    Anat thrills!

by clarinetguy on 12/17/12Folly Theater - Kansas City

From the first tune, Artie Shaw's "Nightmare," to the last, an encore performance of Pixinginha's "Um x Zero," Anat Cohen's playing was crisp, allusive, inventive, and enthralling. She was well supported by her band. Pianist Jason Lindner was surprisingly inventive, using a percussive style and sometimes muting the strings with his hand or an implement of some kind. Bassist Joe Martin, a Kansas City native, played great notes and solid time and soloed too seldom but always with interesting lines. Drummer Daniel Freedman contributed several memorable solos (and I normally don't remember drum solos) and kicked the ensemble along splendidly. Cohen's clarinet playing was a revelation. I had heard her several years ago in a very informal setting, and her sound and technique have matured considerably. A gorgeous evening.

Some of the best jazz you'll ever experience.

by Frankndot on 12/16/12Folly Theater - Kansas City

Cohen and her quartet are consummate musicians. We saw the pianist, Jason Lindner, at Small's in New York about 12 years ago and he was good then - he's fantastic now! The bass and drums were equal to the task. All four played together as if there were some mystical connection - certainly a testament to Cohen's leadership (not to mention her virtuosity on the clarinet and soprano sax). If you get a chance to see this group, do it!

We were in awe with Anat's performance...so incredible brought tears to my eyes many times. Her entire quartet is phenomenal too. And then when Paquito de Rivera joined her, their solos were the best jazz clarinet solos we have heard. She is not just a "rising star" as they called her, she IS A STAR!!!!! FABULOUS!!!!!! GO!!!!!

Anat was like the Three Cohens in One!

by Rirrrr on 6/9/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

Unforgettable, even before Paquito magically appeared- the clarinet duet was one of those once in a lifetime moments in jazz. The venue was a perfect setting as well. Bravo!!
