About

Since its 2009 formation, the small-town quintet known as Alabama Shakes has delivered a swampy blues rock that’s taken the mainstream Southern rock genre by storm. The Athens, AL, outfit, comprised of frontwoman/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboardist Ben Tanner and drummer Steve Johnson, has released one album, 2012’s “Boys & Girls.” The ATO Records debut moved all the way to No. 8 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than half a million copies to date. A sophomore set which the band spent the fall of 2013 working on may surface sometime in 2014.

Howard’s powerful vocals have drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin, while the driving soul of the band’s music has earned them famous fans like Jack White and Drive-By Truckers’ singer Patterson Hood. While the humble group has played support sets on tour with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Mumford and Sons, ticket sales for their coast-to-coast headlining concerts has been high. Not to mention festival appearances at Bonnaroo Music Festival, Newport Folk Festival and Lollapaloozas in Brazil and Chile.

    Band great, venue terrible

by Eclecricity on 10/3/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

The Alabama Shakes are a great band and I was looking forward to seeing them very much. The band was excellent when they got on stage, but Electric Factory Philadelphia badly handled event. They showed no opening acts, but had 2, including one that was quite bad. Also long wait in between acts, including about an hour between 2nd act and Alabama Shakes. Thus, an 8:00 show on a weeknight did not have the headliner on stage until well after 10. I've attended many other shows at the Factory, and they seemed to sell far more tickets to this event so that there was no clear viewing of the band, even though we arrived early.

    Alabama Shakes-Shook the House!

by Anonymous on 10/3/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

When I first heard this band, I bought the Boys and Girls CD. Every song is as great as the next one. No side B so to speak. What really was positive and exciting was that the live show was actually better than the recording. So often live shows sound can be dissapointing.

    Alabama Shakes Rocked the House!!!

by EddieVanVedder on 10/3/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

If you merged Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, gave her a guitar and have her sing in CCR, you'd get Alabama Shakes. They rocked the roof off the Electric Factory in Philly. These guys are a true throwback to 70s rock, blues and soul. Brittany Howard has one of the most powerful and emotional voices in music today . One of the best new bands out there right now, these guys have true talent and are sure to become much more popular in a couple years. I highly recommend seeing them when they come to your town.

A great band to see live

by clp19709 on 10/3/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Pros: Alabama Shakes were fantastic. What a breath of fresh air. I love their sound. A parking agent stopped me on the way in and asked, "what kind of music do they play". I had to think before replying, "good music." They definitely have an original sound. The opening band, Fly Golden Eagle was enjoyable as well. Cons: The break between sets seemed very long to me. Beer prices, $10.25 for a 24oz lager. The people in the section upstairs by the main bar never shut up. Why not go to AppleBees if you want to drink and talk loudly with your friends?

Horrible. The band made us wait too long. The set was obscenely short. But I guess the venue was happy that so many people stood around drinking $9 beers for two hours.

Ala Shakes=shaking their way into my heart & soul

by frakinright on 10/3/12Masquerade - Atlanta

This show was one of the best that I have attended! The venue was awesome and the first opening act made me fall in love with him. I was jumping and dancing through all three acts. I love Britney, she is very inspiring. I wish she would look and engage more often to the crowd in the middle, she always seems to engage more to the very front and the back but I never noticed her looking to engage the middle.

    Great, but too brief

by Atlannie on 10/3/12Masquerade - Atlanta

The band played only a handful of songs before taking a break and when they came back, they played just one song before leaving the stage for the night at 10:40pm. Bands can play at the Masquerade until 11pm, and I know they have at least a few more songs on their album, so I was disappointed that their performance was so brief. The two bands that opened for them put on far longer shows. And the fact that their sets were longer, coupled with the fact that they were both really good, overshadowed Alabama Shakes...sad.

Alabama Shakes bring back the soul

by Anonymous on 10/3/12Masquerade - Atlanta

I've been to The Masquerade for numerous shows over the years but this was my first show at the music park. It was a lovely night for an outdoor concert and Alabama Shakes brought the heat. Their set was energy filled and tinged with an old soul feeling mixed with blues, punk, and rock. Brittany Howard knows how to control a crowd from the first note and hold on to their attention the entire show. The guys in the band are very talented musicians and their energy works well together. If you have a chance check this band out because they will be selling out arenas in no time!

    Absolute raw perfection.

by AntMorris on 10/2/12Masquerade - Atlanta

The Alabama Shakes play REAL music. Theres no frills or added effects. Just good ol' blues and rock and roll. And the service at The Masquerade was great. We had left our ticket at home (four hours away) and called Ticketmaster to get a lost ticket voucher that we picked up at will call at The Masquerade. There were some problems processing the ticket, but the staff at The Masquerade were great and made sure we received our ticket. Couldn't ask for better service, music, or price.

    a 50 minute show???

    by Chappy5 on 10/2/12Masquerade - Atlanta

The show lasted 50 minutes. That's ridiculously short! Some of the songs felt semi-inspired, while others felt extremely rushed. It felt like they were ready to get on the road. Disappointing.

I had not heard of Alabama Shakes until friends asked me to go to this show....OMG! They are awesome! The lead singer has one of the strongest voices i've heard in a long long time. I highly recommend you get them in rotation on your playlist.

    great music, but too short!

by jpricej on 10/2/12Masquerade - Atlanta

Great music and obviously sold out. Good outdoor venue, but standing room only. Only bad thing was they only played for a little over 1 hr.! Parking was an issue. Had to park in on a neighborhood street about 1/2 mile away.

    Short & Sweet

by tinydesignstudio on 10/2/12Masquerade - Atlanta

Sound was magnificent. The band sounded great. The wait for Alabama Shakes to go on after their opener(s) was a bit long - we started to get restless. The music sounded great; then the band took a break whereby they shone the lights on the audience. It seemed too early for an encore break, then they came back, played a few more songs and the set was over. I'd seen them open for Jack White in Asheville, and as an opener, a short set is fine. As a headliner, their performance should have been at least 20 minutes longer.

    Alabama Shakes shook the rafters!!

by patriotpride16t on 10/1/12The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Fantastic group! Bluesy, Rock, with some Jazz, Folk, Soul, Country. Their style is hard to pin down, because they run the gamut on all genres...and it is done so well! They gave me an eargasm!
