About

In ways both large and small, Andy Grammer is thinking a lot about how to speak his own truth. The concept of honesty—what it means and how to attain it—offers both inspiration and challenge to one of the most successful pop artists to emerge in recent years.

“I’m continually trying to broaden the spectrum of which colors I can paint with,” says Grammer. “And I think being as honest as possible lets you use contrast—pushing boundaries and being self-deprecating allows you to also go for the sweeter things.”

“As someone who likes to write happy, positive songs, I know they can come across too sweet,” he continues. “It’s way easier to write sad songs—you play minor chords and it’s instantly cooler. It takes a lot of effort to make something happy not sound cheesy, but I feel like that’s my life’s work. And right now, in the world, we need love in all forms.”

That spirit certainly informs Grammer’s "Give Love," featuring LunchMoney Lewis, from his upcoming third album, which is set for release in late 2017. "Give Love" follows the success of his platinum hit “Fresh Eyes,” which has racked up over 250 million total streams and became his sixth single certified gold or better.

“There’s a balance between organic and pop sounds,” he says, “I’ve created my own lane where I don't feel constrained to just serve up shiny, super-produced pop tracks." Even without the aid of a specific genre to categorize himself, Grammer’s music was an immediate sensation, as he became the first male pop star in a decade to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio with "Keep Your Head Up" and "Fine By Me," from his 2011 self-titled debut. His second album, Magazines or Novels, featured the triple-platinum smash "Honey, I'm Good," which was one of the best-selling songs of 2015, and the certified gold anthem "Good to be Alive (Hallelujah)."

Grammer claims, though, that he’s not stressed by any big expectations following these supersize hits. “There was way more pressure on the second album—that one almost killed me,” he says. "That felt like, if I didn't get it right on the second album, there might not be a third. But it went well, so there was more freedom this time, which really let me go to different places with the music.”

He points to a song called “Good Parts,” which he’s been performing onstage, as an example of the ways in which he is pushing his writing for the new project. “The idea is that when we share our flaws with each other, that’s what intimacy is—being genuinely vulnerable is how we get closer. So, I’m working on getting my own good parts out, being brave and sharing everything.”

This sense is especially acute for Grammer, who has now welcomed newborn daughter, Louisiana, into his life. “A couple of the tracks definitely speak to how incredible this experience is,” he says. “Everything feels new, you’re re-looking at all the things you’ve seen before. It’s an exciting way of writing a love song—words I thought were becoming boring became interesting again—and it obviously breeds good songs to prioritize things beyond your career.”

Grammer has already written over 100 songs for the record and says he’s “still trying to beat the best we have.” (He points out that "Honey, I'm Good" was the last song he wrote for Magazines or Novels.) He has learned that the struggle and the joy come from digging for those lyrics that express an emotion that is both real and resonant.

“Newton had an "aha moment" when an apple fell on his head which prompted him to suddenly understand exactly what gravity is. He took this thing that we were all dealing with everyday, that hadn't been fully understood or explained yet, and he proved it in writing. Everyone who heard about it must have been like "oh my god totally, I'm dealing with gravity aaall the time too! Literally everyday!  I think that every great song has an element of this in it. An "aha moment" that allows us to suddenly understand something more clearly or in a different way. A feeling of uncovering some universal truth that we all deal with. It can be sad, happy, trivial, or profound but if a song has this element in it, then I start getting really excited."

“The hardest part for me to get are words that I think are really worth saying," Grammer continues. "I spend 80 percent of my time on that. I know that I'm going to be singing these words on stage over and over again, so that motivates me to make sure that I'm saying things that I really believe in. But once the lyrics are in line, the rest is usually more fun, more loose- then I can focus on the songs production elements and figure out how I can take a song to the next level and follow where the words are telling me to go with it.”

As he continues stacking up hits in a young career, Andy Grammer has learned some things—but not everything—about what it takes to connect with an audience. “I can’t tell you why a song goes huge, but I do know when you’ve uncovered something that’s true,” he says. “We all have emotions and experiences that are true to us, but in the process of getting that into a song it usually crumbles and falls apart. It's kind of like an emotional game of telephone. Once in a while though, an emotion or feeling makes it all the way through the gauntlet and is still totally intact in the form of a song. When that happens, you know it has a chance to go big."

