Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball at Coleman Coliseum

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide played their first organized season of men's basketball in the 1912-1913 season. Between 1912 and 2022, the Tide have won 1,769 games to only 1,088 losses. With a maximum capacity of 15,383, Coleman Coliseum has been Alabama's home since 1968, when it was originally Memorial Coliseum. As a single-level coliseum that creates a wall of noise for opponents, Coleman also hosts the Tide's women's gymnastics team.

Since their first season, Alabama has 10 Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight appearance in 24 NCAA Tournaments. In 2023, Alabama had arguably their most prolific season in school history under superstar head coach Nate Oats. On the way to a 31-6 record, the Tide were regular season and conference tournament champions in the SEC and also the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Alabama lost in the Sweet 16 to the eventual national runner-up San Diego State University.

Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball History

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team has had seven coaches with at least five years of tenure at the helm. The winningest coach in school history was Wimp Sanderson, who coached the Crimson Tide from 1980-1992. He left Alabama with a 267-119 record, including four SEC Tournament Championships, eight NCAA tournament appearances and five Sweet Sixteens. Sanderson also accumulated three SEC Coach of the Year Awards ('87,'89 and '90) and one National Coach of the Year award in 1987. He resigned from his post to become assistant commissioner of the conference and passed the reins on to David Hobbs, who had been lead assistant for seven years.

Mark Gottfried, who played under Sanderson for three years, was the only other Tide coach to accumulate 200-plus wins as head coach. Gottfried coached from 1998-2009 and is responsible for the Crimson Tide's only Elite Eight appearance in 2004. In 2019, Nate Oats was named head coach. Known for his pace and space style that features an arsenal of 3-point shots, Oats won the SEC regular-season championship in just his second season. In 2023, he led Alabama to a No.1 overall ranking on the way to the school's first 30-win season.

  • A fun Saturday of hoops

by Fred on 12/24/19Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Nice arena. The food court is one of the best I have seen. They have plenty of elbow room and a wide variety of food options. The concession prices are more reasonable than most places. Be sure to pick you seats wisely, this is a multi use facility and depending on the event you can end up with a wall by your seat as I did Saturday. The scoreboard for basketball is bare bones. Coleman offers a state of the art scoreboard and I missed being able to see real time stats Saturday.

  • Great Game

by MGeo99 on 12/24/19Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to every Rocket City Classic so far and it is definitely getting better every year. I love the fact that they are getting better and better opponents for Alabama to play. Everything about going to the game is a pleasant experience from parking to the seats in the arena. Didn’t know why the crowd wasn’t as big as years past. I would guess it had something to do with it being the last shopping Saturday before Christmas. Anyway, keep it up! It’s a great tradition to have here. Maybe Auburn should think about doing the same?

  • Good seats bought out before fans had a chance

    by a. s. on 12/21/18Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I understand financial support but let the fans have access to good seats. You guys let the corporations buy out all the great seats.

  • Alabama basketball

by Cassandra on 12/21/18Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Loved getting to see the Tide close to home. These athletes deserve our support, but that’s hard to do throughout the week. Thank you for bringing a game close to us!!

  • The games were very competitive.

by Norm on 12/21/18Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Parking for the event was easy. The event was what I expected if not more than what I was expecting. My daughter enjoyed both games.

  • Alabama v Mercer basketball game 12/19/17

by Anonymous on 12/26/17Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The PA announcer was quite annoying (same guy as last year- was annoying then too)- especially in the elongated pronunciation of players' names- for example "Iiin-graahm" and "Sexx-taahn" As it was considered a home game, the University of Alabama should have had some of their cheerleaders and possibly their pep band at the game. The time-out activities were a round-robin of presentations- sponsor A gave an award to sponsor B, B gave to C, C gave to D, D gave to A

Amazing game. Loved it! Cannot wait til next year.

  • Basketball on ice

by Plevne21 on 12/22/17Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 1 out of 5

Thankful no one got hurt do to all the moisture on floor. And seating was over priced for the view I had. Railing blocked 75% of view

  • bama b-ball

by doorgunner on 12/22/17Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Enjoyed the game immensely. Hope Bama continues to come back every year. it would be nicer if the pep band and the cheerleaders where part of the event. A decent halftime show would be liked. A guy trying to putt a golf ball thru a slot in a piece of card board is pretty hokey. And the little kids basketball is cute but not really very entertaining. Roll Tide!

  • Ice under floor has to go

by BobbyLee34 on 12/22/17Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 3 out of 5

If I were any coach I wouldn't want my team playing on that floor. Get rid of the ice under the court next time!!!

  • BAMA VS MERCER

by Bigun31 on 12/22/17Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 1 out of 5

The basketball games were good, but I wasn't there to see the sponsors be recognized nor was I there to watch kids from the Boys and Girls Club play basketball. The entertainment value was very poor. I will stay at home next time and watch it on TV.

  • Bama fans sold out the VBC!

  • Love Basketball, but concessions were terrible

by TarheelD on 12/24/16Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I bought these tickets to enjoy the game with my 6 year old son as a Christmas present. He was so excited and we did thoroughly enjoy the game. The thing that took away was the inefficiency of the concession stands. We were among the first in line at halftime with about 15 people in front of us. We missed all of halftime and the first seven minutes of the second half. Thats absolutely TERRIBLE!!

  • Awesome game

by FogThtSrnds on 12/24/16Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The VBC did a great job hosting the game especially when you consider that Huntsville hasn't hosted a major college basketball game in a long time. The energy in the building was awesome and I think it helped an Alabama team that has been struggling of late. It was cool to see a game in a small arena and I think Huntsville should definitely host a Bama basketball game every year.

  • Game was great!!!

by RTRMOM on 12/24/16Von Braun Center Arena - HuntsvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Always awesome to see the Tide play and the kids from the B&G Club were a bonus!!!

  • by Anonymous on 12/26/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 2 out of 5

This should have been an excellent event for the city but there are not enough places to eat around the area prior to the event. We waited an hour and a half at a restaurant and finally had to leave in order to make the game. Once inside the arena there were not adequate concessions to handle the crowd. Very disappointing.

  • Great game, poor facility

by MNBamaGuy on 12/25/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

Not trying to diminish what was an exciting game and a great effort by our men from Bama but the concessions situation at the BJCC really needs to be addressed. You should NOT have to miss a full quarter to buy a coke. No matter what time in the game you checked, the lines for concessions extended to the back wall. Not enough people working? A second change that might help the fan experience....raise the speakers ABOVE the center court video scoreboard. We could not see it from our end zone seating. Love the competition on the court but if you want to make this a "classic", you have to excel in all aspects of the experience. Thanks.
