About

Since its 2009 formation, the small-town quintet known as Alabama Shakes has delivered a swampy blues rock that’s taken the mainstream Southern rock genre by storm. The Athens, AL, outfit, comprised of frontwoman/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboardist Ben Tanner and drummer Steve Johnson, has released one album, 2012’s “Boys & Girls.” The ATO Records debut moved all the way to No. 8 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than half a million copies to date. A sophomore set which the band spent the fall of 2013 working on may surface sometime in 2014.

Howard’s powerful vocals have drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, while the driving soul of the band’s music has earned them famous fans like Jack White and Drive-By Truckers’ singer Patterson Hood. While the humble group has played support sets on tour with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford and Sons, ticket sales for their coast-to-coast headlining concerts has been high. Not to mention festival appearances at Bonnaroo Music Festival, Newport Folk Festival and Lollapaloozas in Brazil and Chile.

The sound from the Lawn was Perfect!

    by CALEB99 on 9/26/16Austin360 Amphitheater - Austin

The Lawn was perfect, fresh cut grass and no trash around us, plenty of space. Food and drinks available just a few feet away from you also. The Day was just wonderful I'm definitely going back again.

Alabama Shakes shook up the Austin 360 amphitheate

by Anonymous on 9/26/16Austin360 Amphitheater - Austin

It's amazing how an artist can make an arena into an intimate affair. Brittany Howard croons the everyday reality of the life and love of the hard working individuals who make up the majority. This incredible band shares intelligence and imagination. Excellent set lighting and sound.

    Girl got pipes

by Madilovesmusic on 9/26/16Austin360 Amphitheater - Austin

Amazing show. Britt and the band killed it. Every song, every note on point. Minus 1 star for zero crowd interaction...like how about a shoutout to the city hosting you, especially the music capital!! One of my favorite things about going to concerts is that you get to see the artists in a more raw personal level and I feel like I missed out on getting to know a beautiful soul. I appreciate that she introduced the band, but not even until the encore. I will definitely see Alabama Shakes again, such an outstanding band deserves a second chance.

    Amazing!

by Meils on 9/25/16Bold Sphere Music at Champions Square - New Orleans

This was the second time I'd seen Alabama Shakes in concert and this show was absolutely amazing. Though we had seats, we barely sat down. The crowd vibe was good. Some artist spend a lot of time talking but they played most of their songs. It was a great night.

    I mean, wow.

by RachaelAnn on 9/20/16Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

My expectations were high, but this was phenomenal. I knew Alabama Shakes would be good, but actually experiencing it is another feeling I can't quite put into words. Also, seeing Corinne Bailey Rae open for them was the cherry on top--I've loved her music for years.

Sound System was Terrible for Alabama Shakes

by Wmsbrgsue on 9/19/16Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

We had seats on the left of the venue. The sound system was terrible with distorted sounds. We could not understand the performers when they talked, and we could not understand the song lyrics. Such a shame that 2 fabulous bands had to perform with such bad sound. We recently saw Lyle Lovett at the amphitheater at William and Mary. Even though he is soft spoken, we could understand every word, both spoken and sung. The Portsmouth Pavillion is a lovely spot. Please replace the sound system with an improved system.

    Epic Night

by yacobiclan on 9/19/16Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

From start to finish, an awesome night, complete with full moon!! Corinne Bailey Rae was perfection, and set a beautiful tone for the rest of our musical night. One word for Brittany Howard & Alabama Shakes.......Unforgettable!! I believe she will go down in musical history with the great female vocalists, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Etta James, and Bonnie Raitt!! The Portsmouth Pavilion is one of the best venues in the area, my favorite place to see a show, the minute the music starts, the sound is so rich and full, you can't beat the view and that incredible breeze off the river. It all came together for a very memorable evening!

    Great experience

by hazldbeauty on 9/19/16Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

I have never been to this venue before nor had I ever seen them in concert. It was such a great experience. They had the crowd on fire the whole time they performed, even if you were not familiar with a certain song yet, you could not help but to get into it because of the intensity of the band. You can clearly see they enjoy making their music and put their all into each and every performance.

    Shakin the House Down

    by bandfan49 on 9/19/16Portsmouth Pavilion - Portsmouth

Oh boy what a show on Friday night. Brittany Howard is one of the best on stage performers that I have seen in years. She is also a very fine guitar player. The band was awesome and the crowd was up and dancing. Strongly recommend this group for music fans of all ages. There were 12 year olds as well as retirement age white hairs and everyone had fun. 5 stars for sure because she IS awesome.

Great Concert! Excellent Venue! Perfect Night! The sight lines at the Portsmouth Pavilion are very good. The crowd was really into the show without being obnoxious. Alabama Shakes, what can you say? Brittany Howard just pours herself into the songs. I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat the whole time, with a few tears also. One of the better shows I have seen in my lifetime, her band is really tight and Alabama Shakes are one of the few bands like Arcade Fire, Trampled by Turtles, etc... that sound better live. Great Weather! Great Show! I would go back in a heartbeat. If you are a fan of the blues, R&B, soul, rock & roll go see Alabama Shakes!