“And when you do create something great,” he adds, “you get to keep playing it, the song continues to give you what you need, it stands up to the test of time and still reaches people. And that’s the goal.”

  • Definitely go to see Andy Grammar, the others not

by feuermadchen on 3/1/15The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Andy Grammar is an amazing Artist, singer, and performer...and that is being said for his entire band. They have the same energy as a Bruno Mars concert, but a sound that is all their own. To top it off, Andy is charismatic and has you laughing between songs...he reminds me of Chris Issac the way that he naturally interacts with his fans. Alex and Sierra were a train wreck. Sierra can sing, but she needs some more training. I just don't know what Alex is doing there. His sound actually mutes hers. But, Sierra is such a nervous nelly on stage that it made this fan uncomfortable for her. Sierra, you don't have to talk between every song, especially if you have nothing to say. Paradise Fears was just tragic. The reverb on their bass was so distorted and strong, I thought I was at a rap concert, BUT I wasn't. I don't even know what they sound like because of that reverb. The Fillmore said some people want to bring their own sound guys instead of using the Fillmore's sound guys, who would know their system. Maybe this explains the distortion...I don't know if this is bad on the Fillmore for not helping them, or horse on them for not respecting the Fillmore...but it ruined their show completely.

  • ANDY GRAMMER AT THE FILLMORE WAS SUPERB

by BCPOHIO on 3/1/15The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I rarely, if ever, write reviews for the many live concerts that I have attended over the past decades. However, in the case of Andy Grammar, I felt a quick review was necessary. I heard a song of his on the radio a couple of months ago and went out to buy the CD right after. I liked his sound a lot and then a friend, whom with I have attended many live shows, informed me that he was in town. So, I purchased two tickets for her and I to see him here at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Not only did I find him to sound every bit as good live as he did on the CD, he is a great performer. He is engaged with the crowd and truly looks like he loves everything about his career. On top of the, the band had some really cool choreographed songs. And I mean the whole band: drummer, keyboardist, bass player, guitar player, and Andy. These added a really fun and enjoyable touch to an already excellent performance. She and I both felt it was one of the best live shows we have seen in years. And, as I said before, we see a lot of shows. I would highly recommend seeing Andy live to just about anyone out there and will surely see him again when he comes back to San Francisco. Also, Alex and Sierra and Paradise Fears were both talented groups who really prepped the crowd for a great night of music. This was about as good as it gets :D

Incredible show. Both Alex and Sierra AND Andy Grammer and his band have awesome energy and a great connection with the crowd. The Fillmore is an historic, intimate venue. Overall a great experience.

  • Andy Grammer Headlines Great American Music Hall

by Fiend4Music on 12/21/14Great American Music Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Andy Grammer for the first time when he opened up for Train in 2012. I loved his set and couldn’t resist seeing how he was as a headliner. This was the last night of the “Back Home” tour. Andy talked about how when you eat cheese and crackers you try to use the cheese more sparingly to make it last. Then once you get to your last cracker you use up all the cheese. Since this was the last night of the tour they were going to give us all the cheese. Put it all out there for us. Andy started the show with his hit “Fine By Me”. This immediately got the crowd into the show. They stuck with him for the rest of his set as he sang hits from his self-titled album including “Miss Me” and “Keep Your Head Up”. After singing “Biggest Man in Los Angeles” he ran the song into a cover of Aloe Black’s “The Man”. This tour is named after Andy’s latest single from his forthcoming album, “Magazines or Novels”. Her performed several new songs. • “Honey I’m Good” has a country feel to it and started with Andy and two of his band mates getting the crowd to clap along. • “Pushing” was one of his harder sounding songs. He taught the crowd the chorus so we could sing along. • “Forever” is a song about how long it takes women to get ready to go out. I loved that his band had danced and acted like they were waiting for a woman to get ready during this song. • “Holding Out” is a song about waiting to have sex with the right person. • Andy asked the crowd to two-step before he sang “Blame It On The Stars”. The entire crowd was moving side to side. He ran this song into a cover of One Republic’s “Counting Stars”. He covered Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” just before he sang his latest single “Back Home”. I would have thought this or “Keep Your Head Up” would have been his encore. Instead he ended the show with “The Pocket”. During this last song both Brendan James and Andrew Ripp came on stage in the green chicken and bunny suits that Andy had made them wear during their sets. They made drinks on stage and handed them out to the band. This was a great show. Andy Grammer is definitely headliner material.

