About

"ALL ABOARD for this saucy and splendid production of Roundabout Theatre Company's ANYTHING GOES, winner of three 2011 Tony Awards® including Best Musical Revival and Choreography! One of the greatest musicals in theater history, Cole Porter's first-class musical comedy is sailing to Chicago, starring critically-acclaimed actress Rachel York as Reno Sweeney and directed and choreographed by Tony Award® winner Kathleen Marshall. The New York Times calls it "Musical-Comedy Joy" and USA Today hails it as "Glorious and Exhuberant!" When the S.S. American heads out to sea, etiquette and convention get tossed out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set off on the course to true love…proving that sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Peppering this timeless classic are some of musical theatre's most memorable standards, including "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "You're the Top," and of course, "Anything Goes." Don't miss what the AP exclaims as, "So Delightful, So Delicious, So De-Lovely!"

    "THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT"

by tapmajor on 4/27/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Proves a show can be a smash hit without obscenity, foul language, nudity, or overly sexual connotations. Cast of 99% top notch performers with real old-time tap and a musical score that will never die. Younger viewers may find certain parts a bit lame but this is what made Broadway Broadway. (Sitting as close as possible is a plus----easy to miss points of humor.)

Best offering from B'wayinChicago in a long time

    by maninS3 on 4/27/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

After last season's non-equity fiasco of "South Pacific" with 7 people in the pit playing synthasizers, I wasn't expecting much. I almost passed on this show based on my experience with S.Pacific. I had seen the NYC Lincoln Center production 20 years ago with Patti Lapone and Gregg Edleman. However, how often do you get to see and hear a Cole Porter musical on stage so I figured, anything is better than nothing. I was bowled over with the production! A full orchestra in the pit, 34 people in the cast, great stage sets and lighting, a fantastic cast getting the most out of and having fun in their roles. I hadn't seen Rachel York since her role of Avril/Mallory in "City of Angels" (a musical loosely based on "The Big Sleep" - go figure). She has the big voice and sexy attitude necessary for Reno Sweeney who is, after all, the hostess with the mostess of the whole production. Who knew that she could tap dance too. Josh Franklin seems to have been passed over for advertising purpose in his role as Billy but he is prefect in the part (sorry Gregg Edleman but you were cardboard compared to Franklin). The Conductor found the uptempo in Porter's songs which gave them an exciting pulse. Perhaps it is bad memory but there seemed to be more dance numbers, more music in this production and everyone in the cast was a triple threat (singing, dancing, acting) actor! Cole Porter's double entendre and sassy lyrics are sharper, more sophisticated and funnier than the hit-you-in-the-head libretto of "The Book of Mormon"; plus you can go home humming as many songs that you can fit in your head.

If I Had Worn Socks They Would Have Blown Off

by Anonymous on 4/27/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

This was one of the most amazing musicals I've ever seen in my life! I'm a huge theater buff but I was just floored. It was like watching an old Fred Astaire movie. Very true to the time period! The dancing, singing, acting all just great. A must see!

Wonderful show full of verve, sparkle and fun!

    by theatreafficionado50 on 4/27/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Run, don't walk straight down Randolph Avenue to the Cadillac Palace for the best feel-good show of the year... ANYTHING GOES is chock full of "Tony" level acting/singing/dancing talent in all the principal and supporting roles - loved the costumes and choreography/dancers too.... Rachel York's performance just knocks your socks off! And of course, bravos to Cole Porter for the wonderful music and lyrics!

So much better than i was expecting!!

by jonathanwinters on 4/27/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I wasn't really sure what to expect. My only previous connection with 'Anything Goes' is the lounge singer scene in Indiana Jones. The cast was phenomenal and worked really well with each other. I would absolutely recommend this show to anyone!!

Music was great. Storyline was a bit thin and predictable. I guess too 1950's for me.

    Anything Goes was fabulously delightful

by Joyfullinjackson on 4/26/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Anything Goes exceeded my expectations...which were high. The music was, of course, composed by witty and talented Cole Porter. The actors had strong and lovely singing voices. Dancing skills were stellar. Costumes and set designs were perfect period pieces. All in all, it was great fun.

    Everyone go to Anything Goes!

by ChitownChris on 4/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! I cannot recommend this show highly enough. As someone who's gone to many Broadway in Chicago shows, NYC Broadway shows, and numerous other smaller venue Chicago shows, ANYTHING GOES is definitely in the top five of the most enjoyable theatre experiences I've had. Cole Porter's wonderful songs are excellently staged, and the quality of singing and dancing - including several tap numbers - is superb. The script and plot are deliciously funny, and the choreography accents the humor in the songs as well. This is a show where the performers definitely play to and appreciate the audience - I enjoyed how many lines were sung as asides to the audience. The full orchestra were top-notch, and it was amusing to see the conductor wearing a ship's captain's hat during the Overture and Entre'acte. There is a touch of suggestive humor, but all in all, a very family-friendly show. ANYTHING GOES is well worth the ticket price, and a guaranteed good time.

    Simply Amazing

by Anonymous on 4/25/13Cadillac Palace - Chicago

A Cole Porter revival true to its roots, from the accents, and dialog all the way down to the period orchestra and arrangements, this show takes you back to the days when Fred and Ginger glided down the dance floor and Tommy Dorsey led his orchestra to Porter's music. Great one-liners, sight gags and never a dull or slow moment. The great acoustics of the Palace let you hear every word and note as if you were in the first row and every seat is excellent (I was back in row U under the balcony and had zero issues - great view, great sound, great leg room.) Singers were outstanding, though the male lead's words were occasionally hard to make out during some of the quieter vocals. Rachael Ward was amazing as Reno Sweeny, displaying an inspiring range of talent from the crystal clear vocals to the fabulous tap dancing number. Choreography was quite good (about 3.5 stars), given the limitations presented by the multi-tiered set design, the only weakness being some of the ballroom numbers, though this can be excused given that the performers were either talking and singing at the same time. (Being a ballroom dancing fanatic I may be overly critical here.) About the only way to improve it would be to get Fred Astaire back up there in the male lead. A must see if you can afford the ticket, (there are some great deals out there), if for no other reason to hear and see Rachael Ward perform these classic Cole Porter tunes in song and dance.
