Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

    Anita Baker was wonderful!

by ELATeacher on 7/17/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Anita Baker sung like an angel. She gave a wonderful show. The atmosphere was nice. The rain stopped after she sung her first song. It was one of the best shows that I have ever been to. She chatted with audience and kept it real.

ANITA BAKER CONCERT CHASTAIN PARK ATL

by GAGIRL on 7/17/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Despite the inclement weather the show was fantastic. Hats off to employees with Chastain Park. In pooring down rain they still conducted themselves in a professional manner getting patrons to their seats and giving information and instructions as if the sun was shining beautifully. Of course Anita Baker gave us what we came for. We were soaking wet but had a great time!!

    Anita Baker was Awesome

by DeGi on 7/17/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

She did an awesome job. I really enjoyed the concert, despite the rain. I was a little disappointed that she didn't wait a few more minutes before she started because it was raining so hard.

by mrselj06 on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

This was a great concert! The perfect venue for a legendary artist like Anita! She is a true performer. I would love to see her here again! Had it not rained I would have given the evening/concert five stars. She performed two straight hours! It was awesome.

NOT AT HER BEST AND THE WEATHER DID NOT HELP EITHE

by GVLITTLE on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

HER SHOWS ARE BECOMING DATED. NEED FRESHENING UP. I LOVE ANITA AND HER MUSIC BUT SHE NEED SOME NEW MATERIAL. AND HER STAGE PRESENCE IS NOT QITE LIKE THE OLD DYNAMIC ANITA. THE WEATHER MAYBE THE CAUSE OF SOME OF THIS. IT IS HARD TO BE AT YOUR BEST WHEN IT IS POURING DOWN RAINING.

don't know for a fact, but she must know music theory. no one is that intuitive with vocal variations. top-drawer singing with genuine down-to-earth presentation. a beautiful show from a beautiful person. would love to see her again. absolutely no bad seats at Chastain Park.

Anita could have did more songs!!!!

by diane0726 on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I really enjoyed being at Chastain Park....It rained and when I say rained I mean the bottom fell out...Don't get me wrong i like Anita, but she was tired after the 3rd song....??? She was ready to end the concert at 9 30...For what me and I am sure other paid to see her, she could performed a little longer. We would not have minded a intermission. I will buy whatever she put out, but I will NEVER go see her in concert again. I guess she was saving herself for the essence awards. I really feel we got cheated.

Anita Baker is an outstanding performer as always

by gensim on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I have absolutely nothing but praise for the talents of Ms. Anita Baker, she has been and will remain one of my favorite performers. Her talent is immeasurable and she is extremely sexy and appealing. That being said the experience however was less than pleasurable because of the incessant rain. After spending nearly $200 on a pair of tickets I didn't expect an evening of Monsoons. After getting totally drenched and ruining my new outfit it was difficult to enjoy the show even after the rain subsided. However I will always love Anita Baker and she remains totally blameless.

    concert was classy!

by jeannine on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

Anita's performance was great!! However, it did rain that night, so i assume that is why her show was rather short. but then again it did not start on time. (at the time it was posted to start it was not raining, but i think there was some technical difficulties with sound equipment and lights.) But even with all of the elements of nature, my friends and I had a wonderful time!!! Chastain Park has the most beautiful ambience!! I only wish that her performance could have been longer. I did not hear some of my favorite songs. Also, before the show, Anita's songs were being played overhead in the park. I thought that was weird, since we would be listening to her "live" in just a few minutes. I think the crowd would have liked to hear Michael Jackson's music. (or anybody else's for that matter.)!

Not very happy with the evening

by mrandmrssmith on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

She started late and with the Chastain curfew, that means a shorter than necessary concert. The rain was not her fault, but if she had started closer to time we would have had more concert before the downpour. There was no opening act so we heard every Anita Baker song at least once so that by the time she came on it was almost anticlimactic. Overall, I would have to say that I have attended many MUCH BETTER concerts. (And by the way, Anita, 51 is not that old)

    Just ok

by Dmama04 on 7/16/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

It rained "cats" and "dog" making it a bit difficult to hear the singing over the rain. Also, since Chastain does not have covered seating, everyone crowded in one area until the rain stopped--it was hot and muggy. I thought Anita Baker was ok. She still has a good voice but I just can't believe a singer who has not developed any new hits should command such high ticket prices (i.e., $70 plus)--not exactly the same caliber as Michael Jackson. All in all, it was ok. I liked the girl in my younger days but now that I am older she nearly puts me to sleep and the crowded venue didn't bring much solace.
