About

Arguably one of the most unique and captivating metal bands on earth, Apocalyptica have today announced their anticipated return to Australian shores! Presented by MJR Presents, the four-piece cello outfit are returning to play the biggest rooms they have ever played in Australia.

Having previously sold out solo runs around Australia, and surprised fans on the 2015 Soundwave Festival tour, the Finnish ‘cello metal’ group will return to Australia in September, for two brand new shows at some of the country’s most prestigious halls; the brand new The Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, the iconic Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall.

The Finnish, cello-driven rock opus, who changed the landscape of both heavy and classical music for years to come with the release of their 1996 album "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos", have built a reputation for incredible live shows, which consistently blurs the line between metal, classical, theatre and rock-opera. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the album, the group re-released it, remastered with 3 bonus tracks on July 22, 2016. Added to this new version were brand new / never-before-released instrumental recordings of "Battery," "Nothing Else Matters" and "Seek & Destroy."

After playing over 170 "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos" concerts in more than 40 countries, Apocalyptica went on to release seven critically acclaimed albums, selling over 6 million records worldwide.

Over the course of their career, Apocalyptica have played at venues like the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia and have brought places like the Summit in Denver to capacity.

    odd couple of concerts.

by soapdish on 8/25/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York City

Opening band Evaline was okay. They played about 5 songs and were good enough that it didn't drag. They seemed fairly talented and versatile as musicians, but their songs didn't impress me much. Dir En Grey appeared to be what most people were there for. Before seeing the show I was somewhat famliar with and interested in them, but ultimately I was unimpressed. The music was okay, but failed to truely inspire me. Meanwhile the raving japanophiles in the crowd kept pushing toward the stage not to jump, headbang, or mosh but to take pictures and video which to me takes away from the experience. I was hoping for theatricality and only got the mundane. Now Apocolyptica is a group I've somewhat been a fan of for a little while and I was very curious as to what their live show would be like. I had no idea what I was in for. While I knew they used a lot of cello, I never realized they were just 3 celloists and a drummer/bassist. Seeing such a unique group was exciting enough, but they were also great showmen that made it a lot of fun. They demonstrated a true mastery of their craft by playing with a variety of musical genres ranging from classical to true thrash metal. Definintely an unforgetable experience that made up the lackluster performances of the other bands.

Amazing show. Especially Dir en Grey. I would love to see them do a dedicated show in the US soon. The set list was a good mix of old and new songs. We also brought two friends with us who had never been to a Dir en Grey concert before, and they absolutely loved them.

Apocalyptica was amazing. I thought Dir en grey was terrible, but i just don't like the band at all.

It was AWESOME!! I was in the front, where all the action was. It was brilliant. My favourite band is Dir en Grey, but Evaline and Apocalyptica rocked too!! The opening act, Evaline, is definitely a band worth checking out. Dir en Grey really pumped up the crowd, and Toshiya ( the bassist) was such a tease! All in all, it was great!

    Dir En Grey ROCKED!

by Kaydeenj on 8/25/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York City

Dir En Grey was even more amazing live than I expected! Their vocalist's range was incredible...although it was hard to appreciate that at first since the venue's sound crew didn't get the levels right until about 20 minutes into their set, but that was not Dir En Grey's fault. Nonetheless, once they got it right, the band sounded amazing! It was completely worth being there...they put on a high energy, kick-ass show different from anything I've seen in a long time. I highly recommend getting out to see Dir En Grey if you have the chance because these guys are KILLER!!

    DIR EN GREY = GREAT

by Kittieskitties123 on 8/25/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York City

Dir En Grey was pretty amazing live! I cannot believe that Kyo can actually make all those sounds. His vocal range is incredible! They only played for 1 hour which wasn't long enough! That and the crazy super bright lighting is what made me give the show 4 stars.

The two bands had 2 VERY different groups of listeners/fans and they did not mesh well together creating a weird atmosphere. Also, You could hear that the mic was not working completely well during certain portions for the vocalist of Dir en Grey. The venue itself is nice and the GA floor area was actually cleaner than many venues. But the lights from the stage could warrant a need for sunglasses at times if you want to see the stage at all, kind of blinding, sitting in the seated area towards the back.

Evaline started the nite off and I simply can't believe they made it on the bill. I couldn't stand them. Some of the music wasn't too bad but the vocalist killed whatever good there was in that. Dir En Grey was great. First time seeing them and it was worth it. The only problem was you couldn't hear the vocalist, the band drowned him out for the majority of their set unless he was singing the harsher vocals. Disappointed in that very much since he's got a great voice. Apocalyptica was pretty much the reason I was there and they didn't disappoint at all. Again this is my first time seeing them in person. They sounded clear and perfect, the harmonies were amazing. It seems though that Dir En Grey got a longer set.

Dir en Grey knows what they're doing

by Zepur on 8/25/10Nokia Theatre Times Square - New York City

Glad that Dir en Grey was up first, they make you want to get in without pushing you into it. Amazing, 5 stars all the way.

    A KICK-ASS concert!!!!

by Razbeariez on 5/25/10Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

Apocalyptica is one band that gives 100% to their fans up on stage. It was a concert I will never forget! They played old and new songs, it was really nice for Apocalyptica fans that know more than just the two songs that the radio stations play.

All I Can Say Is Wow

by Sestina on 5/24/10Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

This was one of the most amazing shows I have ever attended. I have listened to Apocalyptica a whole lotta times, but you have no clue how amazing these guys are until you have seen them perform live. They have talent beyond some of these bands out there making "music". I mean, alot of people can stand up on stage, play a few instruments and scream into a mic, but it takes real talent to play a cello like these guys do. We were blown away and can't wait to see them again.

    Phenomenal performance

by Bergton on 5/24/10Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

Although a bit late, this show was unlike any other. Obviously Apocalyptica fans will find this tour refreshing, and also rekindling memories from 1996. The energy of the band and the combined quality of performance made a true experience. At $20, it's absolutely the best value show out there!!

Apocalyptica; great show...when it finally started

by Joash on 5/23/10Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

Great show, tons of energy, awesome talent, real musicians. Other than the show starting over an hour and a half late, the show was pretty much worth the wait. Would go again!

    Awesome! ...as expected!

by MikeyOH on 5/23/10Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

I'm a huge fan. I saw Apocalyptica for the first time about a year and a half ago in Denver, CO. They totally blew me away. The show at Headliners was great! The force of sound these guys generate on stage is mindblowing! Anyone who is a fan of real music should see these guys live! The only negative comment I have is that there was apparently some kind of technical difficulties that delayed the show for about an hour and a half. The show was definitely worth the wait, but there was absolutely no communication (or apology) from the band or the staff of Headliners to let people (your paying customers!) know what was going on. I thought that was very unprofessional of both parties. Regardless, the show was amazing, and I'll see Apocalyptica live any chance I get! Can't wait for the new album!!!
