Al Di Meola's performance at this concert exceeded my expectations. He was approachable at the end of the concert and seemed to be humble when he was signing CDs and posters for his fans. I know he is phenomenal because I have witness several of his concerts over the past 21 years. The band members complement each other very well. When is he coming back to Atlanta?????

One of the best shows I've seen. Wish I had seen him back in the 80s when he did more electric guitar, but still a phenomenal show.
Amazing
by Kingpin99 on 3/21/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5I particularly liked his acustic set. The other musicians that made up his band were also particularly good.
My first ADM concert! (A great performance)
by deardragan on 3/21/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5My first time seeing Al live and he delivered a great performance! He started out with songs from his new CD and ended with an encore of two older songs including the one we were waiting to hear all night - "Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway" What more could you ask for? I will see Al again if he is in the area or near by since he sounded very good in this venue that is not bad, but other concerts did not sound as good at this location.
Al Di Meola is a wizard of good!
by espishere on 3/21/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5Big fan... Saw him and his extraordinary band the last two times they performed at the Variety Playhouse (and numerous times in NYC). He says he loves to perform here and the audience is terrific and respectful. He even stayed in the lobby after the show to greet fans and sign his new CD. It simply never ceases to amaze me about how melodic, technical and just simply magical he is with his guitars and his musical arrangements. The great thing about AL Di Meola is it really doesn't matter what he plays - his live performances are truly wonderful... Can't say enough good things about this wizard of good!

not fond of accordions
by alisa53 on 3/21/11Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5We actually did not attend this show. We purchased tickets, but learned that once again Al DiMeola would be accompanied by the grating, omnipresent accordion player who (from our standpoint) entirely ruined his last show at the Variety Theater. The accordion is a strange instrument with little utilitarian value in most musical genres. It seems to lend a Parisian cafe feel to everything it touches. Frankly, your mind wanders, and you begin to imagine the guy with a little suited-up monkey on his shoulder and a tin can on the floor. Perhaps he's a good musician. Just not my taste. Anyway, we decided it was far better to take a loss on these tickets, and miss seeing Al D - one of my husband's all-time favorite guitarists - to avoid the unpleasantness.
Yearning for some "Kiss My Axe" trax
by Decadeold on 2/24/11Coach House - Capistrano - San Juan CapistranoRating: 4 out of 5Yes Al is on the mark as always no argument... Tho I would have liked to hear a few tracks off his "Kiss My Axe" Canvas... The new sounds are very well done, I have not heard Al in over a decade and it seems this latest tour had a very Parisian theme with the "Accordion" leading the charge throughout most of the show. I along with the friends I brought with me were hoping for a bit more of the Latin flavor, as I had bragged to them of his unique style throughout this arena. All in all the show was outstanding and Al continues to walk his own unique path.
Great but not good
by neuromon on 6/28/10The Center for Arts in Natick - NatickRating: 3 out of 5Al Di Meola is unquestionably a guitar virtuoso. His lightning-fast riffs are technically brilliant and tremendously skillful. And they were on display in full form last night as he played a set of flamenco/latin/jazz fusion with his World Sinfonia group. However, in showcasing pure technical skill, especially in such a complex and arcane musical genre, sometimes melody and accessibility are sacrificed. Songs lasting 6 to 8 minutes can begin to meander and lose focus. With Di Meola and most of the band reading from sheet music most of the night, it had the feel of a recital excercise, perfectly executed, but not exposing the soul of his musical muse. His interplay with accordionist Fausto Beccalossi was at times delicate and delicious, as during "Michelangelo's 7th Son". However, the accordion has a limited sonic range which risks monotony, and I found myself thinking some songs would be better served with a respite from its singluar tone. A welcome addition to the set list was his arrangement of "Strawberry Fields Forever", rendered on his PRS electric. The recognizable structure and melody anchored the song and welcomed the audience in. More succinct pieces like this would have been a better showcase for Di Meola's mastery.
Not my style
by Shredarico on 2/26/10Coach House - Capistrano - San Juan CapistranoRating: 2 out of 5I last saw Al about oh.....20 years ago. Saw the friday night in SF trio and the Electric rendezvous tour . Last night his first 6-7 tunes were all fairly new and featured his accordian player. I feel that all the songs sounded very alike and did not care for the accordian player. Although I can appreciate his skill I feel that al has replaced keyboards with the accordian and I just dont care for it.As far as the "oldies" they were ok but I prefer when musicians play tunes like I hear on the album instead of mixing in what ever comes to mind at the time (improvising) Al is still great but I guess I just dont care for his newer stuff.
