Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

    Exceptional

by MrsMusicLover on 12/26/23American Airlines Center - Dallas

I have been to many concerts but had not had the pleasure of seeing Anita Baker in person. She did not disappoint. I have never seen an artist, background singers and band this exceptional together. You can tell she loves what she does and uses her gift well. Anita sang her hits and STILL sounds so heavenly!! She set the bar for live music performances. Her consistency over the years is unmatched . Highly recommend, you will not be disappointed.

    Amazing vocal performance

by Untouchable on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita Baker's concert was fantastic. Her vocal range is the same but smoother. Her songs sent be back to my younger years and love lost, heartache and the pain of love. Hoping to see her in 2024. Will not miss it.

Anita was great but the sound system was awful! 😖

by Dr. Ross on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita is very special what's rare is for a artist during the intro of a song that can softly scat in key with a smooth tonal quality that's rare in any generation! But the sound system was horrible all through the concert Miss Baker had to constantly tell the technician to adjust the sound levels all night! But the professional she is did it in a kind gesture staying professional as hard as it had to be. I'd love to see her again some other time in a different venue with a better sound system or different audio technicians taking care of the sound!

    Classy & Beautiful!

by LJ on 12/26/23American Airlines Center - Dallas

I have been a fan of Anita Baker since my early teens. Her voice & songs just made me feel better. This concert was the second time I have seen her perform live and I loved it. She still has it and yet she doesn't seem afraid or ashamed to age with grace. So happy I was in the building!!! It was a great show.

    Anita Baker - Dallas

by CD on 12/26/23American Airlines Center - Dallas

Her performance was well below my expected standard; my comments are: 1) The concert started almost one and a half hours late. 2) The introduction video was never properly played due to static and poor sound quality. 3) Ms Baker, based on her presentation, appeared to have never practiced pre-show because she relied on her band to select songs after asking the audience for song titles to which she promised to sing; nope, she would then only sing songs she apparently remembered. 4) To much time talking, catching her breath, and promising to play as long as the audience wanted to hear her. While I understand this to be an unrealistic promise, she should not repeatedly make this promise, proven by he fact that she ended the concert the minute the clock struck end time. This show, in my opinion, was more of a money grab and not a quality show. When she sang, I enjoyed the show. I would not pay to see her again.

by Paloma on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

My 1st time seeing Anita Baker LIVE at 50y/o!! I was excited!! And to hear her and she STILL sounds like her albums is amazing!!! She gave the engineer a hard time lol but she always ended it with “I Love You” lol. It led me to believe she has the type of connection with her crew… joking and loving. Still giving Songstress vibes at 65 is 🔥 🔥!! L.A. ❤️’s Anita Baker

    Anita Baker's voice is amazing.

by Hank G on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita was in great voice. Her voice was very rich and quite powerful. She was loose and fun on stage. She sang most of her hit songs. She came into the audience to thank her fans for decades of support. Her band, backup singers, and dancers on stage were superb as well. And she even stayed over time to make sure the audience heard most of her hits. It was a great show.

    The sound engineers were terrible

by Watch Dog on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

The sound was not clear at all. There was a lot of quelching of the speakers. The sound was very distorted during the entire performance.

Ms. Anita Baker is an entire vibe!

by 99999 on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita Baker sounds even better in person! I wish her sound team would have gotten it together before the show. Ms. Baker sang to her staff when things needed fixed. She sounds so amazing. Happy to have been able to see her in person.

    A bit of a mess!!!

by Cookie on 12/25/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita was late as usual. Throughout the show Anita complained about the sound system, constantly interrupting the flow of the show asking for lighting to be lowered here, turn up higher there, change the bass here, lower the bass there, it was terrible and embarrassing. Was there not a rehearsal? How about a sound check? We paid over $350.00 for each seat, the last thing we want to listen to are constant shout outs about fixing the lights or sounds, this should have been done prior to show time. Anita, you're my girl, but I can't pay to see you again.

    Very disappointed

by Diane012 on 12/25/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

We waited over 30 years to see Anita Baker. We came from Arizona to California at Crypto.com. I have never been to a concert that had the worst sound. First she comes out 45 minutes late, then when they played the video, it was so loud you couldn't understand want anyone was saying. When Anita came out, you couldn't understand what she was singing. Anita spent most of her time trying to get the sound fixed. It was was so disappointing. When we could hear her it was great, she can still sing. She did sing for around 2 1/2 hours. The feedback that was coming from the microphone was also horrible and it never got better. You couldn't hear the saxophone player. Just very disappointing.
