Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

    Too Short

by AriesJewel on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I enjoyed the concert, however, the seats were very unconfortable, they were just regular metal folding chairs, having paid for the Pit area, one would expect better seating (won't pay for Pit seating in the future, not worth it). Also, the concert was to short, I realize it is in a residential area, but the Fair didn't close till 12:00am, therefore the concert should have been allowed to go on till at least 10:00 or it should have started at 7:00 or 7:30.

Anita Baker not to be missed

by ShaaShaa on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Anita came out on time, no warm up act. Sang without a break for 11/2 hours. She sang all the favorites and had the audience on their feet most of the evening. Great performance! Thanks Anita!

    Soundcheck Please!!!!!

by deafin1earnow on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I have loved Anita Baker's music for many years since the Rapture CD came out. I was looking foward to seeing her last Saturday at the Pacific Ampitheater in Costa Mesa CA, but the concert was a great dissappointment. When the curtain rose and I saw the band on stage nicely dressed, viewed the cool set, experienced a bit of the lighting then heard the music start I thought this is going to be a classy evening. Once Miss Baker Took the stage it was downhill from there. As she greeted the crowd over the microphone I could tell immediately that something was wrong. Her speaking voice hurt my ears. Once she started singing with her powerful voice I had to cover my ears. Who ever was handling her sound board is incompetent and if they think what they heard that night was professional or pleasant it is obvious that their ears are shot and need to get out of the business. I was angry and told my friend I wanted my money back. Miss Baker made some comments that she thought there was a problem with the reverb herself and even after that nothing changed or improved. The song line up was great and Miss Baker appeared to be engaging and dynamic on stage but the inept execution of the overall sound made it impossible to enjoy and endure this event. Three young girls behind me , obviously loyal fans, were singing along with Miss Baker and I enjoyed listening to them more than the concert. Whoever was working the sound board that night needs to pull their head out of their ass so they can hear what's going on on stage or better yet be FIRED!!!!!!! This evening was a major dissappointment and I will think twice about attending another concert at the Pacific Amipitheater. I feel I deserve free tickets to see and hear Anita Baker again when she is in Southern California performing since both of us were cheated out of a great concert experience. My reccomendation...Sound check Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Anita Baker was fantastic...PacAmp Disappointed

by PacAmpHater on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Anita Baker and her ensemble gave a great performance Saturday evening. She was energetic and had the audience on their feet. Her voice...all I can say is...she still has the pipes. Wow, can she belt out a tune. Most of her set was from the Rapture album. Now for the complaint. - The Pacific Ampitheater set a 9:30 curfew for her performance. ON A SATURDAY NIGHT, NO LESS!! She arrived on stage just after 8:15 and sang all the way until they kicked her off at 9:30. At 9:05 she said something about having 25 minutes left and every ten minutes or so counted down 'til 9:30. I thought she was toying with the audience. But around 9:25 she told us that she was required to stop the performance at 9:30. I was shocked when she finished a song, the curtain closed and the house lights came on. If the PacAmp continues this practice this will be my last concert there. Sorry for the downer review for such a wonderful performance by a very talented lady but I really wanted to express my dismay with the Pac Amp.

by sarchie on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

She is still amazing, but she just wasn't on stage long enough. That was so disappointing. I heard alot of people make reference to that. We all walked out together and had the same comment "Why was it so short"

    Anita Baker Enchanting

by LouisFV on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Anita Baker's concert was enchanting and filled with romantic songs. However, an encore perforamcen would have been preferred as well as her mentioning she had "20 minutes...15 minutes..5 minutes left." It took some of the magic away. Great voice and very engaging!!!

I've been an Anita Baker fan since she came out. But, to think that her live performance puts her albums to shame! She is amazing and very talented. I'm so blessed to have been able to watch her!

    Anita Baker

by hishi on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Anita Baker concert was fantastic but the only thing wrong with her concert was the 9:30 P.M. curfew at the Pacific Amphitheatre. Her concert did not start exactly at 8:00 P.M. as it should have been and it was over by 9:30 P.M. so her whole concert was actually around 1 hour long. Very disappointed with the curfew.

    Getting a Chance

by Kaliph on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

It was great to hear Anita sing again live. I was disappointed that it took two to three songs for them to figure out the sound and get it adjusted when a concert is very limited in time as it is at the fair due to regulations created by the surrounding neighborhood forcing her to end at 9:30 PM sharp!!! no encores. I am thankful that she was willing to sing at such a venue and offer us the opportunity of hearing her at such a great price. When times are tough and money is a scarce being able to go to a concert live is always an experience that stays with you for many years that you just cannot get from a CD.

Thank you for visiting the OC!

by Feed on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I left home at 6:45 for the 8 show. After making it to my seat at 8:05 (getting to the pkg lot was ridiculous because they closed the fair entrance and forced us to drive down Fairview to find pkg. I realized that the hordes were descending because Ms. Baker was in town. I hope you people took note of that! The huge amount of people were not rude or discourteous (thank you!) and the only thing that annoyed me was waiting 20 mins for HERSELF. But when she showed up, she showed OUT! I was not disappointed, she cranked the reverb, yeah, and when the feedback started the sound guys were on it and all in all, I felt I was visited by greatness. She is THAT good. She is beautiful, energetic and her vocal prowess is impressive and fantastic! I hope she visits again, because I think you people who book the talent need to give her a w.e. Two days of an almost packed house are definitely good for the economy.

Anita Baker at OC Fair grounds

by juliela on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Her voice was lovely BUT she only sang 7 or 8 songs for the 40 minute show. Everyone around us was upset. We paid for the tickets, took our afternoon to drive through traffic, find parking (which you all know how difficult that is), get to the show before 8:00 cause the ticket says it will start at 8:00 sharp and then she is late and the show started at 8:20 and by 8:40, Anita was counting down that she had 20 minutes left, then 15, then 10, then 5 and said it was not her fault but the curfew of the fair. If she would have started at 8:00, we could have gotten maybe 3 more songs in there (she took a couple minutes with each song to get it started with the musicians). Our time is valuable and this was time that was stolen from us to go through all we did to hear just several songs over a 40 minute show.

    Anita amazing but too short

by Choclit on 7/20/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Anita Baker performed at the OC Fair this past weekend. Her voice is still amazing. Her music is timeless. The seating was great. The only down side was that the concert was way too short. Anita Baker has had too many greates hits to cram into 1:30 minute show. The experience was priceless.
