About

Al Stewart on Tour

There is something special about an artist who can tell a captivating story through their music. Scottish singer/songwriter Al Stewart is one of them. Drawing crowds on tour since the 1960s, when his debut album, Year of the Cat hit the radio, Stewart takes his audience on a journey with him that they will never forget. Attending a show is a memorable experience, and can be somewhat of a history lesson. The folk singer started his career writing love songs, but after a run of bad luck in that department, Stewart, an avid history buff, decided to give his storytelling skills a whirl. Stewart's concerts are a glimpse into the past, telling his favorite tales from his years of scouring history books. His 1974 album, Past, Present and Future, outsold all of his previous albums combined. Stewart has maintained one of the most devoted and long-lasting audiences of the folk/rock genre. His 2022 tour with his band, The Empty Pockets, is set to span three countries, including the United States, UK and Israel. The 2022 tour will feature songs from all of Stewart's albums, including Year of the Cat, Time Passages, On the Border, Nostradamus, and Roads To Moscow. Catch Al Stewart and his band, The Empty Pockets on tour in 2022.

Al Stewart Live in Concert

Al Stewart is a Scottish singer/songwriter who rose to stardom in the late 1960s as part of the British Folk Revival. When Stewart was a child, his mother moved him to an English town named Wimborne Minster, following the death of his father. His father, who served in the Royal Airforce, died in a plane crash during a training exercise before Stewart was born. He began his career by singing in local coffee shops around London. As his music career took off, Stewart released two back-to-back platinum-selling albums,The Year of the Cat and Time Passages. Stewart moved to the United States to reside in the Los Angeles area following the release of his album Year of the Cat in October 1976. Stewart prides himself on writing music that is a bit eccentric. His concerts draw fans who have been loyal to Stewart for decades. His 2022 tour follows several cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is long awaited and anticipated by fans.

Al Stewart always puts on a great show! The only negative thing had nothing to do with the show itself but the ignorant people behind us who talked as though they were in their living room - for the entire show!! (Except for the 5 minutes after I shushed them!)

    Al Stewart is a troubadour

by Salsd on 12/4/12Club Madrid at Sunset Station Hotel & Casino - Henderson

I was a teenager in the 70s when Al Stewart broke on FM radiop with Year of the Cat, and I had no idea of his intense songwriting, lyrics with historical meaning and intellectual musical style! What fun to see him and the phenomenal Dave Machnamoff (I know I'm spelling that wrong, sorry Dave) playing unbelieveable accoustic set. Was visiting Vegas on a quiet week, not many headliners in town and was really glad we found this show at a very small theater in this casino 15 minutes from the strip. Watching Al and Dave on stage, you can see them dressed in minstrel's garb from 16th century England, strolling around playing their instruments and telling stories through Al's very deep and often historically-based lyrics.

    Another great show

by Delnorteduck on 12/2/12Club Madrid at Sunset Station Hotel & Casino - Henderson

Once again, Al Stewart provided a fine evening of entertainment. So many acts come out, do their songs, and leave. Not Al. He talks to the audience, tells stories about his songs, and generally puts on a fine show along with his talented guitarist Dave. This is the fourth time I have seen Al, and each time was special.

    Al Stewart timeless !

by Chieftain76 on 12/2/12Club Madrid at Sunset Station Hotel & Casino - Henderson

Al played at a small venue, but his music was as big and moving as ever. The way he blends the lyrics surrounding historical events is truly unique and amazing. Wonderful singer songwriter.

Al Stewart firing on all cylinders

    by Dana22 on 11/6/12Birchmere - Alexandria

Al was well rested, enthusiastic and played and sang as well as he ever has, and I've seen him 7 times. Dave Nachmanoff was great as always, I wish he had done more songs. Opener Rachel Sage did a fine job and was entertaining, though it was very hard to understand her lyrics. She needs to slow down and enunciate a bit IMO. Al did a lot of less-usual songs - he even skipped Time Passages and Song On The Radio, which were among his biggest hits. I didn't mind, because I got to hear Roads to Moscow, a very long song that he only does occasionally. I can't recommend the venue, though. Since they do not have reserved seating, there were several examples of one person "saving" (running over and claiming) whole tables of 8-12 seats, and turning away singles and couples, while their friends farther back in the priority line waited or dawdled drinking. Security had to be called in at least one instance as one of these jerks tried to kick a couple out of their seats.

Best Al Stewart Show I have seen

by cwcdv on 11/6/12Birchmere - Alexandria

As this was the last show of the current tour, Al Stewart played "Roads to Moscow" as an encore. By his own admission, this is one of the most requested shows at his concerts, but he "rarely plays it anymore". As it is one of his best songs, I feel fortunate to have seen it live. Last time I saw him perform this song was in 1975 (76) during his US tour. In my opinion, Dave Nachmanoff is one of the best acoustic guitar players out there right now. His mastery of the music written by Stewart, and recorded by various instruments in the studio, is amazing.

Al Stewart - A Great Show!

    by Stick23 on 11/6/12Birchmere - Alexandria

Al Stewart played a number of his hits and some lesser known material Saturday at the Birchmere - Al has still got it. His guitar work is impeccable, his voice strong and on-key, and his sense of humor intact! He played with Dave Nachmanoff, a superb guitarist in his own right, who did the heavy-lifting lead guitar, while Al handled lead vocals. Al's 'historical folk music' is timeless! Rachael Sage, who opened the show was delightful, and joined Al and Dave in closing the show.

