About

Since its 2009 formation, the small-town quintet known as Alabama Shakes has delivered a swampy blues rock that’s taken the mainstream Southern rock genre by storm. The Athens, AL, outfit, comprised of frontwoman/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboardist Ben Tanner and drummer Steve Johnson, has released one album, 2012’s “Boys & Girls.” The ATO Records debut moved all the way to No. 8 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than half a million copies to date. A sophomore set which the band spent the fall of 2013 working on may surface sometime in 2014.

Howard’s powerful vocals have drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, while the driving soul of the band’s music has earned them famous fans like Jack White and Drive-By Truckers’ singer Patterson Hood. While the humble group has played support sets on tour with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford and Sons, ticket sales for their coast-to-coast headlining concerts has been high. Not to mention festival appearances at Bonnaroo Music Festival, Newport Folk Festival and Lollapaloozas in Brazil and Chile.

    Alabama Idol!!!

by Leadguitar on 10/1/12The Masquerade (outdoors) - Atlanta

This show was simply amazing. The band was tight (who knew 4 white dudes could have so much soul, LOL) and Brittany Howard is everything you want from a legitimate rock star: stage presence, command of the material and maybe the best vocals of anyone in the business right now. Simply put, they are a breath of fresh air in the music scene and their stage show is everything their album is and more. Just a great band to see live.

Alabama Shakes and Michael Kiwanuka supporting

by LARadiantR on 9/4/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

Brittany Howard is a legend, alive and under 25 (!)....and I was drop jaw astounded by how amazing her vocal gift is as I stood second row just stage right of center at the Fonda Theater a few weeks ago. I don't normally like standing in a tightly packed pit near any stage for any performer, no matter my love for their artistry. But in this case, I so do not regret being elbow to elbow with sweaty intoxicated others, to be able to have experienced this young but old soul in human talent form at this point in her career where she is just taking off like a bright silver comet in a dark blue night sky. This young woman is AMAZING!! I kept having to close my jaw because at times I realized how long it was hanging open at how her voice shook the entire house's core. I wasn't the only one shaking my head, mouth agape, in shock of being in the presence of such musical talent...everywhere i looked around me....people were enamored and flabberghasted at what they were witnessing. Her band is incredibly supportive and seemingly willing to play the background to what I'm sure they recognize to be an incredibly gifted lead singer for their own vibrational gifts. B. Howard made little small talk throughout her show, and didn't need to as just her songs were epic enough. She opened the show with taking the mike and diving right into a song... no "hi", no intro....just BAM! Musical genius. I will definitely be seeing this band again and again.:)

I've seen Alabama Shakes twice (Bonnaroo & Central Park Summer Stage) and they were great both times. The only issue I have with their live show is that it is quiet. Maybe it's just because I saw them at two outdoor venues, but I feel like their sound guys need to do a better job at mixing their instruments/vocals. Some of the guitar solos didn't quite cut through and even at "full volume" you could still talk to the person next to you at normal, conversational volume. All in all, though, a fantastic band with an incredible live show. I would definitely catch them if they're in your town.

    alabama shakes was fabulous!

by sober64 on 8/20/12The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Saw Alabama shakes at the fox theater in Pomona on august 15..amazing! The venue was super cool, 1930's or 40's theater with outside balconies really beautiful. But the band, Britany the lead singer is mature beyond her young age. Her voice is soulful and her presence onstage is incredibly inviting. I have been to many shows in my 48 years, lots of different genres of music and this was one of the best shows I have ever seen. They rocked with the opening bands horn section (antibalas) which was really cool too. Such a great show and they appeal to young and old. I went with my 24 year old daughter and she loved it as much as I did. Worth every penny and would love to see them again when they come to town. What a great rock band with a whole lotta southern sou!

The wait and anticipation was worth it!

by RollinTide on 8/18/12The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Alabama Shakes rocked the house! The enthusiasm of the band flooded the theater. They are one of the few bands that sound even better live! I drove an hour and a half on a Wednesday night with work at 5 a.m. the next morning......worth it and will do it again!

    Alabama Shakes/Antibalas, Fox Pomona

by Cheapbastard on 8/17/12The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Went to the show to see Alabama with Antibalas opening. Very bad idea to have Antibalas open the show. They were amazing! Smoking set!! After they finished I remarked to my girlfriend, "I would'nt want to follow that band if I was Alabama Shakes". Turned out to be just the case. As much as we love the Shakes and they were great this night, we just were not ready for down tempo soul after listening to hardcore afrobeat. We both actually felt bad about not feeling the Shakes like we wanted to. Please understand that in no way am I dissing the Shakes, we still love em'. This is on the booker/promoter.

Watching the Shakes climb to the top...

by tomvolta on 8/17/12The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Power. Pure power. Watching such a young band generate so much force was incredible. You forgot at certain moments that you were watching Brittany and not a female incarnation of John Fogerty when he was young and could sing. It was a pleasure to see a small band before they seriously explode and forget about affordable club shows and ditch us, like the Chili Peppers and Radiohead did for the inaudible and overpriced arenas and stadiums. I am glad we got to see them so early in their career...when the hunger and honest ferocity helped them to give us a truly impacting and powerful show.

by DJsurf on 8/17/12The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Alabama Shakes is best new band of 2012. Brittany and her bandmates should be seen live to truly feel the power and energy of their perfromance. It is rare to have such a phenom singer arrive on the scene and not be a diva - just a good heart with lots of soul!

    alabama shakes up the fonda

by hhillsbill on 8/16/12The Fonda Theatre - Hollywood

Brittany Howard is the best singer in rock music. Sold out house, everybody totally into it. This band is going to be huge! If Otis Redding and Janis Joplin had a baby she would sound like Brittany Howard.

They were amazing. She is amazing. I see over 50 shows a year and I have not seen a better blues singer. Janis Joplin and Aretha rolled up in one awesome package.

    AWESOME.

by SschiesS on 4/17/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Alabama Shakes were FANNNTASTIC! However, the crowd was pretty lame. No one was dancing, and as my boyfriend and I were enjoying ourselves and dancing around because their music has the best rhythm, we were getting dirty looks from the 50+ crowd.

by HotsauceMcPants on 4/17/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

WOW. I'll keep it simple--Alabama Shakes is the real deal. If you enjoy soulful, energetic music, you will not be disappointed. This was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Glad I arrived early enough to catch Lee Baines III and the Glory Fires--hadn't heard of 'em prior to the show, but those good ol' boys can rock. Awesome, awesome show.

    Alabama Shakes groove in Boston

by ZipCity on 4/17/12Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Love the Paradise Rock club in Boston. Old school! The Shakes were alsum! The crowd was really into it, and the band was on. I was pleasantly surprised by the opening act Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires. They played hard driving southern rock, and displayed a lot of energy. Some of the Shakes came out to play with Lee Bains for their last song, and I though that was a nice touch and kind of connected the bands and showed that they were all having a good time.
