opera, my first time to see Otello, was disappointing. It was not engaging and the score unremarkable. The set and staging were sub standard, lets say high school level. All in all, not worth the hhigh cost of the tickets...find another show.
