Arizona Coyotes History

Before they were the Arizona Coyotes, this franchise — a founding member of the World Hockey Association — was originally based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and began playing in 1972 as the Jets. The early team made headlines before the season even started after signing hockey star Bobby Hull from the Chicago Blackhawks. The Jets went on to be one of the best teams in the league, winning three titles from 1976 to 1979.

The WHA merged with the NHL before the 1979-1980 season, but the Jets were unable to maintain their dominance and the franchise was relocated to Arizona before the 1996-1997 season; they became known as the Phoenix Coyotes. The Coyotes subsequently qualified for the postseason in each of their first four seasons and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became a minority owner of the team in 2000 and their head coach in 2005.

After filing bankruptcy in 2009, the team was later purchased by the NHL. Despite the tumultuous seasons, the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009-2010 season. In the 2011-2012 season, they won their first division title in franchise history. In 2013, the NHL sold the team and its name was changed to the Arizona Coyotes in 2014. Since 1997, the Coyotes have made it to the playoffs a total of nine times.

The Whiteout was an awesome experience,we had a great time. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the fact that the Coyotes lost the game,

    entertaining under pressure

    by luke2 on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Despite all the off ice pressure, a new coach, and all that comes along with same new systems etc. the team played a very entertaining game. The tension was obvious however in the handling of the puck especially on the power play opportunities. The players showed they were uptight trying not to make a mistake . As they gain confidence in the new coach and his systems the benefits will emerge. This will however take at least multiple games and practises. In the meantime the marketing dept. will have to continue to build on, what I would say has been an "A" effort leading up to the home opener. Keep it up!!!

Coyotes hockey is non stop action

    by EDB66 on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

The fans, music, and energy at Jobing.Com Arena was intense and even though the Coyotes lost they were in it for the whole the game. Lots of hard hitting action. Everyone in the Phoenix area should at least check it out once, watching it live is alot different then seeing it on TV.

    Opening Night Whiteout

by Tashimojo on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Well, the Yoties were not the same team that beat the pants off of the defending Stanley Cup champs, but it was still a great game. There's not much that can beat a live hockey game.

Good times for the most part.

by ChefBeth on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

So let's be honest...the real reason there was a sell-out for this game is that the tickets were so ridiculously cheap. I got to sit at lower level center ice for $20. Those are normally $80 seats. If they lowered ticket prices a little, they might see more fan loyalty. I would spend $50 max to sit in those seats, but definitely not $80. The players seemed grateful the fans were there and there was much more acknowledgement to the fans than in years past as well. If you are loyal to us, we'll be loyal to you. It was also nice that the Coyotes played with some spirit and passion. It made blowing all of those power plays they had *almost* tolerable. But they scrapped and they fought and they weren't the drones they have been while under the Gretzky regime where emotion was taboo. Passion, competition, and spirit are going to keep the fans coming back. Well that and winning a game or two. ;) Food is way too expensive at this arena. It was $6 for a plastic tin of Tostitos chips with Costco cheese on the side. $6? Really? At least the parking was free.... The between-period "entertainment" was very disappointing considering all the hype surrounding the White Out for the home opener. No games. No actual entertainment. And the people who give away the t-shirts need to give away the damn t-shirts. They spend way too much time trying to get people to scream and not enough t-shirts are given away. It's a farce. They definitely missed the golden opportunity to keep fans excited in that area. This is a pivotal year for you. Step it up! But then, we aren't there for the between-period entertainment anyway. Thank you Coyotes for a good scrappy game. Had you not been remotely passionate or competitive, it would have made for a really questionable future for you here in Phoenix.

Coyotes played terrifically but didn't get the win. However the fans got a win! A great game at great prices equalled a great value for my family! Let's do it again :-)

by arleyVanCity on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

We're Canucks season ticket holders in Vancouver in tow. In Phoenix for a holiday and decided to go to the game last night with our 2 small children. It was a fantastic time, the entire family loved it! There was a lot of energy in the crowd, I was so impressed with the fan base the Coyote have! Great job yotes!!

    Phoenix Coyotes Opening Game 2009

by puke on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

I think the refs did a horrible job calling this game. I think the Coyotes played hard and well, just not well enough. Obviously, Columbus has a killer goalie, and an unsportsman-like team who plays dirty.

    Good game, undesireable results

by keeptheyotes on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Close tight-checking game, very reminiscent of a playoff game with great energy in the crowd. I'm going to as many games as possible to help keep the yotes in PHX well beyond this year - LETS GO YOTES!

    Coyotes shutout in whiteout

by RickyMac on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

In a game that was a potential opportunity to salvage NHL hockey in Phoenix, the Coyotes choked big time and gave one little to “howl” about. Fans were enticed to come and watch for a discounted price and they got a discounted performance. Although the box score will show that the Coyotes outshot the Blue Jackets by a wide margin, the Coyotes shooting left a lot to be desired with little accuracy, and little power to their shots. Phoenix had a significant “man advantage" throughout the game but never really threatened as they always took one pass to many and never really created shooting lanes. Unfortunately bad hockey in a game that was important to building fan base momentum. Final note: The Coyotes Marketing department over killed the "whiteout" hype and made it a nuisance with their constant attempt to make it sound special. Knowing when to say enough is as important as saying something. As for watching the Coyotes again, I will just probably see them from my back yard in the desert, where they do howl and given the number of them know how to score.

    Fun as always

    by B1Bomber on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

It was great to see the energy back in the Arena! Phoenix does love there doggies still and its apparent that we want them to stay. Its been a rough couple years, but the white out was a great reminder of the good times in the past.

    hockey is awesome

by kodiakkid on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

even though the coyotes were held scoreless the game was extremely entertaining. we would be season ticket holders if we could get lower level seats for 25 dollars every game.

    Awesome White out

by xguard on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

LOVED going to the Coyote white out. It was awesome to see so many fans! The Coyotes seemed a little intimidated by the packed house and seemed to really have the jitters. We love the Coyotes and are always behind them good or bad. You guys need to stay confident like you started out and know that home ice is the time to get the job done. We're there to help you! We will definitely be back :)

coyotes whiteout opener was a lot of fun

    by luna9 on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

Although the game was a disappointment since they lost, the event was fun because the fans and the cheering/music made it exciting, especially for my kids. The arena was impressive - bright, clean and lots of options for food and drink. Hot dogs were delicious!

    The great whiteout

by JohnnyLucky on 10/11/09JOBING.COM ARENA - Glendale

They were giving away white Phoenix Coyotes t-shirts to everyone and almost everyone wore them. It was billed as the Phoenix whiteout and the fans loved it. It was great to see all the fans come out and support the team. The seats in the arena are excellent. There are probably very very few seats with bad views.