  • Class Act - Awesome Performance

    by KCGuy1987 on 7/25/14Kanza Hall - Overland ParkRating: 5 out of 5

CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS about Andy Grammer and his band last night! These guys put on a heck of a show. Andy is a naturally upbeat and positive guy that has some great vocal talent. His band was very much included in the "show" and they all kept the audience participating. Andy ended up playing all of his hits, plus a few new songs - which were great, and played tons of covers of todays popular music. If that wasn't enough, Andy came out after the show and spoke and took pictures with everybody in the place. Do this guy a favor and buy some of his songs on iTunes or go buy his latest CD...great guy. Don't miss this opportunity - get a group of friends together and you'll have a good time

Amazing! The three opening acts were fabulous. I already have bought some of Brendan James music. Then Andy Grammer came on with such high energy. All his new songs were fantastic and we love hearing his first album. Would go again!,

Andy Grammer is a consumate performer. He clearly loves singing for his audience and is very generous onstage. Vocally, he delivers a flawless rendition yet infuses it with vibrant energy. His bandmates also gave great performances and added to the fun animation. Second time I've seen him live; I'll be looking for tickets every time he comes through Boston.

  • Amazing Show

My friend and I took our 13 year old daughters to see Andy Grammer and they said it was the best concert they have ever seen. Andy played all his popular songs and some new ones. The new songs are so good, bound to be hits. He also played some covers that got the place rocking!!! We had an amazing time. I hope Andy comes back to the OC soon.

  • Andy Grammer was incredible!

by mandajilly on 5/22/13House of Blues Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second time to see Andy Grammer in concert and he is truly an amazing performer! He's so happy and upbeat, spreading his positivity throughout the crowd. He talks to the crowd and plays lots of favorites, being sure to involve everyone in the singing. He did a few great covers (including Thrift Shop). I highly recommend seeing him!

  • Andy Grammer blew my mind

by whittersss on 5/20/13The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I absolutely loved this concert. I thought Andrew Ripp, the opening act, was brilliant. His voice was raw and pure and beautiful, and I bought all three of his albums immediately afterwards because he was just THAT good. Parachute was underwhelming; I've loved their music for a while, but they weren't very good live. The lead singer struggled to maintain his voice and his performance simultaneously. Andy Grammer, the last act of the night, completely redeemed them, though. Despite the fact that the speakers were too loud, he mixed a Jason-Mraz soulful feel with Thrift Shop pop and quirky, fun beats. His voice was SO good; it made the night unforgettable.

  • Fun night

Andrew Ripp, Parachute, and Andy Grammer were great together! They are all very talented musicians and the show had a lot of energy. It was a fun experience!!!

  • Andy was amazing!!

by Yamster on 5/20/13The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The opening acts were fantastic, way better than I expected: I am definitely buying their albums, something I never do. I saw Andy last year and am amazed at how much he has progressed and improved since. The whole event was fun, really a feel-good kind of thing, we all loved it, even my friend's 8 year old niece that we took along.

  • Andy Grammer and Parachute were AMAZING!!!

by Aralynn on 5/20/13The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Andy Grammer is not only an amazing artist on track, but is even better live! His band is incredibly talented, and their stage presence is out of this world. Parachute as well. My sister who hadnt heard them before thought they were fantastic, and is now a fan thanks to the concert. Andrew Ripp their opener was also fantastic as well.

  • Andy Grammer high energy / Parachute overshadows

by KDVal on 5/20/13The Fonda Theatre - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Grammer is a consummate entertainer, personable, engaging, energetic; that's kind of his gimmick, the goofy guy who made good and who can now afford to not act like a rock star. Short set, not unusual in small venue with strong opening act. Parachute may be the news here, though, also a shortish set (under an hour, I believe); these guys are going places, great band, good songs, they played a song to be released later this week, total hit quality. They did a great cover of "Gimme Some Lovin'", totally rocking, with the introductory comment that perhaps the audience wouldn't recognize it (!). Maybe lead Will was noticing all the late teens down in front, but everyone knows this song. Generously shared lead vocals on this song with the warm-up guy (Andrew Ripp). Don't know why, but I'd like to hear these guys cover something like "Peace of Mind" (Boston) in the middle of a show - help introduce a new generation to some classic rock.