    Al Stewart Live

by JimmyTim on 11/5/12Birchmere - Alexandria

First, the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va is an awesome venue. I mean, the place has amazing acoustics and offers grub and booze during the show. It that cool or what!? Oh, and to see Al Stewart on this stage! What an evening. I thought he was there just for me. He rocked, and joked, and carried on, and played amazing tunes. He forgot the lyrics once (or pretended to) and stopped in the middle of the song like Tiger Woods in the middle of a backswing. I mean, well, you'd expect professionals to make the difficult look easy, wouldn't ya?

    My Sister Is A Convert!

by SohoSoToSay on 11/5/12The Birchmere - Alexandria

I was pretty sure that Al Stewart would show up at the Birchmere with a guitar hero who would help do justice to his music--and he certainly did. Al was more personable than I had ever imagined, and David Nachmanoff's guitar solos were literally breath-taking. My sister tagged along out of boredom, and she was grinning every time I looked at her. Thank you, Al and David, for a wonderful evening and for proving to my sister that I CAN introduce her to something new every once in a while.

    Al Sewart at the Birchmere

by DetroitDan on 11/5/12Birchmere - Alexandria

Great show, Al even conceded to do Roads to Moskow, though it was apparent he dosen't play it often as he forgot a few words. Overall it was great, just wish there was more room in the seating area.

"Sir" Stewart shines brightly. Voice as rich and strong and songs as always beautiful. Warm stage presence and his accompanist Dave Nachmanoff is always superb. Here's hoping Mr. Stewart continues his live performances for years to come! I'll be there!

    Al Stewart won me over!

by rrdrr on 11/5/12Birchmere - Alexandria

I only tagged along on this concert to keep my sister company (she's a long-time Stewart fan), but I was very impressed with the entire show! And the Birchmere was the perfect venue for it. Al Stewart is a very personable performer, and a real pro. The blending of the two guitars was perfect, and the choice of songs was, in my opinion, perfect for both the life-long fans and those of us who are new to the fold. Dave Machmanoff was just great, both in his solo performance and with Al. He brought a lot to the concert with his Django-style guitar playing, and Rachael Sage was an enjoyable warm-up with her unique styling and stage presence. We all know some of Al's songs but, if, like me, you never considered yourself a fan, I recommend you go see him in person. You'll be glad you did!

    Wonderful show!

by opjose on 11/5/12Birchmere - Alexandria

As always Al puts on a great show. Dave did a great job with the solos and accompanyments. The venue was condusive to an enjoyable evening. Al even provided autographs after the show. I would like to see Al playing with Peter White and a full band.

Al Stewart puts on an excellent show. The opening act was reasonably forgettable, but I saw the show I was hoping to see when Stewart took the stage.

    Slightly disappointing

by skvidderz on 9/12/12Aladdin Theater - Portland

I'm a long-time admirer of Al Stewart's uniquely esoteric songs, and I was looking forward to seeing him in the intimate confines of Portland's Aladdin Theater. The show opened with a couple of fun songs from Dave Nachmanoff, accompanied by bassist Mike Lindauer, who set the relaxed, jovial tone that carried thoughout the rest of the show. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but it felt to me like Al sort of phoned in his performance. He was personable but slightly disengaged, without the energy and charisma of his sidemen. His vocal range has diminished (unsurprising in a guy who's past retirement age), he forgot lines, and he just didn't seem all that enthused to be on stage - it looked like he was doing a job. Nachmanoff was screamingly good, however - his guitar provides a remarkably sympathetic backbone to Stewart's act, and his energy livened up what would otherwise have been a rather perfunctory performance.

    Al Stewart

by Kadokajoe on 11/11/11Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Al Stewart was great, relaxed, seemed to be enjoying himself and he put on a great show. It is nice to see someone who has stayed a class act all these years!

    truly truly absolutely amazing

by gpmmm on 11/8/11Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Have been a fan of Al Stewart for decades but never been able to attend a concert so this was SUCH A TREAT! Both musicians - Al Stewart and Dave Nachmanoff - are truly accomplished artists. 2 guys with guitars who filled the room with great music. Time went by all too fast. - I also really appreciated that the musicians took the time after the concert to sign autographs and chat for a bit. I hope to see them again soon in concert! - I missed much of the opening band because I got lost getting there in the dark and rain but what little I heard sounded good too.

    Excellent show

by Ryeal on 11/8/11Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Al Stewart put on a great show here, performing a nice range of his music, interacting well with the audience, and proudly showcasing his talents and those of his lead guitarist, Dave Nachmanoff (amazing). Al clearly can still sing and tell stories with the best of them. We left wishing only that the concert had been longer. The venue was good for sound and intimacy, and the staff was friendly and efficient, but they could have avoided the unpleasant surprise of a $5 parking fee.

by butchhorsechick on 4/21/11Bright House Networks Amphitheatre - Bakersfield

they played two full hours and really enjoyed themselves. Nice to see musicians who love what they do. sorry I forgot his accompany fellow but he rocked on the acoustical guitar. Al can still sing after all these years. Great time, we loved it!
