Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

Anita still has great pipes !!!

by dabmc on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

The Anita Baker concert was great. The only set back was the cold rain shower that took place. After getting over that, it was quite enjoyable. The sound was clean and sharp. It proved to be a great outing for the wife & I. I was impressed with Anita's still powerful vocal ability.

Anita transported me back to the 80's

by Rainbowfish on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Anita Baker was fantastic. Her voice was crystal clear and as sassy and sultry as I always remembered. She was stunning and her vocal style was reminiscent of a small blues club. The Chastain Ampitheatre was transformed into a small intimate jazz like club. Through the storms, terrential rain and loss of every technical capability aside from the sound she drew us in like friends sipping coffee at a kitchen table. I was mesmerized and transported back to a time in my basement listening to my component set. " I apologize swept me away."

    Anita Baker still has it!

by rockinover40 on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I really enjoyed the concert. It helped that it was at Chastain--the perfect venue for Anita Baker. I didn't like that it started over half an hour late and we were sitting in the rain, but besides that, it was a great concert. Anita Baker sounded great, band sounded great, and she sang all the favorites. Will definitely go again if she comes.

Anita Baker and Laura Izibur at AAHF

by dh9360 on 7/10/09Lot C at Camden Yards - Baltimore

The opening act Laura Izibur was fantastic! She's a lovely young energetic singer from Dublin, Ireland with a positive spririt and message. There was a very long break befroe Anita Baker performed, that's why I gave the show 4 and not 5 stars. Anita Baker still has it!

    Anita at Essence Music Festival

by Shenaynay on 7/7/09Superdome - New Orleans

Anita came out on stage with her band and ripped it up! She sang all the fav's and it was such a joy to see her really enjoying her own music. The band was great. She didn't have the glitz and wardrobe changes as artists think they need to have nowadays. She was just Anita! She opened for Maxwell but I could've left right after her and been totally satisfied.

    Anita Baker was awesome

by LovinLife on 7/6/09Lot C at Camden Yards - Baltimore

She still got it. Her energy was contagious. She sang the songs that I wanted to hear and also took some advice from the fans. I think her performance was exactly 1.5 hrs. The audience was in unison with Anita as she sang. There were people dancing and swaying to her love songs. There were hands in the air that waved to the beat. There were kissing and carrassing in the aisle. And this was not due to the aaaa achohol. She was one with the audience and whether or not she was acting she generally acted like she wanted to give the audience the "best that she got". I will definitely continue to see her. The audience was a mixer of all ages. One drawback the concert didn't start on time. Each time a promoter would come out and say one more minute. But the minutes turned into almost an hour. My tickets stated 6:00pm but Anita came on around 8:25pm. Some people in the audience were told that she was due to appear at 7:00 others said 7:30 and 8:00pm. You could tell that the audience was getting alittle agitated. But all-in-all the event was spectacular.

by AKAKAPPASANDS on 7/6/09Lot C at Camden Yards - Baltimore

ANITA BAKER IS THE ICON FOR CLASSY SOULRTY PERFECTION. SHE WILL CAUSE YOU TO REMINISE ON PAST LOVES, FALL IN LOVE AGAIN WITH PRESENT LOVE, AND REMAIN HOPEFUL FOR THE LOVE THAT'S ON IT'S WAY. THERE IS NO ONE IN THE WORLD ... CAN SING IT LIKE ANITA BAKER. THERE ARE TRULY NO WORDS TO EXPRESS HER GOD GIVEN TALENTS. HER VOICE IS NOT POWERFUL AND ANGELIC THAT I HAD TO STOP THINKING ABOUT MY MAN AND THANK GOD FOR ALL OF MY BLESSINGS (WHICH OF COURSE INCLUDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH AND HEAR HER SING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL).

African American Heritage Festival: Anita Baker

by Vivian2 on 7/6/09Lot C at Camden Yards - Baltimore

Overall the concert was just mediocre for the $80 dollars tickets purchased. Anita Baker was extremely late and didn't perform until 1 1/2 after the starting time. Her band was off key at moments and she would request that they start over.
