Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

Anita, fix the soundsystem and start on time!!!!

by Sunblade on 8/1/09DTE Energy Music Theatre - Clarkston

Anita still has it! She sounded great but her mic was drowning out everything else. She made motions to the crew to tone it down, but it seemed like they were deaf. You could barely hear the background singers and every once in a while there was feedback from the mic. Also, she needs to start on time. The concert was scheduled for 8PM, she didn't start till 9PM. We paid $56.50 for seats and had to wait an hour so they could continue selling the $10 lawn seats. What's up with that?

by PreacherMan24 on 7/30/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - Atlanta

I had not heard Anita Baker since Shane Park in Detroit many years ago and she did not miss a beat. And now that she's 51 she is the best looking 51 year old. I truly loved hearing her. I even stood in the rain just to see her again. Thanks Anita!

OC fairgrounds not my favorite venue

by mzpinkshuz on 7/29/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

The parking was horrible. traffic backed up for 45 minutes just to park 6 blocks away from the event. We missed the first hour, of the 1.5 hour show. Reluctant to return to this venue. They should have had someone directing and controlling the traffic in flow to the fairgrounds.

    Anita Baker was so special!

by melliemiss on 7/27/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

What a great concert it brought back memories from the past. I got a bit choked up listening to some of the oldies but goodies. Anita was great at getting the crowd involved. Though the concert was a bit short she belted out our favorites and it was well worth the drive and traffic.

    Too short & loud

by Tuwie on 7/25/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I love Anita Baker's music, but the amplification at the Pacific Amphitheater was so loud that I had to put tissue in my ears to listen comfortably. Also, there was no intermission and Anita Baker asked at least 3 times how many minutes were left at the end of the show, like she couldn't wait to leave. It seemed to me like she may have had to use the restroom. Everyone was clapping for her at the end of the show and we wanted an encore song, but it didn't happen. I was disappointed about that. I am not sure that she tours very often. Her voice is beautiful and I do love her music, but her show could have had some improvement.

    My girl Anita......

by 1Nette on 7/24/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Simply a timeless and priceless artist. You never know what to expect from an artist who has been off the map for a while. I mildly questioned it, but she brought it home to us. She is one of my favorite seasoned artist from, back in the days. Shes' still beautiful, and a quality artist. As a matter of fact I just purchased my ticket to go see her in Nov @ the Nokia center. Hopefully they won't cut her time like they did @ the fair. We feeling a little "We need some more".

Anita Baker's performance was amazing. The only drawback was that she only played for 1 1/4 hours. Very short concert.

Anita was amazing but not the timing.

by Sachiko on 7/23/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Ms. Baker should have been able to have more time, the show was too short and she was under the gun to meet the time line. Even she continued to ask how much time she had and would comment on how little time she was given throughout the last hour of her show. An hour and 30 minutes for an artist like Ms. Baker is not enough time at all. This show was an appetizer/teaser; she needed to be able to perform with more time. That aside, she was AMAZING!!!! I am making plans to see her again but elsewhere so that she can take her time and "give her fans the best that she's got" without being rushed.

by Wendy909 on 7/22/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Out of the DOZENS of concerts I have been to, Anita Baker is definitely in the top 5. Her voice was so beautiful and powerful! She sang the songs her fans wanted to hear, and so glad she didn't forget the Rapture album. I definitely will be seeing her again!

    Painfully Disappointing!

by ricroc on 7/22/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

After choosing Rapture to be my wedding song 22 years ago, I was very excited for this concert and spent the money for front and center seats. First, OUCH, for a singer who specializes in mellow, lets-get-in-the-groove music, the sound was way too loud. I brought earplugs, hoping not to need them, and I was so disappointed when they weren't enough because her sound settings were terrible. Her voice was often fuzzy, distorted, and even worse, piercingly shrill. For me, the sound settings and overamplification ruined her voice. I wonder if she suffers from stage fright. She spent a lot of time with her back to the audience. Maybe that would help explain the late start, the frantic countdown to the end of the concert, and the extremely short set. I didn't mind it being short, my ears were hurting, and I was not enjoying it. But I think she seemed very anxious to wrap it up and get offstage. Not a great night.

    Anita Baker was AMAZING

by Krystina on 7/22/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Seeing Anita Baker for the very first time was absolutely astonishing. My husband always wanted to see her perform in person and now I understand why. Anita Baker's voice is crisp and clear as a whistle. No one sings like her. She is truly a female Luther Vandross in my eyes. I would love to see her perform again. We couldn't get enough.

It rained, I was cold and wet, But.... WE DID NOT MOVE. from our seats. As always she puts on a great show and it was well worth it to be there. I'd do it again. Her voice is still as strong as always and the overall performance was awesome.

    Anita Baker

by gregster on 7/22/09The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

This was a very short concert without any opening act. I wonder what the real story was on this. She was very nice, and warned the audience that it was a short concert.
