Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball at Coleman Coliseum

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide played their first organized season of men's basketball in the 1912-1913 season. Between 1912 and 2022, the Tide have won 1,769 games to only 1,088 losses. With a maximum capacity of 15,383, Coleman Coliseum has been Alabama's home since 1968, when it was originally Memorial Coliseum. As a single-level coliseum that creates a wall of noise for opponents, Coleman also hosts the Tide's women's gymnastics team.

Since their first season, Alabama has 10 Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight appearance in 24 NCAA Tournaments. In 2023, Alabama had arguably their most prolific season in school history under superstar head coach Nate Oats. On the way to a 31-6 record, the Tide were regular season and conference tournament champions in the SEC and also the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Alabama lost in the Sweet 16 to the eventual national runner-up San Diego State University.

Alabama Crimson Tide Men's Basketball History

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team has had seven coaches with at least five years of tenure at the helm. The winningest coach in school history was Wimp Sanderson, who coached the Crimson Tide from 1980-1992. He left Alabama with a 267-119 record, including four SEC Tournament Championships, eight NCAA tournament appearances and five Sweet Sixteens. Sanderson also accumulated three SEC Coach of the Year Awards ('87,'89 and '90) and one National Coach of the Year award in 1987. He resigned from his post to become assistant commissioner of the conference and passed the reins on to David Hobbs, who had been lead assistant for seven years.

Mark Gottfried, who played under Sanderson for three years, was the only other Tide coach to accumulate 200-plus wins as head coach. Gottfried coached from 1998-2009 and is responsible for the Crimson Tide's only Elite Eight appearance in 2004. In 2019, Nate Oats was named head coach. Known for his pace and space style that features an arsenal of 3-point shots, Oats won the SEC regular-season championship in just his second season. In 2023, he led Alabama to a No.1 overall ranking on the way to the school's first 30-win season.

  • Great game, great crowd, game management was bad

by Mstuart4 on 12/24/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Concession stands were insufficient in number, only one mop to clean the floor delayed the game unnecessarily. Do not understand why management would allow long lines, long delays, that seriously detracted from an otherwise great game.

  • Vulcan Classicy a big hit!

I have not been to a sporting event at the BJCC in many years. Surprisingly, the Bama Oregon basketball game was a big hit. I was very pleased with the experience. The facility looks great despite its age and parking was relatively easy in front of UpTownn. $8 bucks. One small negative: the food vendors did not seem prepared for the large crowd, thus the lines were long as was the wait time. The only other negative… Bama lost.

  • Poorly organized event

by CokerGuy29 on 12/24/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 2 out of 5

Not all concession stands were open. Lines were wrapped around the concourse. We waited in line for 45 minutes before the game started for food and drink. Stands ran out of drinks and ingredients. We sat in the upper deck. Staff were telling some people in the upper deck that it was open seating and to sit wherever they wanted even though there were specific seats on the tickets. Came back from our 45 minute wait at the concession stand to find people in our seats who said they were told to sit wherever they wanted. They were gracious and moved. Afterward several confrontations happened around me with people trying to get to their seats and people were already sitting in their seats saying they were told it was open seating. Two grown men almost came to blows and got in each others faces screaming. One man refused to move because he said it was open seating even though the other man produced a ticket for that seat. There was essentially mass confusion with half of people trying to get to their assigned seats and the other half sitting in those people's assigned seats saying it was open seating. The game was good and the seats weren't bad. Poor organization all around tainted enjoyment of the event.

  • Great game bad organization

Game was great. Only 4 open concessions for 14k people was a joke.

  • Concessions were awful

by JBama on 12/24/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

Bama should not play games at BJCC if they cannot staff the concession stands. It took nearly half of the game to get something to drink.

  • Al/Oregon bball - good game, lousy concessions

by Bdogfan on 12/24/15Legacy Arena at The BJCC - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

The basketball game itself was very good but the experience was lessened greatly by the worst concessions I have ever seen. The wait in line was 45 minutes even during the middle of the game. If I return to Legacy Arena, I will be sneaking drinks in. It's their own fault!

It was a great event. Seats and view of the game were terrific.

  • Game was good, too many empty seats in lower level

    by TideFan1976 on 12/26/11BJCC Arena - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

I understand that the lower level tickets were held for regular season ticket holders. Well not even half showed up. It looks bad on Alabama basketball when what the people see on TV is an empty lower level.

  • Great venue!

by Binxxx on 12/23/11BJCC Arena - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

I had a wonderful time. Easy access to the facilities. Nice vendors with many choices. My only con was the long walk from the parking deck to the ticket office.

  • Bama shot lights out!

by RudyCK on 12/23/11BJCC Arena - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Alabama made this game look really easy. Seemed like they got all the shots they wanted and made them count.

  • "best seats available?"

by Lilota on 12/23/11BJCC Arena - BirminghamRating: 3 out of 5

Looked forward to this game but disappointed in seats. Requested best seats available and was in the "nose bleed section". The bjcc was only about 40% full, so we moved down without any problem. For it to be I national TV, the seats at floor level and lower level should at least appear full. It's embarrassing to see Alabama with so many empty seats! Good game though, once we could see the action.
